Re: Amélie (Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2001)
I saw Amelie before I had watched any Kieslowski, and now, having seen a fair chunk of the latter's filmography, it's interesting to see how much Jeunet owes to Krysztof. The old man-young woman mentor-student shtick is a riff on Valentine and the Judge's relationship in Red, and the visual sense and quasi-melancholic fantasy elements are arguably influenced Double Life of Veronique.
Veronique is the superior film - in fact, it's grown to be one of my very favourites; Amelie is a pleasant confection (almost tooth-achingly sweet at times) and a nice watch on its own terms, but it's no masterpiece of French/European cinema.

Oh man, my comments in this thread are hilariously cringe-inducing! Heaven only knows what compelled me six and a half years ago to go on one of the most hipstery rants to ever darken our forum, but there it is for all to see
ANYWAYS, Spoke Art is holding a Jeunet & Caro tribute art show with original works of art and some prints available online-- as you might expect, it's really about 90% an Amelie art show, thus I'm posting about it here

North American rights acquired by Sony Pictures Classics, theatrical re-release scheduled for 14th February 2024.
Good chance of a 4K UHD Blu-ray release as well I would think.

Oh my god, yes, this would an absolute dream come true because the colors would absolutely pop if it’s properly encoded, not only that but it’s an absolute favorite of mine so it would be an immediate Day One pickup if it does happen and all goes right.

Isn't this film one of the earliest European films to use a 2k digital intermediate in post-production?
