Re: 88 Films
Forbidden City Cop was okay, but the Chow I wish someone would release in a good edition is God of Cookery. Riki-Oh is a definite buy. The only thing I recall about Erotic Ghost Story is the wire-fu sex scene.

Is Erotic Ghost Story the one...
SpoilerShow
where that wire-fu sex scene culminates with the guy ejaculating everywhere and another gag later where a ghost cums in someones mouth?
Definetely agree on Chow. God of Cookery is one of the greatest comedies of the 90s. It was on Netflix with the Dragon Dynasty logo five or six years ago in what was an okay HD transfer. I would love for someone to do that or King of Comedy. I do believe From Beijing With Love has a proper HD release in Hong Kong as wel.

Cool. I thought Cyborg was an April Fool’s trick. Wasn’t the Shout Factory from a 4k restoration but not significantly better than the off the shelf MGM release that had come previously?
Glad about In Hell, as the German Blu ray looked like it was from an SD source & a decent version is needed.

Re: 88 Films
Forbidden City Cop is probably one of the more sought-after of Chow's films that 88 can access through their Fortune Star relationship. Most of his biggest '90s films (including God of Cookery, King of Comedy, and From Beijing with Love) are with Golden Harvest and I'm not sure they're working with any international labels except Nova Media in Korea. Fortune Star mostly has earlier work like the two Royal Tramps, King of Beggars, Final Justice, When Fortune Smiles, etc. Celestial has a few of Chow's films—The Mad Monk, Justice, My Foot!, Look Out, Officer!, Love on Delivery, and Out of the Dark—so those could be possibilities as well. But I don't think 88 has ever licensed anything from Golden Harvest.

Re: 88 Films
Ah, I see, I hadn't paid much attention to where they were getting their films from. Netflix had God of Cookery for a little while, but didn't keep it around, though they still have the Celestial titles you mention. Hopefully we get a decent version at some point. The Fanciful Norwegian wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 5:33 pm

That I don't recall, though I know there were at least two sequels, so I'm sure those have similar content. And yeah, my impression of the film was much the same as yours. The Elegant Dandy Fop wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 11:40 am

88 Films posted that they think they’re releasing a 2k restoration of Cyborg, on their Facebook page.Adam X wrote: ↑Wed Apr 28, 2021 6:01 pmI forgot about that. So maybe this is a different restoration.

Worth mentioning that Robotrix was announced for Blu-ray. One of the sleaziest, most outlandish of Category III films. A total hoot and incredibly NSFW with a few moments that made me gasp.

Director Lam Ngai Kai (Erotic Ghost Story/Saga of the Phoenix), brings us a tour de force story of incarceration and injustice laced with super charged action sequences and mounting prison-based tension. Set in the year 2001, where all correctional facilities have been privatised, martial artist Ricky finds himself victim to the corrupt system when he is found guilty of the manslaughter of an infamous crime boss. Once in jail he must fight for his own survival when he is thrown into a world of enemies vying for his blood.
Based on the Japanese Manga by Masahiko Takajo and Tetsuya Saruwatari, this cinematic adaptation also follows closely in the footsteps of a host brutal prison dramas like Brute Force (1947), Escape from Alcatraz (1979) and Scum (1979) but of course it’s all delivered with a distinctive Hong Kong style powerhouse punch

From the heady days of early 90s Hong Kong exploitation cinema comes Robotrix, a hi-octane, fast, and furious science fiction romp, packed with glorious action sequences and bonkers plotlines. When evil inventor Ryuichi Sakamoto (Chung Lin) transfers his mind into that of a powerful cyborg, he becomes a murderer and rapist. But when one of his victims, Police officer Selena Lin (Chikako Aoyama) becomes super robot Eve-27, she teams up with android sidekick Ann (Amy Yip) and together they seek to bring the criminally insane scientist to justice.
Like a crazy mix of The Terminator (1981), The Power Rangers, and of course, Robocop (1987) Robotrix, combines the mad doctor movie with extreme martial arts to deliver a sexy, seductive, bionic tale of lust and violence given a uniquely Asian futuristic spin.

In Hell & especially Cyborg look very good in terms of PQ. Really enjoying their JCVD releases.
Anyone picked up Hell Night? How does that fare regarding video transfer?

Fingers crossed it’s something other than The House of the Laughing Windows or Zeder. Would love to see more of Avati’s work.88 Films (caption from a posted photo) wrote:The great Pupi Avati being interviewed by Eugenio Ercolani for an upcoming Blu-ray release.

I imagine it’ll be a fresh scan or Zeder or la Casa… given 88 Films already did an excellent release of the Avati produced, Lamberto Bava directed classic Macabro.

Re: 88 Films
OK, on top of all other evidence, Tsui Hark must be some kind of genius because somehow Knock Off, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Rob Schneider, ends up being one of the coolest movies of the '90s. It looks like the 88 Films limited edition just recently sold out, so pick it up from a third-party seller before the price gets unreasonable

Glad to see another Knock-Off fan. It’s such a fun and stupid movie with a real intelligence brimming underneath.

I've been watching a lot of JCVD's Hong Kong films lately and it's easily the most fun of all of them

Agree Knock-Off is sorely under-appreciated. Easily my favorite Van Damme (and Schneider) film. An energetic blast from start to finish. Tsui Hark’s camera work is insane.
