Etiquette Pictures / Vinegar Syndrome Announce Partnership with Xenon Pictures.

3/31/2015 - For Immediate Release:

Vinegar Syndrome and Etiquette Pictures, in partnership with Xenon Pictures, are proud to announce that they will be bringing three of the most culturally significant and controversial films of the 1970s to Blu-ray for the very first time.

Melvin Van Peebles 1971 underground masterpiece, SWEET SWEETBACKS'S BADASSSS SONG and Ralph Bakshi's visually stunning and controversial 1975 film COONSKIN will be making their US Blu-ray debuts, newly restored from their 35mm negatives. Both films will be released through Etiquette Pictures, the sister company of acclaimed genre film distributors, Vinegar Syndrome. Rudy Ray Moore's seminal blaxploitation classic, DOLEMITE (1975) will also be making its Blu-ray debut from Vinegar Syndrome, newly restored from rare 35mm vault materials. In addition to SWEETBACK, Etiquette Pictures will be releasing two other early works from Van Peebles, his 1967 debut feature, STORY OF A THREE DAY PASS and his 1973 musical, DON'T PLAY US CHEAP. All releases will be done in partnership with Xenon Pictures, which has established itself as the leader in releasing independent and avant-garde African American cinema of the 1970s.

Etiquette Pictures and Vinegar Syndrome co-founder Joe Rubin said of the upcoming releases: "It's an honor to have the opportunity to preserve these incredible films from three of the most unique and uncompromising American auteurs of the past half century. Few of their contemporaries left a greater mark on the underground and independent film scene of the time than Van Peebles, Bakshi, and Moore."

Stephen Houden, Chief Operating Officer at Xenon is also looking forward to the releases, saying “We're very happy to have joined forces with Etiquette Pictures and Vinegar Syndrome. They share our love for the work of these visionary filmmakers and high regard for preserving these incredible and important films.”

SWEETBACK and COONSKIN are scheduled for Blu-ray and DVD release by Etiquette Pictures in late 2015, with DOLEMITE (VS), THREE DAY PASS (EP), and DON'T PLAY US CHEAP (EP) following in early 2016. Additional collaborations between Xenon, Etiquette Pictures and Vinegar Syndrome are planned for 2016.

Vinegar Syndrome was founded in 2012 by film archivists Joe Rubin and Ryan Emerson to preserve and release genre films, independent features and drive-in classics. In just over two years, VS has restored and released over 100 feature films on Blu-ray and DVD and has won international praise for their restorations of lost and forgotten works of genre cinema. In 2015, Rubin and Emerson formed a sister label to Vinegar Syndrome, Etiquette Pictures, to preserve and distribute significant and forgotten arthouse, experimental and underground cinema. Etiquette's first release will be James B. Harris' SOME CALL IT LOVING (1973) followed by Lawrence Schiller and L.M. Kit Carson's THE AMERICAN DREAMER (1971). - contact: joe@vinsyn.com for more information.

Founded in 1986, Xenon Pictures, Inc. is recognized in the U.S. home entertainment marketplace for creating the first significant labels focused on the Black audience market. In developing the label, Xenon forged relationships with some of the most revolutionary independent film pioneers: Melvin Van Peebles, Rudy Ray Moore, Jamaa Fanaka, Ralph Bakshi and Perry Henzell to name just a few, and sought out films that are not only commercial, but that were truly groundbreaking and have maintained their appeal for decades. Xenon's most recent film project, "Straight Outta Compton" (the story of the Gangster Rap group NWA) is releasing in August through Universal.
Wow, it'll be great to see restored versions of some of the awful looking Xenon releases.

My only issue with that statement is that it should be "Baadasssss" in Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song - three a's and five s's!

It is a fascinating film though and quite bleak in its own way, sort of doing for the Black Panthers what Zabriske Point did for Student Revolutionaries! (i.e. distills down until it embodies, mythologises and then destroys)

VS wrote:THE CUT-THROATS Limited-Edition DVD

At the close of WWII, an elite squad of American soldiers infiltrates a remote Nazi outpost with the intention of stealing battle plans and ending the war early. Unknown to his troops, the American Captain’s real motives for attacking the compound is to steal a hidden cache of Nazi jewels. In a bloody attack the soldiers storm the base, and discover beautiful Nazi women. The Americans take them as prisoners, but can they overcome their sexual desires and fulfill their mission? Will their corrupt officer let any of his troops make it out alive?

Directed by John Hayes (Baby Rosemary, Grave of the Vampire), THE CUT-THROATS is an early hybrid of Nazisploitation and sexploitation coming to DVD for the first time!

