Extremely sad news about Kira Muratova. I hope her work will gain a lot more attention now, as is sadly all-too-often the case with people's passing - and the very much (renewed? new?) interest in film studies and criticism on highlighting women directors (not that her work need be ghettoized as such, but...)

Danny Kirwan of Fleetwood Mac. Joined the band in the late '60s and immediately established himself as one of the great guitarists in the band's history, surpassing Jeremy Spencer and proving himself to be a perfect foil and collaborator for Peter Green. They recorded "Albatross" and "Oh Well" together as well as one great album, Then Play On, before Green left the group. From that point on, along with Christine McVie, Kirwan became responsible for much of the group's best material until his falling out with the band after Bare Trees. His contributions on that last album were enormous, but he recorded little work afterwards and became the most tragic figure in the band's history, battling mental illness and addictions, even becoming homeless. Terribly sad what happened to him.

Zhang Junzhao, a member of the illustrious Beijing Film Academy class of '82, whose revisionist war film One and Eight (1983) is retrospectively reckoned as the first "Fifth Generation" feature—but hardly anyone noticed it at the time, thanks in part to the censors who blocked its international distribution until 1987. Most of his later films were comparatively safe genre exercises like The Lonely Murderer (a martial-arts piece) and Blood from Mother's Hand (a medical melodrama, distinguished by its then-novel Taiwanese setting), though 1989's Arc Light was a reportedly interesting psychodrama that seems to be completely unavailable even through back channels. Like many other Fifth Generation directors, he eventually turned to TV; his last credit was the 2011 series High Walls in the Desert, a prison drama set in Xinjiang, where he lived for a long spell before entering the Film Academy.

French editor Françoise Bonnot.

Even if you don't immediately recognise the name, you'll almost certainly have seen at least one of the films that she cut: the vast majority of Costa-Gavras' output (from Z to Mad City nearly thirty years later - she won an Oscar for the former) followed by all of Julie Taymor's from Titus onwards, along with (amongst much else) Dario Argento's Four Flies on Grey Velvet, Roman Polanski's The Tenant, two for Michael Cimino (Year of the Dragon and The Sicilian) and - in a delightfully unexpected swerve - the 1984 ZAZ comedy Top Secret!.

Wow. Contemporary hip-hip is largely off my radar, but he was a big name. This is a blow to that genre, I’m sure.

Also an abnormally and unapologetically cruel and violent person, so it's a blow in one sense, but in another...

Yes, I did hear that he was remarkably homophobic and accused of physical abuse. Will be interesting to see how the community as a whole reacts.

From what I know about the situation he was both a violent individual and incredibly homophobic. He still had a fanbase sure but his ability to market himself was limited because of his behavior. Most people I know who are into Hip Hop either didn't like him from the outset or dropped him after the abuse allegations came about. Regardless his death at twenty is a remarkable waste.

Not only that, but he'd compare himself to Dylann Roof, actively engaged his fans in witness tampering against the woman he abused, all sorts of weird noxious shit. Obviously if he could have turned his life around none of this is worthy of a death sentence, but it's a world's smallest violin situation to be sure.

Not really even worth bringing out a violin. I just read the full extent about what this man did and I've lost all sympathy. My bad for even trying to look sympathetic. I mean who the hell beats their pregnant girlfriend almost to death and expects pity from anyone? Good Lord.

Film title designer Richard Greenberg. If you watched any movies over the past forty years, you've almost certainly seen his work.
