Film Noir : A Guide

FILM NOIR: A GUIDE
I wasn't real happy with any existing Film Noir guide available online, so I synthesized and compiled and created what I could into this guide to just under a thousand films released between the years 1940 and 1969. Where available I have listed the best / most convenient home media release for each title. For those itching to discuss Film Noir, keep in mind that the Genre List Project is gearing up to do the first ever redux list this summer and fall (July-November), the thread for which can be found here

NOTES ON THE LIST
Films labeled as "PD" have fallen into the public domain and are therefore available cheaply and in poor quality from a number of sources. When a reputable company has released a superior quality disc of a PD title, I have indicated so in the listing.

Many of the films labeled "No commercial release" are still available to purchase via bootleggers who sell their DVD-Rs on Amazon, iOffer, eBay, &c. Since these are not authorized releases, I do not count them as legitimate. Virtually every "No commercial release" title listed here is available via backchannels for nothing-- please think twice before financially supporting bandits (though this is the genre to get conned and/or support crooks!)

The purpose of this thread is not to debate the assorted categories or argue that a film should not be included. Please spare everyone bellyaching that Film X is not a noir, why is it listed, &c. If you think I've missed a film that should be included, you could be right. Please share it below and I'll make the call as to whether it belongs and where. If you know of a reputable (licensed) release for any film listed above that hasn't been cited, please share.

Blimey - another scarily long list from Domino, to which the only appropriate response (besides a heartfelt well done and thank you) is I have a lot still to watch...

My one (rather lonely) suggestion is Pink String and Sealing Wax (Robert Hamer, 1945, R2 DVD from StudioCanal) which is BritishVictorian Noir - Googie Withers ensnares innocent Gordon Jackson in a plan to poison her husband (Mervyn Johns). Withers seems to me to be a British Barbara Stanwyck and the Brighton setting, that most 'sinful' of British seaside towns, just adds to the seedy, noirish feel. It's a film I really like, and I think its noir(ish) status is no less strong than many on the list already.

Oh yes, Pink String and Sealing Wax would fit the bill, as would another film directed by Robert Hamer, The Long Memory (1953) (which I think is available in the John Mills box which contains The October Man). Hamer had the temprement for noir: he once said, "I want to make films about people in dark rooms doing beastly things to each other". As for other British noir/ quasi-noir, I'd say Town On Trial (John Guillermin, 1957) is in with a shout. It features a guest turn by Charles Coburn, which is nice.

Oh, and Une si jolie petite plage (Yves Allégret, 1949) is a very brooding French flick that has been classed as Noir.

Thanks guys, I suspect there are more British, French, and other country noirs from this time period that I'm not as familiar with, so keep these or other additions coming

Good call on Allégret. His next movie Maneges is worth a punt too. His then wife Simone Signoret plays the callous whore gold-digger and hapless Bernard Blier who marries her inherits a mother -in-law / harpie with a laugh that would strip paint.
Has one of the harshest endings ever. Fans of Charles Williams will find lots of riches here.

So I hear: I keep meaning to check out more Allégret, as was very impressed by Une si jolie petite plage. I keep hoping that someone (MoC?) will treat us to an English language-friendly boxset of his finest films.

Just learned that Devil Thumbs a Ride and Gambling House had a commercial DVD release in Spain. There are a number of other titles available in Spain, like The Dark Past, Nightmare, the Whip Hand and the Company She Keeps (the last title doesn't have a Warner MOD release yet). Can't vouch for quality, but it was confirmed by Eddie Muller that Devil Thumbs a Ride (just like Beyond the Forest) can't have commercial region 1 release for now due to some rights issues.

Here is my list that I just updated recently with American and British noirs and their DVD/blu-ray availability.

Thanks for this, domino.

I'm aware the opening cutoff date here is 1940 and that Hitchcock is heavily represented as it is, but I have trouble imagining a scenario wherein his British film Sabotage doesn't qualify at least as some sort of proto-noir. I realize that's probably an entirely different thread but I wanted to toss it out.

Also, given that Panic in the Streets is listed, I'd say the Boultings' Seven Days to Noon, which follows a similar format and is nearly as wonderful, is worth including on the British list.

A couple of Japanese suggestions.

Pale Flower (Masahiro Shinoda 1964)
Noirish film about a yakuza who falls in with a thrill-seeking woman. In the Criterion Collection.

Zero Focus (Yoshitaro Nomura 1961)
A 'Hitchcockian' movie about a woman whose husband disappears in mysterious circumstances

Both available on Hulu Plus, I believe.

One omission in the Foreign Noir section is Bitter Rice / Riso amaro (Giuseppe De Santis, 1949). From the posters and stills you would probably expect a neo-realist docu-drama about rice harvesters but it's actually a film noir melodrama that integrates a rice harvest as the background for a crime plot. I saw it about six years ago via the Italian R2 from Cristaldi Film (includes English subtitles) and I'm surprised to learn that there hasn't been another home video release for it since. Thankfully, it's available for streaming via the Criterion section on Hulu Plus.

The Big Clock was on TCM yesterday. I was surprised how good it looked. The detail was super sharp, contrast was very good and consistent fine grain. It's not a title I'd think Universal would release on blu? Maybe they will license it out.

Massive update of the list with tons of new home video releases updated in the first two posts courtesy of Ashirg's hard work!

Also, the Dark Corner's Blu-ray rights are a bit of a mystery right now: Kino Lorber tried to get it and was told no from Fox, and Twilight Time claims they don't have it either... could it really be coming from Criterion?

Maybe they really want Lucille Ball in the collection.

Not sure if this has been posted before. Eddie Muller's top 25 noirs.

If Lucille ball happens, it will be the Douglas sirk film.

The Strange Love of Martha Ivers is in the public domain. Who is likely to own the elements?

Maybe this is the Milestone coming to Criterion, although Of Mice and Men seems more likely.
