I remember that sense of inconsistency with Brooks' work even as a child. Spaceballs is burned into my mind as a much discussed film in the schoolyard as a kid, which has some okay laughs, but recall by the end being quite checked out at age 7-8. When I watched it as a teen, I felt more or less the same.
As a child, I thought that History of the World, Pt. 1 was virtually flawless. I haven't seen it in many years, but parts of still sporadically appear in my mind, like the human chess board ("Everyone jump queen!").
Those two were the ones that most of my classmates talked about in school, and they seem to be apiece with any throw-everything-at-the-wall-and-see-what-sticks comedies of the '80s and '90s. Complete messes, there's a lot to like and not like about them. I'm tempted to say they feel like a collection of gags and sketches than fully-realized movies. History of the World probably has the most memorable jokes because it packs in so many bits in general, and Spaceballs has Brooks's greatest moment ever IMO.

The Seduction of Joe Tynan (1979)
• NEW Audio Commentary by Entertainment Journalist and Author Bryan Reesman
• 2 Radio Spots
• Theatrical Trailer
• Optional English Subtitles

Color 107 Minutes 1.85:1 Rated R
Alan Alda (The Mephisto Waltz) and Barbara Harris (A Thousand Clowns) co-star with acting royalty Meryl Streep (Silkwood) in The Seduction of Joe Tynan, the critically acclaimed hit about a senator with presidential ambitions and the price he has to pay. Alda, who also wrote the screenplay, is Joe Tynan, a decent, hardworking senator whose job in Washington keeps him away from his wife (Harris) and family. Matters become even more complicated when he begins to develop a relationship with a civil rights activist (Streep) in this political drama where power and principles, like love and marriage, collide. Directed by Jerry Schatzberg (Puzzle of a Downfall Child, The Panic in Needle Park) and produced by Martin Bregman (Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon), this richly nuanced, finely acted film also features Rip Torn (Time Limit), Melvyn Douglas (Angel), Charles Kimbrough (TV’s Murphy Brown) and Carrie Nye (The Group).

Really fine, underrated look at the American political system that's anchored by an unbelievably great performance by Barbara Harris. Schatzberg participated in their Puzzle of a Downfall Child release. I'm curious about why he's not on this.

The Four Seasons (1981)

• 3 Radio Spots
• Theatrical Trailer
• Optional English Subtitles

Color 108 Minutes 1.85:1 Rated PG
Through winter, spring, summer and fall... somehow these friends have survived them all! In this heartfelt comedy about three 40-something couples who frequently vacation together, life’s ups and downs take their toll. Their perfect dynamic is forever changed when one friend leaves his wife for a much younger woman. The lines are drawn when they are forced to take sides regarding the new couple, reminding us that friendship is like the seasons—forever changing. Written, directed and starring Alan Alda (Sweet Liberty, Betsy’s Wedding), this hit romantic comedy also stars Carol Burnett (The Front Page), Len Cariou (A Little Night Music), Sandy Dennis (The Indian Runner), Rita Moreno (The Night of the Following Day), Jack Weston (Fuzz) and Bess Armstrong (High Road to China).

Nightkill (1980) (BD) (DVD previously OOP)
The Rain Killer (1990) (DVD) (BD previously OOP) (Scorpion)

Worth noting that several DVD only titles were removed from the "While Supplies Last" sale, but are still available for purchase. I suspect this simply means that at the rate these DVD versions were selling they don't expect them to sell out all that quickly.

Hopefully Kino puts as much effort into correcting the colour timing for A Fistful of Dollars as they did for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

Well, this one really does seem kind of pointless. The film has some incredibly lengthy optical sequences and generally a quite soft look, so I doubt the resolution bump is going to add much at all. They also indicate it was colour corrected in 2020, so that aspect will likely be the same as the Criterion too. And no HDR.

So that leaves a potential superior compression job (the Criterion was fairly poor in this regard) and I guess they could source the laserdisc mono, which Moshrom identified as being superior to what Criterion used.

Kino is not going to put in the effort to source the laserdisc mono. I am thinking that a bunch of Kino's MGM titles are likely going to be SDR, which leaves them pretty pointless.

Ah I wasn't aware that they did that for that disc. Maybe they will, but they have tended to be pretty lazy with regards to audio (like, if I'm remembering the correctly, the audio on their Bitter Moon blu-ray being in the wrong pitch and refusing to acknowledge and fix the issue.)

From what I recall, only three of their MGM UHDs are going to be SDR (that does not include the two Dollars films).

To be fair, most labels can be pretty lazy with audio to begin with. I know that labels like Eureka and Criterion have had releases with incorrect pitches (MoC's mono track on "A Man For All Seasons" and Criterion's "Sweet Smell of Success" are a few semitones too low).

So about a fourth of their unannounced slate (I think they now have about 10 more MGM UHDs to announce.)

Sure, everyone makes mistakes. Getting Kino to admit to their errors (even if they will/can not fix them) is like getting punched in the face. They are so goddamn defensive/obnoxious that it is off putting. Frankly, their business model of licensing dozens and dozens of titles and then shoveling them out as fast as possible doesn't help.

The only reason KL used the laserdisc audio for GBU is because of the superfans who were helping them with the 4K release.

Yeah, their defensiveness about mistakes is very cumbersome. I'm surprised that they owned up to the Alfredo Garcia situation after claiming it was the Arrow remaster and then tried to backpedal by claiming a QC person pointed out that it was the older master months before release.

The irony being the same superfans that their old label representative mocked around the release of their 2017 Blu.

Wow, is Arrow's Blu-ray also a few semitones too low?

I know Moshrom had a blog post somewhere that showed how much more noise reduction/filtering Criterion used on their Blu-ray than Arrow's (i.e. Arrow's sounds much better), but I didn't recall any differences in pitch.

Same track (I own both the Criterion and Arrow and can confirm). He made a video showcasing the differences:

Other than the 4K resolution bump, current SDR UHD releases all possess a greater bit depth (10 bit as opposed to 8). Theoretically it should help resolve some banding issues.
