Would love to see those Lautners but I'll be surprised if we get English subs.

Les misérables (Raymond Bernard, 1934)

This is not a new review of the Pathé Blu-ray release but a new DVD Beaver comparison of it with Criterion's Eclipse DVD release and the recent Masters of Cinema region B Blu-ray.

Of note, the MOC release utilizes the same Pathé 4K restoration and has more extensive supplements while the later is region-free and has optional English subtitles.
This may bode well for those looking into other English-friendly Pathé offerings.

I've picked up a few Pathe titles recently that have English subs - Le Bonheur, Une si jolie petite plage, and Les Orgueilleux. Pretty sure some of their other recent classic range releases have English subs too - Borsalino, Le Desert des tartares, La Reine Margot, La Fievre monte a El Pao etc.

Yeah, I have La Fievre monte a El Pao, which looks gorgeous. You're right, maybe there is hope for subtitles. I think I was mentally filing most of those under Gaumont, incorrectly.

I've seen most of these discs and they have usually optional english subs except a few titles (Tess for instance).
However I'd stay away from Le désert des tartares PQ wise.

Deux hommes dans la ville, Garçon!, and Le toubib all have English subtitles, according to Amazon (and Svet's review confirms on the first one). Blu-ray.com lists subs for Les Désordre et la nuit and Paradis perdu, but Amazon does not. Hmmm. Assuming we're out of luck there.

Hello Perkins,

These are all English-friendly releases and we will put up reviews for the remaining three titles, but I am a little sick at the moment and things are moving a bit slower than usual.

So - one would think that Belle and Fin du jour would have English subtitles. And I notice that the Amazon specs have that incompleteness of initial postings, e.g., no running times. So one hopes. Couldn't find these on the Pathe site, but perhaps they are somewhere, with more information. It's difficult to find what you are looking for when Pathe perversely insists on presenting its site in, of all things, French. Perhaps someone on the forum has some definite information concerning subtitles? Oui?

To answer my own question: yes, subtitles for Belle and Fin du jour (but not for Voici les temps des assassins) per a bi-lingual Blu-ray.com poster's inquiry to the Pathe facebook page.

Merci! I had asked the same in another thread and gotten no response.

From the things I've looked at, it seems like a lot of Pathe's recent French releases of French movies not licensed for video in other territories have English subtitles. Is it possible that the lack of English subtitles on Voici might be a hint that the movie could be in line for a US and / or UK release?

As a side note: Not that it is likely to be an issue for most people here, but the Pathe blus with English subs that I've seen are also region coded ABC. So you don't even have to have a multi-region player to play them. They seem to be making it as easy as possible for English speakers to import and watch those disks. (Although the extras don't have any subs, not even the French SDH.)

From Blu-ray.com:
French label Pathe has revealed that it is working on a new restoration of director Raymond Rouleau's classic film The Crucible a.k.a. Les sorcières de Salem (1957), starring Simone Signoret, Yves Montand, Mylène Demongeot, Jean Debucourt, Jean Gaven, and Michel Piccoli. A Blu-ray release of The Crucible is expected to be announced in early 2017.

So the new Blu-ray of Voici le temps des assassins is without English subs or am I mistaken?

Anybody know for sure whether the Goupi Mains Rouges Blu-ray that came out in December has English subs? They're not mentioned in the specs on Amazon or FNAC; but the DVDClassik review lists them, as does Pathe's website, although the latter also claims the film is in "couleur," so I'm not sure it's trustworthy.

Marie-Octobre has English subtitles, as personally verified by me.

According to http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Tchao-Pan ... ay/164206/

Tchao Pantin also has English subtitles.

Pathé is my favourite label at the moment, I've watched all the Duvivier releases that came with English subs, pristine prints, superb movies. Literally made my Christmas watching them.

Does anyone know if the Duvivier releases (specifically La Belle Equipe) were limited edition? It was only released in summer, but I can't seem to find it for sale anywhere. As a Jean Gabin fan, I'd be bummed if I missed out :(

Stock for some of these has been poorly managed it seems. They keep disappearing then coming back. I believe they are planning BD (non Dual Format) releases in standard packaging once they truly run out.

They're just getting out of stock of the former DF digipack and are replacing it with a BD only in Amaray. La belle équipe seems to have been one of the fastest seller amongst Pathé's latest wave, which explains why there seems to be a timing misalignment on this title. The BD-only release is planned for March 2017.
