This is definitely one of those key 'young naive figure trying to be a hard hearted businessman comes to destroy local business and ends up having his heart touched by the down home charms of the people who live there' film. Something like the Australian film Spotswood, or Renée Zellweger's New In Town feel in that tradition (plus Doc Hollywood!)
Let’s not forget Imamura’s Profound Desires of the Gods.

As for this film, while Housekeeping hits me much harder I quite enjoyed this tour of local flavour Scottish and American. While I’ve seen Ealing thrown out a lot as with Zedz above this reminded me more in tone and purpose as something much closer to Michael Powell’s Scottish films.

A lovely film. To me, it feels very much akin to I Know Where I'm Going!. Both films even have the
distinctive visual of a phone box in an odd location.
