It was, but this restoration just wasn't done in this workflow and it would have cost way more time money and resources to go back upwards in the workflow and redo stuff in HDR.
Though I guess they might have been able to add a later HDR pass, like Sony did with some of their restorations.

One of the worst films I’ve ever seen. An OOP title that won’t be missed!

As it was included as an episode in Season 11 of Mystery Science Theater 3000, you are very much correct with your assertion!

Discussion of the 4KUHD GBU here, with valuable input from "murch13" in several posts; post 2962 (including a relevant link) seems a good place to start:

Shockingly, KLInsider skipped the angry dismissal round and went straight to announcing a replacement program. Maybe .com should go down for a few days more often?

Ha. Universal seems to have an HD master with the title cards, which no doubt made it easier to fix and replace the disc, so Kino didn't have to do the angry denial act. Which I think they do to try to deflect when they are not going to fix an issue.(see Spaceballs, Bitter Moon, etc.)

The Long Goodbye (1973) - New 4K Blu-ray scheduled
Marty (1955) - New 2K Blu-ray scheduled
Mr. Majestyk (1974) - New 2K Blu-ray scheduled
Planet of the Vampires (1965) - New 4K Blu-ray schedule

Oh goddamn it. It would have been nice for them to let us know this when they took their first release OOP.

Indeed. This is one of reasons Kino has less brand loyalty than some of the other boutique labels.

The extra annoying thing is that they have given a heads up for some of the titles they are planning on double dipping on (Marty and The Long Goodbye come to mind.)

The color corrections look way more convincing than whatever they tried to do for their previous BD release. I hope they fixed the extra features encodes, though.
I just received my copy of the new 4K UHD, and I agree. In fact this is the best-looking home video rendering of THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY that I have seen so far. I don't mind that it isn't HDR. For me, the improvements in resolution and how it handles grain, to say nothing of the more well-balanced color, make the upgrade worthwhile. I also appreciate the care they took to reconstruct the theatrical version.
