Definitely purchasing, but I wish it had more of Jeunet and Caro’s shorts. I really wonder what led to the end of their partnership

Nice to see it confirmed. I hadn't bought the Studio Canal 4K yet so I might get Severin's instead. It has the film on a BD too which I think the UK version did not.

***SEVERIN BLACK FRIDAY TITLE REVEAL #1***

Studio Canal 4K disc had some very noticeable DNR/compression issues. I wonder if Severin will be able to improve on it. I will be buying it regardless, for the extras.

Me Me Lai of course later turns up in Lars von Trier's debut feature The Element of Crime - her last on screen role - as the enigmatic femme fatale figure who gets "fucked back to the stone age" by Michael Elphick, in a line presumably alluding back to her cannibal films. She doesn't fare that much better in Eaten Alive!

Me Me Lai appears in a few key cannibal films, including the best movie of the genre - the intense survival movie Last Cannibal World aka Jungle Holocaust. There’s a movie I wouldn’t find seeing in UHD! And Me Me Lai stands out (literally) as a kindly, silicone pumped cannibal tribeswoman.

Eaten Alive! I would place squarely somewhere in the middle of my rankings of this sub genre, it’s really more of an Ivan Rassimov/hippy-cult leader-in-a-jungle movie with the cannibal elements more of a secondary threat. Not a great film on its own but quite unique within the genre.

aka Prsioner of the Cannibal God, and one of the original "Video Nasties" in the UK (later retitled in its edited version as "Moutain of the Cannibal God"). I really am glad at the sterling work that Severin have been doing over many years now in getting a lot of the lesser-celebrated Video Nasty titles onto disc.

I remember watching a B&W German-dubbed Russian voice-over-ed nth-generation VHS copy of "Slave..." back in early '80-s. I have mixed feeling observing how much attention and care movies like that (being at the most of questionable merits) are getting nowadays

HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD
THE NORTH AMERICAN UHD PREMIERE

What began as the epic global zombie apocalypse screenplay VIRUS by Claudio Fragasso & Rossella Drudi (SHOCKING DARK, ROBOWAR) became – via the inimitable vision of director Bruno Mattei (CRUEL JAWS, RATS: NIGHT OF TERROR) and a fraction of the original budget – this “gloriously ludicrous” (Confluence of Cult), “compulsively watchable” (Classic-Horror), “infamous zombie-chomp spectacular” (Braineater), now in UHD for the first time in America: When a top-secret biomedical project accidentally unleashes a catastrophic plague, a four-man commando team and a female reporter head into the jungle for an “absolutely insane” (B&S About Movies) experience in gratuitous nudity, grisly stock footage and ravenous hordes of flesh-eating zombies. Margie Newton (THE ADVENTURES OF HERCULES), Franco Garofalo (THE OTHER HELL) and a soundtrack ‘borrowed’ from Goblin star in “a must for all fans of Italian exploitation” (Cinezilla) – also known as VIRUS, NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIES and ZOMBIE CREEPING FLESH – now scanned in 4K from the original camera negative.

Hell of the Living Dead is awful, but it’s been close to 20 years since I saw it so I need to revisit. But I remember the extensive use of stock footage of famine and disease stricken Africans etc to imply zombie hordes were spreading around the world. Hilariously outrageously un-pc, as only the Italians could be in those days.

Slave of the Cannibal God is one of the better cannibal movies. Quite a lot of the animal kills and tribal cave scenes from this film are reused in later movies like Eaten Alive. It’s more of a jungle adventure movie with a hidden battle over some mining rights. Lots of perilous obstacles to overcome before they can reach their destination. But yes, a lot of animal deaths in this one sadly (although mostly stock footage of things like a snake eating a monkey etc). The Code Red Blu was decent but obviously very basic and lacked subs if I remember correctly. Good to see the Severin includes the Italian dub as well.

I kind of love Hell of the Living Dead. It is bad if approached as a serious zombie film but really fun in how it never stops throwing something completely bizarre at the viewer with almost every new scene, as if it is the ultimate megamix of three or four different types of Italian horror films being brutally mashed together with no consideration as to narrative consistency or tonal whiplash that results! What other film would have a mercenary dress up in a tutu with a cane and then proceed do a tap dance number before getting eaten by zombies? I also like that it starts rather generically boring with its opening hostage siege to the 'borrowed' Goblin score from Dawn of the Dead (and mostly re-doing the apartment siege set piece opening of the Romero film), and then gets to its weird mondo section which feels to be entirely there in order to get the heroine to go topless and intercut her with tribal dancing stock footage; then shifts into its Zombie Flesh-Eaters section of exploring the deserted village with bickering zombie fodder supporting characters; before we get into the final act and its wonderful relentlessly bleak spiral into nihilism as the dwindling band of mercenaries gets to wander around the industrial factory at the epicentre of the outbreak to listen to a few videogame-anticipating lore-dumping audio logs scattered around the environment before meeting their own dooms. Plus the inevitable "the cycle never ends, and now has come to the Big City too!!" ending.

LAST CANNIBAL WORLD
THE NORTH AMERICAN UHD PREMIERE
For the first film in his unofficial ‘Cannibal Trilogy,’ director Ruggero Deodato (CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, HOUSE ON THE EDGE OF THE PARK) delivered a depraved adventure that’s been called “well made and meaty” (Malevolent Dark), “gripping and shocking” (Monster Hunter) and “easily the most savage of the entire genre” (Fantastic Movie Musings), presented in UHD for the first time ever: In a jungle hell that has no pity for man, the survivors of a plane crash are hunted by a primitive tribe with a taste for torment. Massimo Foschi (NINE GUESTS FOR A CRIME), Ivan Rassimov (SACRIFICE!) and Me Me Lai (EATEN ALIVE) star in this ultra-graphic gut-muncher – also known as JUNGLE HOLOCAUST, THE LAST SURVIVOR and CANNIBAL – “that raised the bar in terms of extreme gore and nastiness” (The Worldwide Celluloid Massacre), now scanned in 4K from the original negative with over 2½ hours of Special Features.
