Is A24 an American company I've never heard of? Or is it based elsewhere?

They’re a film distribution company who distributed stuff like Get Out, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Uncut Gems, Moonlight, and Hereditary. And recently they started re-releasing ‘90s independent projects like Pi and Stop Making Sense.

They distribute an awful lot of zeitgeisty films and TV series. Occasionally they also release them on home video, though their store seems more focused on film ephemera

Thanks swo and TechnicolorAcid -- It doesn't look like I've seen anything they handle EXCEPT Stop Making Sense.

A24 are one of the few contemporary film distributors to have a genuine "brand." Under-30s will say stuff like "I like A24 films," which basically means, edgy and with imagery that's striking and looks good on Instagram. That includes good stuff and bad stuff and plenty in between.

A24 will be releasing PI on March 14.

From Twitter/X: "Bringing Darren Aronofsky’s PI back (again) with a special edition Blu-ray & 4K plus a new and expanded edition of Aronofsky’s The Guerrilla Diaries. Available 3.14 in the A24 Shop."

A24 signed distribution for Paolo Sorrentino's new film Parthenope prior to its screening at Cannes last month. I hope we get an eventual release. The director's last work, The Hand of God, was produced for Netflix and has yet to see the light of day on disc; still hoping for the Criterion treatment on that one.

They're really churning out these physical releases lately, which is cool even if some of the priorities are curious

They're really just holding off on Beau is Afraid. Shame.

Wouldn't be surprised to see it soon given their recent rate of physical media output. Plus I just bought the Eagle 4K, so

I don’t think this matters to many, if anyone at all, but the English subtitles of The Zone of Interest are burnt into the master on the upcoming A24 UHD. This was confirmed to me by A24. So in case anyone puts on Spanish subs or even the English SDH option, they’ll appear in the frame in addition to the regular burnt-in English subs.

SDH subs for Zone of Interest sort of defeats the intended experience of the film anyway, with the constant [distant screaming] and [distant fire roaring] popping up.

I would imagine if those are popping up incessantly and perhaps annoying the viewer, they’re a good analog for the soundtrack itself and thus pretty appropriate.

In Adventures in Subtitling news, whoever did the subs for Showing Up isn’t familiar with the band Quasi, though they got admirably close!

I was at B&N yesterday and noticed they had a whole stand devoted to A24's releases (though it might have just been on the side of it I briefly flipped through). Up to now I'd only seen Stop Making Sense before. No sign of a sale though.

I've also read/seen mention of some walmarts having a few of these in their racks.

B&N near me had a bunch of the script books. Very impressive production values on those!
