Explains a lot, thanks
In case you're being sarcastic, your #1 is worth 0 points until someone else votes for it, at which point it's worth 25 points. Your #2 is worth 24, #3 23, etc.

Same, although I'll confess to still being at a total loss re: how points are assigned in list projects - guessing even top-of-list orphans didn't accumulate enough points to be on this list?
For this list:
#1 = 25 points
[...]
#25 = 1 point

EDIT like swo said! Lousy page breaks

Wasn't being sarcastic at all! I knew what I was getting into submitting a list without much participation in the project itself - but now I know from a tabulation standpoint and this is very helpful, the "orphans aren't in the list" thing was not something I realized

The rationale is that it's a forum consensus list, and if only one person voted for it there's no consensus. Also if it weren't for that, #36 on this list would be a giant tie between every #1 orphan

By my quick math, based on zedz' earlier remarks, the as of yet unposted Orphans list is at least three times the size of the actual list

Two very unsurprising supplementary lists.

MOST POPULAR DIRECTORS
or
By what order of magnitude did Michel Gondry defeat the competition?

Just factoring in the qualifying votes (though I doubt that including the orphans would paint a different picture), eight directors gained multiple votes:

1. Michel Gondry (9 videos, 583 points)
2. Chris Cunningham (5 videos, 213 points)
3. Spike Jonze (5 videos, 122 points)
4. David Fincher (2 videos, 57 points)
5. Annabel Jankel & Rocky Morton (2 videos, 56 votes)
6. Jarvis Cocker (2 videos, 52 points)
7. Mark Romanek (2 videos, 48 points)
8. Dougal Wilson (2 videos, 35 points)

MOST VIDEOGENIC ARTISTS

The first list ranks the artists based on what videos made the final list; the second ranks them according to total votes, so it captures the ones who had multiple split votes.

MOST VIDEOGENIC ARTISTS FROM THE FINAL LIST

1. The Chemical Brothers (3 videos, 172 points)
2. Bjork (3 videos, 120 points)
3. Aphex Twin (3 videos, 93 points)
4. R.E.M. (2 videos, 152 points)
5. OK Go (2 videos, 83 points)

MOST VIDEOGENIC ARTISTS FROM THE TOTAL VOTE

1. The Chemical Brothers (5 videos)
2. Bjork (5 videos)
3. Madonna (5 videos)
4. The White Stripes (4 videos)
5. Fiona Apple (4 videos)
6. Pet Shop Boys (4 videos)
7. Aphex Twin (3 videos)
8. OK Go (3 videos)
9. Talking Heads (3 videos, + 1 Tom Tom Club video and 1 Byrne / Eno video)
10. Peter Gabriel (3 videos)
11. Massive Attack (3 videos)
12. Yo La Tengo (3 videos)
13. Missy Elliott (3 videos)
14. David Bowie (3 videos)
15. New Order (3 videos)

Wow, props to whoever else was on the Lele Pons crew with me— 14 on a top 50 is way, way better than I expected. My list was almost entirely orphans but that top two was also my top two, so okay

Thanks for stepping in to tally, zedz!
Ditto, and likewise re: the Fibbers vid, which I heart so hard. And thanks for letting me join in. I too suspected the results might wind up being something like "Thriller" + a few Gondrys (as opposed to, like, his entire output -- maybe there should be a Gondry-off) + 1000 treasured orphans, so any consensus is nice! Am happy to see a couple vids that I had in the 26-30 spots get placed, because they were hard cuts.

The Orphans of Zedz

Top 10:
Hello Skinny – The Residents (Graeme Whifler, 1979) – Too creepy? Too old? Too John Heartfieldische? Probably just too damn Residential.
Ali Click – Brian Eno (Jerome Lefdup / Lari Flash / Brian Eno, 1992)
Turning Brown and Torn in Two – Tall Dwarfs (Chris Knox, 1983) – An understandable acquired taste, but I love it to bits, and it’s one of the videos that first sent me down the experimental filmmaking rabbithole.

The Rest:
Elektrobank – The Chemical Brothers (Spike Jonze, 1997) – What the actual fuck? I thought this would be a shoo-in!
Mea Culpa – David Byrne & Brian Eno (Bruce Conner, 1981)
Splat – Bailter Space (Julie Hermelin, 1995)
He’s Got His Mother’s Hips – John Grant (Casey & Ewan, 2018) – If you haven’t watched this, it’s probably the most fun of my orphans (which wouldn’t be hard).
Sensoria – Cabaret Voltaire (Peter Case, 1984)
Oh Baby – LCD Soundsystem (Rian Johnson, 2018) – This is my karmic payback for all those videos I recommended that I ended up not voting for, but some other sucker did. (You know who you are). Apart from ‘Elektrobank’ (again: what the fuck?) I think this was the only narrative video on my list.

