Kino us licensed another big batch of MGM titles

All but 9 will be DVD and Blu-ray - 9 BD only (3 previously released by KLSC on DVD)!
Given that last line, I wouldn't be surprised if a number of these are former Twilight Time titles.

The Kino rep said that 7 of the new MGM titles were released by Twilight Time and 2 are getting new 4K transfers and 3 are ones that Kino released on dvd.

Bill Gunn's Personal Problems is coming to BD in July.
While I've only ever seen Ganja & Hess, this looks like a great rescue effort, and sounds really promising.

Matewan would be absolutely tremendous. Does that mean that other titles released on horrible Artisan DVDs will be coming, too?

Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover is great as well. I've never seen the MGM burn-on-demand disc.

It has been year's since I've seen it, but I remember it being one of the better films of the Eighties. Haskell Wexler's cinematography is gorgeous and has never been well represented on DVD. I hope that Kino Lorber is able to obtain a superior master that does the film justice.

And a film about labor struggles seems all too relevant in 2018...

If you're a big fan of John Sayles's films, it's a must buy. If you have strong reservations about him as a filmmaker, I'd hold off.

Really enjoyed that one, but I think I'm fine with my Mill Creek double feature Blu-Ray with Puppet Masters that cost like $4

Presented with this list:
Dogs of War
Under Fire
Salvador
Mississippi Burning
Khartoum
Zulu
The Bounty
The Killer Elite
Lenny
1984 (the three-year window is up in December)
The Kino rep said:
Okay, no more hints We have two of these, plan to do a new 4K transfer from the original negative on one of them and re-release the other with some minor additional cleanup and maybe new extras.
He also mentioned a couple other former Twilight Time titles that they went after, but some other label got: The Mechanic and 10 to Midnight.

Most of those do sound like KL titles, so I'm surprised it's only two, but I imagine one of them is Mississippi Burning

Jsteffe and hearthesilence, thank you for your opinions. I haven’t seen anything from John Sayles yet. Matewan is the film I would like to start with, the subject interests me and it has James Earl Jones.

L.A., Matewan is excellent, and everything he did in his first two decades as a writer and/or director is pretty much on par with it, but the best Sayles entry point, at least for me, is his masterful Lone Star. I'm also quite fond of Limbo. He never really repeats himself, either.

And, I'm not joking here: his screenplays for Joe Dante's Piranha and The Howling are amazing, and his cameo in Dante's Matinee never fails to make me laugh.

I would have assumed Eight Men Out would be the universal entry point for him.

I doubt this is a popular opinion, but I think Honeydripper is Sayles' most obvious crowd-pleaser. Lone Star and Matewan are his best, in my opinion. Eight Men Out is worth it only if you're into baseball, and more specifically, baseball history.

I don't know anything about baseball outside of that film and Burns'.

Alright, thank you as well. So all in all, I think we are talking of a talented filmmaker here. Let’s begin delving into the man’s work then.

This is fantastic news. I haven't seen it since its original theatrical release, it'll be fun to revisit. I hope it holds up.

Geronimo came out in a ridiculously bare bones Twilight Time disc, and I'm hoping KL will rectify that. Very possibly Walter Hill's finest work.

(1) It just came out this year, so Twilight Time's rights probably won't expire until 2021 or so; (2) GERONIMO: AN AMERICAN LEGEND is licensed from Sony, and I don't believe Kino has a licensing deal with them at present.
