Re: Steven Soderbergh
But he is tweeting that some (or all of it) are lies.
Wouldn't surprise me if he's trying to get this straight to streaming or something so he can still maintain the illusion of being retired from proper feature filmmaking, given how he seemed literally phyiscally incapable of not doing Magic Mike XXL.

Re: Steven Soderbergh
THR says the cast list also includes Michael Shannon, though since there's no mention of him in the Vulture report nor of Driver & MacFarlane in THR's, perhaps there's some conflicting news out there?

The Deadline article that Vulture links to as their source says that Michael Shannon dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.

Re: Steven Soderbergh
Wonder what's going to happen to The Knick if Soderbergh is making movies again, and has to work that shooting schedule around the show? That's assuming Cinemax accepts the 4 year renewal proposal.

Re: Steven Soderbergh
He shot season two in 74 days plus one second unit day, and was editing it as he went along.

Re: Steven Soderbergh
He's perhaps changed his mind since then (c'mon, this is Soderbergh). Doing press for The Girlfriend Experience he suggested he could go back to The Knick. I wonder if Starz might not make renewal contingent on it.willoneill wrote:I was of the understanding that he wouldn't be directing the show anymore. Re: Steven Soderbergh
Yes, he wants to do 4 more seasons of The Knick, but only if he's directing them and only if they're guaranteed to get to make them. The show is on Cinemax, not Starz.

Re: Steven Soderbergh
I never really understood the whole retirement thing with him to begin with, especially this semi-retirement of making television and working on other films. He always seemed to just direct whatever script struck his fancy, he doesn't fit the "I've said all I have to say" Bella Tarr kind of retirement.

Re: Steven Soderbergh
It's more our of frustration with the film industry, finding television to be more fulfilling, while also offering more freedom. If you've watched any of his interviews on various DVDs and Blu-rays recently (particularly on King of the Hill) he talks about this in a fair amount of detail.

Re: Steven Soderbergh
Yeah, my understanding is the dual difficulties with Che and Moneyball frustrated him to the point of simply not wanting to deal with the film finance system anymore. A few additional projects that couldn't see the light of day plus some minor difficulties with Side Effects sealed the deal. Presumably as a director for hire not having to deal with the money people at all would be his ideal setting.

And in the same tweet that spawned that immortal image, a release date; October 13, 2017.
Also, the full cast includes every non-Shannon actor mentioned previously, plus Katherine Waterston, Hilary Swank, and Jerry from Parks and Recreation.

I just stumbled upon an article where David Holmes reveals that he will be scoring this (and Mosaic).
Also, Katherine Heigl isn't in this, but Katie Holmes, Sebastian Stan, and Macon Blair are.

Re: Logan Lucky (Steven Soderbergh, 2017)
Love this sentiment from Soderbergh, mostly for the selfish reason that I want him continuing to work as a director, but also because that kind of self-awareness and clarity about his talents and how he can best be spending his time is refreshing. Not that he shouldn't have pursued painting if that was fulfilling to him, but recognizing that meeting as a painter the standard he's set as a filmmaker is wildly unlikely.Steven Soderbergh wrote:I was sitting there on set, realizing that this is the job that I should be doing. This is my job. I should be directing stuff. Nobody’s waiting around for my paintings. So I kind of flipped a switch. I got reconnected with what I like about the job.

Interesting title. At this rate, Soderbergh's next film will be titled Dapper Danny.

Phew, it's not about one of my least favourite actors, Logan Lerman then!