4. Across the Universe (Fiona Apple)
5. Into My Arms (Nick Cave)
6. Bedtime Story (Madonna)

7. Lucas With the Lid Off (Lucas)
8. Sky's the Limit (The Notorious B.I.G.)
9. Afrika Shox (Leftfield)

11. Jump They Say (David Bowie)

21. Rabbit in Your Headlights (UNKLE)
22. Try (Michael Penn)
23. Hyperballad (Bjork)
24. Road to Nowhere (Talking Heads)
25. Paper Bag (Fiona Apple)

I came to them later in the game, but I wish I'd pushed for the two Tom Scharpling-directed videos on my list (especially "Labrador", a shot-for-shot remake of the "Voices Carry" video with Jon Wurster as the asshole boyfriend).

All of his videos that I've watched have been so funny and well-done that I've always come back to them months/years later. In addition to the two mentioned: New Pornographers "Moves," Aimee Mann "Charmer," Frankie Cosmos "Apathy"; several more...

Oooof! Yes, I think my first appearance on the list in #11, which is.....1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins. I think I have 21 orphans by the looks of things. Doesn't help that I didn't pick a Gondry/Jonze/Cunningham video though.

My apologies soundchaser, as I love the Hey Ya video by Outkast too and forgot to vote for it. Similarly The Narrator Returns the David Bowie video Jump They Say crossed my mind a number of times.

Usually the final result is far less interesting than all the surrounding 'orphans' anyway and I went wilfully contrarian in the sense that I knew that Come Into My World and Sugar Water would not really need any extra boosting from me (though I like Elektrobank too!) and took that as my opportunity to mention other titles. Here's my list with orphans in blood red:

1. Vletrmx by Autreche (fan video) - this is my main contrarian pick: an amateur video shot handheld at night in an unnamed city to the strains of Autechre's Vletrmx with "a travelogue" title. It has haunted me for years now as the perfect match of visuals to the soundtrack. If I ever did a J.G. Ballard anthology film, I'd throw this in as a little interstitial piece between stories, or as an intermission piece. The whistling of the wind and even the way that the song abruptly cuts out to just leave us with the ambient traffic noise feels perfectly Ballardian!

This is probably where I'm bringing more to it than the video itself offers, and I really don't want to find out any more about the making of this, or that it was just someone playing around and testing their new camera and editing skills out more than intending to make an 'artistic statement on urban alienation' or anything like that, but that's the beauty of user generated content in the way that it provides non-commercialised grist to the mill of a viewer's imagination!

2. Acid Rain by Lorn - talked about in thread
3. Blood In My Eyes by Atari Teenage Riot - talked about in thread
4. Anvil by Lorn - talked about in thread
5. Tookah by Emiliana Torrini - linked to in the thread - this was one of my favourite finds during the project. I love the album and this particular song but I had never tracked down the music video, and love the disembodied hands and heads coming out of the darkness. Very witchcraft and black magic feeling!
6. Strawberry Swing by Coldplay - linked to in thread. Love the moving chalk drawings on the pavement conceit. Though watching a lot of the dom&nic videos, they do seem to have something against squirrels! And zedz aside, I quite like the song too!
7. The Test by The Chemical Brothers - linked to in thread. For my money the best Chemical Brothers video in a strong field
8. Take on Me by a-ha
9. Gosh by Jamie xx - linked to in thread
10. Afrika Shox by Leftfield
11. Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack - linked to in thread
12. Optical Sound by [The User] - mentioned in thread. No link but the 'trailer' on YouTube
13. Savoure Le Rouge by Indochine - the wonderful morphing collage video directed by Marc Caro. There's a link in the mmm...Music thread from when I went through the Global Videobyte episodes I had recorded to VHS.
14. Happiness by Goldfrapp
15. Si Mince by Arielle - linked to in thread
16. DVNO by Justice - linked to in thread. This was introduced to me by the project and I like the typographical winking going on throughout!
17. Pop Culture by Madeon - linked to in thread
18. Inspector Norse by Todd Terje
19. Here We Go Again by OK Go
20. Money For Nothing by Dire Straits - linked to in thread
21. Slow by Kylie Minogue - linked to in first page of the Algo-rhythms thread. Lots of sensuous writhing going on there!
22. I See, So I See So by Broadcast
23. ABC pour casser by Peter Kitsch - see the mmm...Music Global Videobyte post for link to that one
24. Leave Me Alone by Michael Jackson - the most telling, and tragic, Jackson video
25. Smart by Matthew Herbert

This really shows that we needed the ability to vote for 50 videos rather than just 25! Despite the restrictions I threw in three particular videos that I did not get time to talk about in the thread, so I was not expecting to garner any support for them, but knew I would be able to highlight them in the orphans post, so here goes!

