There's a great lineage of interesting Arsene Lupin adaptations that Sy now belongs to-- no idea why WB is still sitting on the best, their pre-code version with both Barrymores. That would make an incredible Criterion, but it's way too obscure for them to go for

Also, I had no idea there was a Netflix French series starring Gerard Depardieu and Benoît Magimel til reading about it in that article. Why is Netflix not recommending me things like this that I'd want to see instead of trying to get me to watch the Mindy Project?

I'm surprised by McHale's cancellation, I don't know anything about Wolf's show but I imagine it's a Daily Show/Full Frontal style. Netflix must be really tightening things up if a guy standing in front of a green screen for half an hour gets the axe after a season.

Maybe that kind of format just doesn't work as well for Netflix as it does with traditional cable.

Aside from new work by Jeremy Saulnier and Cary Joji Fukunaga, in the last month they've also released new films from Gareth Evans (of supremely enjoyable The Raid films), Nicole Holocfener and, most impressivley, Tamara Jenkins (The Savages being one of my favourite films in its year of release).

This, the new series from Mike Flanagan, and Alfonso Cuarón's Roma makes this a very exciting year, at least for me.

Also Paul Greengrass, whose 22 July came out last week and I watched last night. I was expecting a United 93-style reenactment of that day, but it was much more of a courtroom drama mixed with the personal story of one of the survivors. Overall I thought it was quite good. Of all of Greengrass' films, it reminded me most of Resurrected.

I must be blind because i can't seem to find the thread for it so i'm commenting here about the new season of Making A Murderer. I've never seen the equal of Kathleen Zellner single mindedness in print or film (fiction or non) as she absolutely scorches the earth in her quest (quest in a medieval sense) to free Avery from jail. The only person that comes to mind is The Terminator (1984) and that character was not human. Of course this only makes the Wisconsin penal community dig its heels in even further as this outsider is not so much making waves as tsunamis. The most riveting season of television this year by a mile.

A lot like the musical bits he'd do on SNL. Weirdly enough I've never heard his straight stand-up, but I remember stuff like the Hanukkah song played on alt-rock stations every Christmas.

After giving my Roald Dahl books to my son last night to read, I found it funny to see today that Netflix have announced plans to adapt a number of his stories.
On Tuesday, Netflix confirmed it had secured the rights for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; the sequel Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator’ The BFG – most recently adapted by Steven Spielberg in 2017 – The Twits; Matilda; George’s Marvellous Medicine; Boy: Tales of Childhood; Going Solo; The Enormous Crocodile; The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me; Henry Sugar; Billy and the Minpins; The Magic Finger; Esio Trot; Dirty Beasts; and Rhyme Stew.

Not included in the deal are novels such as James and the Giant Peach; Danny the Champion of the World; or Fantastic Mr Fox, which was most recently adapted in an animated film by Wes Anderson in 2009.

Netflix confirmed that production will begin on the first of the Dahl animated series in 2019, but no schedule has been announced.
I'm hesitantly looking forward to it (the Dahl family are on board) but I can't say I'm too thrilled to read of a planned "story universe" extending outside of the books. Sounds a bit too Marvel-ly to me.

W/Bob and David, the Mr Show followup limited series, popped up in my recommended section on Netflix and I'd somehow completely missed its existence when it debuted three years ago. Oh sweet merciful ignorance. Of all the recent revisits to well-loved cancelled series, surely none are worse than this? I made it exactly one episode and five minutes into a second before giving up ship. There's a moment in the first episode that captures perfectly what's wrong here: a group of friends are playing poker and sharing their New Years Resolutions. The joke is soon apparent that everyone but one has outrageous goals, but only the friend with a realistic goal is treated harshly for his resolution. A decent comedy skit premise. Until the episode grinds it into the ground by going back to it again and again and again, never less-amusingly than when we actually get a Transformers/trans joke-- this is literally the kind of hacky shit this creative team would have slaughtered twenty years ago. How pathetic. Though not as pathetic as the first couple minutes of episode two, revolving around such fresh jokes as not being able to say the phrase "the prophet Mohammad"-- you can literally see the audience members during this segment forcing themselves to give depressing pity laughs. Then the episode turned to what appeared to be middle eastern terrorists talking about Hollywood projects in a chic LA restaurant and I just couldn't anymore and shut it off. Good God, were these two dropped on their head repeatedly in the last couple decades?

Netflix has ordered a 10-episode live-action remake of the classic anime Cowboy Bebop

I've finally bitten the bullet and subscribed to Netflix. I had already seen some of their films on the big screen like Roma, Casting JonBenet, 21 July, Okja, The Meyerowitz Stories, Private Life & Operation Finale. So far I have watched Amanda Knox, Our Souls at Night, The Ballard of Buster Scruggs & Outlaw King (what a bore that one was). I have about another 20 films I want to watch and two series: Mindhunters & Maniac.

Must say I'm surprised at the excellent visual quality of everything. I just wish they included the directors name on the movies which would make it easier to help determine what to watch.

Springsteen on Broadway was really enjoyable and emotional. I don't think it's as perfect as those going to see it on Broadway had made it out to be - some of the rearranged songs don't pack as much punch as they could ("Born in the USA" redone as a shaggy blues number should have been more impactful than it was, but it just didn't really work), and despite his lovely words about her and her strong contributions to a couple of songs, having Patti Scialfa join him on stage was a bit jarring considering the intimacy of the rest of the show. The highs (the opening 45 minutes or so, the anecdote about his father visiting him before his first child was born, the final performance of "Born to Run") were very, very high, though. And it's lovely that he saw fit to have it recorded and released this way so those who couldn't drop 4 figures on tickets could experience it.