Here's how you can get this limited release...for FREE:

1. We’re giving it away for FREE to people who pre-order a Monthly Package. Pre-order the May package and you’ll get it free, pre-order the upcoming June package and you’ll get it free, etc…until we run out.
*limit one per customer*

2. Purchase for a fair price at a convention (Shock Stock, Texas Frightmare Weekend, etc).

3. IF we have leftover units, we’ll sell them on our website and at DiabolikDVD for $12 in a couple months.

THE CUT-THROATS limited release will start shipping in a few weeks to those who pre-order our May Package.

CRYPT OF THE LIVING DEAD aka HANNAH, QUEEN OF THE VAMPIRES will be making it's Blu-ray debut sourced from a newly discovered 35mm negative in pristine condition. This will be a limited release, more details to come.

Carlos Tobalina is back with another double bill of ANTICIPATION & the oddly titled FLESH POND.

Our partnership series with The American Genre Film Archive continues with NIGHT OF THE STRANGLER on DVD!

Lastly, FLYING ACQUAINTANCES featuring Darby Lloyd Rains and Jamie Gillis comes to home video for the first time ever!

VS's 5th limited edition Blu-ray, a double bill of Crypt of the Living Dead & House of the Living Dead is available to order now. Just giving all a heads up as it'll probably go faster than any of their previous limited editions, being a horror set rather than porn. Order it as part of the June package to get the previously detailed The Cut Throats limited edition DVD for free.

Limiting discs to 3000 at a high price and then name trashing customers and making terrible remarks about the movie?

The left-over copies of The Cut-Throats are now available for sale on the Vinegar Syndrome website, as well as Diabolik DVD. Anyone who wanted a copy but balked at having to order either the May or June package should jump before they're gone.

In other news - VS is apparently releasing their first Peek-a-rama double feature on Blu-Ray in September.

It's worth mentioning that if you've ever been curious about a Vinegar Syndrome or Etiquette Pictures film (same company, I'm not sure if I should be posting here or there), their streaming service Exploitation.tv has launched and includes most of each label's releases. Might be a good deal if you're not into blind-buying terrible movies.

At last! A Black Friday sale I can get excited about! Note that Etiquette Pictures titles will be included in the sale.
It is November here at the warehouse/filmlab/archive/mental ward that is the Vinegar Syndrome HQ. That means a few things. Some of us will be visiting family, others will go out West for some fresh air, and still others will stay here to guard the film with our lives. What it also means is that Thanksgiving is here and we are going to have our annual Black Friday Sale. Please visit our site http://www.VinegarSyndrome.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for the specifics, but here are the things you need to know.

Our annual Black Friday sale begins this Friday, November 27th and ends Monday the 30th.

1. Most all releases will be discounted 50% off.

2. We are not having a countdown clock to avoid the catastrophic, soul crushing, lamentation of their women destruction that was the site crash last year. The sale starts Friday and ends Monday (EST). Just keep checking until you get what you want.

3. We are doing yearly packages again this year, and they are going to be twice as great as last year. Check the site for specifics.

Two Yearly Package options will be available:
Yearly Package (Completionist)
Yearly Package (Blu-ray only)

4. We have much more stock than last year, but even if something runs out there will still be backorder on non-limited edition items. Limited editions will go to first come first serve. We will not ship partial orders.

5. We will work overtime to make sure orders ship out as quickly as possible starting next week.

6. Expect the unexpected.

7. Lastly, a bit of advice… It’s highly likely that the following limited edition releases will sell out during this sale (so snag one early):
CRYPT OF THE LIVING DEAD (limited Blu-ray/DVD)
THE YOUNG LIKE IT HOT / SWEET YOUNG FOXES (limited Blu-ray/DVD)
THE CUT-THROATS (limited DVD)

Thanks everyone!

Their new release of Roger Watkins' Corruption has as a "secret" bonus feature an HD scan of the extraordinary Last House On Dead End Street. Although, if I understand their Facebook postings correctly, the latter film may at some point receive its own disc with extras and so on. I certainly hope so.

It definitely will. The version on CORRUPTION is a scan of a theatrical print, but they've since found a better source and that's going to be the basis of their actual release.

Vinegar Syndrome confirmed via Facebook that they will follow Dolemite with another Rudy Ray Moore title every month:

May: The Human Tornado
June: Petey Wheatstraw
July: Disco Godfather

The also mention another Blaxploitation double bill in June; wondering if this will be their Etiquette Pictures' Van Peebles releases (Sweet Sweetback's Badasss Song and Story of a Three Day Pass/Don't Play Us Cheap.

I don't believe Candy Tangerine Man has ever been available in a version above barely watchable, so that's great news.

Truly there is no bottom to the niche horror Bluray market, as VS will be releasing Hobgoblins of MST3K fame in October
