Re: Gaumont French Releases
So is there a definitive list of French (or EU) releases that have been confirmed to have English subtitles somewhere? I've picked up a few titles that originally listed them on Amazon, but in fact didn't, so just curious what the best source for info on this is.

Re: Gaumont French Releases
DVDClassik actually published Gaumont's entire release schedule for 2017 a couple of days ago on their website. Quite an exciting slate of titles, among which I see new restorations of La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc, two Feuillade serials, and Gance's both versions of J'accuse--and in 2018 finally the Vigo complete set.

Re: Gaumont French Releases
Going by Gaumont's 4k resto of Fantomas (on Kino's blu), I think their Vampires transfer could eadily beat Kino's, not to mention original intertitles.

I saw their Joan of Arc restoration in theaters 2 years ago and it seemed to easily beat the MoC one.

What's wrong with the Kino release of Vampires?

Re: Gaumont French Releases
They replaced original French language intertitles with English ones, but the text in the film is all in French anyway, so that is has to be subtitled. It's a mess.

Also it is from an older transfer. Just compare Kino's Fantomas with Les vampires to see what 4K resto could do to these silent gems.

Does Fantomas have the frame-rate stuttering issue I read that Vampires had?

Re: Gaumont French Releases
I noticed it on the credits when I watched it last month. During the film I couldnt really notice it, but it doesn't mean it wasn't there.

Re: Gaumont French Releases
My Gaumont Danton blu ray is dead. Anybody experienced problems with Gaumont discs? I see on this old blu-ray.com forum thread that some early French blu discs have problems.
I'm gonna have to purchase it again unfortunately.

Re: Gaumont French Releases
I don't know the termination date of mine. It's still playing, but has developed the brown inner ring. So it wont last forever. Is there any indication that Gaumont ever did new better copies?Rayon Vert wrote:My Gaumont Danton blu ray is dead. Anybody experienced problems with Gaumont discs? Re: Gaumont French Releases
I previously had a problem with the Gaumont French Cancan, which would get stuck right during the French Cancan finale. I contacted the seller and they said they never had a problem reported and weren't interested in mine. I switched to the BFI for that one. My Danton, which was good as of last year, now freezes right at the beginning - logo, then copyright information, etc. Hopefully Criterion upgrades Danton at some point. I'll be choosy buying Gaumont in the future.

Re: Gaumont French Releases
Gaumont is one of the French label which use QOL as a manufacturer. It turns put QOL had an issue with one of their resin batch, which led to a rot issue. I guess Danton, being a relatively older release, was pressed there.

Re: Gaumont French Releases
Just when I thought I'd save money this Xmas....
Hopefully the extras have English subtitles too. Wonder if they will have a Blu-ray only (non-limited) for J'Accuse.

Hopefully MoC will licence the 1919 J'Accuse for over here.
