1038 Marriage Story
Marriage Story
A love story about divorce. A marriage coming apart and a family coming together. Marriage Story is a hilarious and harrowing, sharply observed, and deeply compassionate film from the acclaimed writer-director Noah Baumbach. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson deliver tour-de-force performances as Charlie, a charismatic New York theater director wedded to his work, and Nicole, an actor who is ready to change her own life. Their hopes for an amicable divorce fade as they are drawn into a system that pits them against each other and forces them to redefine their relationship and their family. Featuring bravura, finely drawn supporting turns from Alan Alda, Ray Liotta, and Laura Dern—who won an Academy Award for her performance here—as the trio of lawyers who preside over the legal battle, Marriage Story (nominated for six Academy Awards, including best picture) is a work of both intimacy and scope that ultimately invokes hope amid the ruins.

This scouting notice for his next project was posted on Twitter yesterday.

According to IMDb, Untitled Noah Baumbach Project is currently filming, and has a release date of November 30 (on Netflix). Also, Greta Gerwig seems to have quietly joined the cast (although nobody seemed to notice her two-line cameo in Meyerowitz).

Re: Noah Baumbach
The date doesn't actually having sourcing, it just comes from nowhere. Netflix doesn't date its movies this far in advance.
(And also, Netflix has actually never been formally attached to this, as far as we know - and they're generally very upfront about listing what they've got in production. I've heard things about Baumbach being incredibly dissatisfied with Meyerowitz's release, and am interested - if he is continuing this partnership (if he even gets a say in it, considering it's the producers' call) - what they might be doing to rectify that unease. I personally feel the fact that Netflix has strongly pared back its theatrical releases outside NY/LA even since First they Killed My Father is a legitimate scandal which has gone unnoticed due to the basic fact that most who'd care about it live in that same two city bubble and still have these titles playing for weeks, as opposed to single-screen, single-week runs in the smallest theaters in major markets just to say they've done it.)

Do tell! I've seen it twice and didn't pick up on that. Is she a voice on a phone or something? The Narrator Returns wrote:(although nobody seemed to notice her two-line cameo in Meyerowitz).

She's the voice of Stiller's wife on the phone.

That's cool. Will have to look out for that the next time I watch (which I definitely will; it's my favorite Baumbach in a while).

This cast is only getting more eclectic, as Ray Liotta is in it as well.

Does anyone know wether it was shot on film? It looks to be so, but it's also a Netflix production?

Re: Marriage Story (Noah Baumbach, 2019)
At least when Okja was shot, Bing said he wanted to shoot on film but Netflix's 4K mandate forced him to shoot digitally. I am not sure wether this film started as a Netflix production or they just bought the rights, that's why I asked.
Anyway, looks beautiful and Ill take all the Adam Driver I can get

Re: Marriage Story (Noah Baumbach, 2019)
It's a Heyday Films production, distributed by Netflix. I find it strange that Netflix would be mandating 4K, especially because they've even had lowly comedy specials (like Aziz Ansari's) shot on 16mm as recently as a few weeks ago, and because 35mm is a similar if not somewhat higher resolution to 4K.

Re: Marriage Story (Noah Baumbach, 2019)
Beats me, that's what I remember reading about. I guess they hade a different mindset a few years back but are now embracing everything. I'm guessing it's also down to big name directors mandating film (PTA, Baumbach, Jonze who directed Ansari's special)

Re: Marriage Story (Noah Baumbach, 2019)
Netflix still mandates 4K but allows exemptions on a case-by-case basis, which are presumably easier to get if you're someone like Baumbach or Jonze. They also require an exemption if you want to shoot wider than 2.00:1, which (since Okja is 2.39:1) Bong was able to secure or wasn't a requirement at the time.

Initial reactions from Venice are effusively positive, with Michael Phillips calling it "a knockout" and praise abound for the two lead performances

This is bound to become one of the year's most critically acclaimed movies. It might already be, in fact.

I am all about this being the Oscar season where Noah Baumbach finally gets his due. Those reactions are remarkably positive, especially for a director as divisive as this!

Re: Marriage Story (Noah Baumbach, 2019)
Anyone else feels reviews today are preposterously inflated. So many things get scores of close to 100 it is kinda crazy. I find most critically acclaimed films overrated.
Though the above isn't a screed on Baumbach and his movies, just an observation about the hyperbolic nature of film criticism today. And we know where that originates from. Its the same devastation that journalism is suffering from. The insatiable lust and thirst for clicks, views, likes, comments, and shares. That is all there is to journalism today and criticism is going the same way.
For the second time, this isn't a screed against Baumbach. I really like him. His movies are so singular. I found his last film - The Meyerowitz stories absolutely lovely and I against all odds found Ben Stiller very moving. It was unfortunate that that movie didn't seem to generate much excitement of any kind anywhere. I expect this to be similarly good. I don't think he's made a bad film yet (from the ones I have seen). I think the awards season rollout and big stars will give it more visibility.
