Sony Announces First Waves of MOD (Manufacture on Demand) Blu-ray Releases.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has revealed plans to release five films as part of its first waves of Manufactured on Demand Blu-ray releases beginning on September 6th. Additional films will follow in the coming months and through next year.
The "Choice Collection" offers a diverse slate of titles, encompassing something for every taste, with a curated flow continuing throughout this year and into next.
The collection kicks off with the long awaited Blu-ray debuts of fan favorites The Karate Kid Part III (1989) and The Next Karate Kid (1994). In October, the slate includes Brian De Palma's edge-of-your-seat thriller Body Double (1984), Marie Antoinette (2006), which is celebrating its 10th Anniversary, and the acclaimed music documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston (2005). All features are presented in full high definition with lossless audio.
Blu-ray MOD is an exciting expansion of the existing DVD MOD program, which has seen a variety of the studio's fan favorites, cult classics and hidden gems come to market with a seamless consumer experience, via retailers such as Amazon.

If they're pressed, then great. If they're not, fuck Sony.

Re: Sony MOD Blu-rays
The cover images linked in the article are notably missing the Blu-Ray logo. Burned Blu-rays cannot legally use the Blu-Ray logo due to their instability, so outlook's looking grim already

Guess we'll find out if they are pressed or burned in a couple weeks at the latest when a brave soul buys one of the Karate Kid sequels

Amazon listings confirm they are BD-R. So, in summation, fuck Sony.

Re: Sony MOD Blu-rays
I'm a little surprised. With all the titles they license out to various labels I thought for sure that would be enough for them to avoid doing this.

Re: Sony MOD Blu-rays
Mill Creek would have surely taken all of these and then charged us 9.99 MSRP for pressed Blu-rays. Can't believe Marie Antoinette, which was supposed to come out on actual Blu-Ray almost ten years ago, is now ghettoized. There is no excuse for this trend, period

Re: Sony MOD Blu-rays
While all signs are pointing in the BD-R direction, Amazon has been known to put up their various standard disclaimers due to misinformation before. I need a direct statement from Sony or someone with a copy of one of the releases for me to be 100% convinced.
Personally I have no issue with BD-Rs, but I want the program to be successful, and having BD-Rs is gonna turn off too many collectors who are relied on for these releases.

I have to imagine that the Warner Archive's recent increased output has been a success considering how full steam ahead they've gone. Why wouldn't Sony just copy them?

Warner's in-house boutique Blu-ray line does seem to be flourishing.
That would be the rational move. Hopefully it's the one they've landed on.Drucker wrote:Why wouldn't Sony just copy them?

I feel like a novice, but what exactly does this all mean? MOD and burned blus?

Made on demand and burned as in copied with a computer's disk burning drive (think of it like making an audio cd off of your iTunes playlist).dda1996a wrote:I feel like a novice, but what exactly does this all mean? MOD and burned blus?

Didn't one of the other studios (Fox or Universal) try this and failed?

Not quite at the same level, but Artsploitation Films started off releasing their first couple of blu's on BD-R, though quickly swapped to pressed discs after numerous complaints.
Now they seem to've gone back to the burned route. Someone must be buying them, or there's so many hardliners yelling BD-or-nothing that they feel they can't afford to stop.

In addition to Little Women (1994) coming out 12/13/16, there is also Center Stage (2000) and Eight Crazy Nights (2002) on the same day.domino harvey wrote:The MIA Little Women now coming as a BD-R

Re: Sony MOD Blu-rays
I received it today. I watched the first few minutes and skipped ahead to a few scenes. It seems okay, but looks to be from an old master. Not mind blowing, but decent. Will post more comments when I have a chance to watch the whole thing.ianthemovie wrote:Can anybody comment on the quality of Marie Antoinette yet?

Today isn't going well for titles that I was sure that Criterion licensed. Guess we have good ole' Crazy Becker and his odd tastes to blame. Still, given all of the re-releases (Strangelove, etc) - perhaps in another five years, who knows.captveg wrote:1/10/17

(recent member to this board; appreciative for these types of posts; sorry for the sloppiness of this original post)
Is there any further comment on the quality of the Marie Antoinette blu ray? Are there any special features? I like Spanglish too so any word on the quality of that blu ray would be helpful. It seems strange that, from what I've seen, these range from 20-30 dollars with a quality like this.
Thanks

I guess this answers a few of my questions, though I'm still shocked by the price. The apparently awkward packaging seems odd too. If I'm going to spend $30 on Spanglish then it needs to last so my grandkids can see it...
