That begs a good question- is it possible that Criterion will no longer be replacing the bronzing discs from the original printed release once this drops? This might be a good time for those with the OOP
Pierrot le Fou to get replacement discs proactively, just in case this new transfer
does suck and becomes the only option...
I'm afraid so... But if "
Pierrot Le Fou" was part of the replacement series; like "
Walkabout"; they did a second pressing (thus a new pressing - as written on the top of the disk) not replacing with old stock (like French QOL used to do).
But we can assume that if the transfer is different (and it will if they change the cover, the menus will change) the disk will be different. Thus they can't continue to press an OOP and "outdated" transfer.
Thus, it's a bit like the same case like J.Tati "
Playtime". Had first Blu-Ray Playtime be affected by rot or BR bronzing, would Criterion change the OOP "old" Playtime ? I guess they will agree as long as they have limited stock. The stock of the OOP BR "Pierrot Le Fou" is probably limited.
In a way, the first BR "Pierrot Le Fou" will remain a "most wanted" "very desirable" thing on ebay. Since it will be clearly an alternate transfer (hopefully the new transfer will outdate the first BR Criterion "Pierrot Le Fou", but I have my fears).
I sincerely hope that they won't mess up with the color gradings ("Playtime" was intend to have a metallic look and I've always been disoriented with the greenish palette of "Trafic" vs the Criterion DVD)
"Pierrot Le Fou" is like a fireworks for color. "Playtime" new transfer had more HD details but the flipside of the coin was a color palette for which I was not at ease.
The first Criterion Blu-Ray "Pierrot Le Fou" as some "pop art" color...
Just wait for the captures of Agnès Varda "Le Bonheur" and you will cry. Apparently it will be the same than the UK Artificial Eye transfer. Something really different to the warm color of the DVD Criterion release (it's not that annoying with "Sans Toit Ni Loi" fortunately.