18. Inspector Norse by Todd Terje - a faux documentary piece about a rather strangely earnest young man. Luckily(?) the kitchen sink noxious chemical mixing is not for any particular homemade bombs but for a different kind of light show! The modern Billy Liar?
22. I See, So I See So by Broadcast - I really like the 70s new age hippie style of this one, with the beautifully fractured editing and animated overlays. It's like a Wiccan invocation ritual!
25. Smart by Matthew Herbert - just because it recreates that sense of rifling through Argos catalogues! The only elements that would need to be added would be the little yellow biros and the machine to tap the product code into to check if it was currently available in the stockroom at the back of the store!

Also I have a couple of titles that would not fit into the 25 voted for and did not appear on the list either, so I'll try and get to those later too.

Amish Paradise, although I posted the video, didn't make my final cut, as I had to incorporate suggestions from others in this thread...
Even though I didn't campaign for these videos (Chandelier, The Denial Twist, Single Ladies) I'm really surprised nobody else voted for them!
I agree about the Top50 individual ballot option to include more "orphans" from the top25

Thank you swo17.
From the orphan list, I notice the song titles are rather short (most of the time one to 3 words)
Michel Gondry is amazing! Even though the votes were split between his many great videos, he still garnered more than anyone else...

I found it really hard to order these so in the end they largely stayed the way I jotted them down. Still, with so many orphans it didn't really matter!

1. Kraftwerk - The Robots - I can't believe The Robots was an orphan! Obviously predates MTV and not only are the electronic ties so cool, I am 99% certain that the slow motion movements were just the band moving very, very slowly rather than any post-production.
2. KLF - Justified and Ancient - not my favourite of their Stadium House singles (Last Train to Transcentral!!!) but getting Tammy involved, presumably explaining to her about the Illuminati - jeez, she must have been totally dumbfounded!
3. The The - The Mercy Beat - every track on Infected had a video, this Greene meets Lowry in Bolivia is the best of the series (though I do like the Heartland video)
4. Kate Bush - The Sensual World (Peter Richardson of Comic Strip and Kate doing their Joycean thing)
5. Mylene Farmer - Desenchantee (discussed before)
6. Cameo - Candy (discussed before)
7. David Sylvian - Red Guitar (Anton Corbijn referencing Angus McBean's stunning photography work - he's the old chap in the video, did some great work with actors of the 30s/40s including Vivien Leigh)
8. Propaganda - Dr Mabuse (Corbijn again; the production on A Secret Wish is terrific and the German band riff on their country's finest filmmaker - well, maybe apart from Fassbinder)
9. Earth, Wind and Fire - Let's Groove (this and September have the same trippy aesthetic, but this song is pure fuuuuuunk)
10. Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Breaking The Girl (Stephane Sednaoui - see if you can spot River Phoenix)

11. Smashing Pumpkins - 1979 (could've been this or Tonight, Tonight really, but I love the teens having a great night narrative)
12. Hot Chip - Boy From School (Hammer and Tongs doing a lo-fi Ancient World myth)
13. Laura Branigan - Self Control (discussed before, but what was Friedkin thinking about?)

14. The Replacements - Bastards of Young (discussed before)
15. Siouxie and the Banshees - Peek A Boo (such a strange track and the video is suitably weird too)
16. Chemical Brothers - Wide Open
17. New Order - The Perfect Kiss (Jonathan Demme filming a 9m live performance in the studio)
18. Feist - I Feel It All (Patrick Daughters did all the vids on the Reminder; this choreographed fireworks routine beats out 1,2,3,4)
19. LL Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out (don't call it a comeback....)
20. The Cure - Close To Me (Tim Pope's claustrophobic video, one of many great videos he made for them)
21. Big Audio Dynamite - E=MC2 (kind of cheating, it's Don Letts pulling together clips from Nic Roeg films)
22. Kanye West - Can't Tell Me Nothing (Oldham/Galafianakis version) (the Hype Williams official video is pretty boring, but this unofficial video was hilarious)
23. Childish Gambino - Sober (NOT This is America, but Glover busts into dance routine when trying to chat up a girl in a diner, but he's so high)

24. Bat For Lashes - What's A Girl To Do? (discussed before, but the Donnie Darko vibes here really complement the song)
25. Outkast - BOB (NOT Hey Ya - I'm a frequent contrarian, and normally I HATE Dave Meyers videos, but this really is balls-out psychedelic)

As I recall, Cirrus got a few votes, and it was only reluctantly left off my list. (I ended up with forty something videos to sort through, nearly half of which were discoveries from this thread.) Thanks for bringing it to our attention. Great video!

Yeah, like a third of my list was new discoveries, and there were a dozen more that ended up being tough cuts

A couple more, because voting may have ended but the beat goes on! :

I had forgotten about Karma Police, the Radiohead video directed by Jonathan Glazer, until seeing it on the orphans list above (I also really love the fan made video that syncs up Radiohead's Lucky to images from Lars von Trier's Element of Crime that has sadly disappeared from YouTube for the moment), and find it pairs up nicely with the spotlight following the path of darkened roads video for The Road by UNKLE.
