. The negative was sent back to the lab in Mexico, who either lost it or outright destroyed it. We're not sure which.
Huge thanks for this info. I do not mind if that's the case that they're using the dvd transferI just want the damn film so bad.

Unfortunately, there's been no indication that Alucarda's any closer to coming to blu-ray from Mondo. What Ashirg meant, was their DVD used the negative as a source. They've shown no intention of using the master for a blu-ray, and I'm not sure there'd be any point in this. If you want the film so bad, you should just buy the DVD.

On the other hand, Queens of Evil is still coming, there was just a delay of some sort. I don't remember what.

It is a shame that there appears to be no Blu-ray forthcoming of Alucarda, mostly because it would be great to give the incessant screaming the chance to reach its full potential with a uncompressed Mono soundtrack!

I'm quite sure MM have no intention of using the master created then for a new BD release because it'd be a SD upscale with only a negligible technical added value, indeed.

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT!
Mondo Macabro is proud to present a double bill of two films by the legendary French cineaste Jean Louis van Belle, director of the astonishing SADIST WITH RED TEETH – an earlier Mondo release on DVD.

Remastered and available for the first time on home video anywhere in the world, this new “perverse double bill” contains the 1969 film PERVERTISSIMA and the 1970 production THE LADY KILLS (French title: Perverse et Docile). THE LADY KILLS tells the story of Françoise Frémont, who travels across Europe on an apparently random killing spree, bumping off a series of increasingly odious men. From Swinging London to the eternal city of Rome, she leave a trail of dead bodies and the question: why? A mystery film as only Jean Louis van Belle could make it, THE LADY KILLS is a blast from start to finish with an amazing soundtrack of gloriously groovy psych-rock.

PERVERTISSIMA is a bizarre – and possible unique - combination of mondo movie and mad scientist flick. A beautiful woman is hired by a scandal sheet editor to research and write a report on “Love in Paris”. Her quest takes her from a lesbian sauna to a secretive club of masked swingers, via stints as a street walker in a seedy Paris back alley and a strip-tease artist in an upmarket cabaret. Her final outing leads to the clinic of the dangerous Doctor Vilard, who aims to create sex robots out of human flesh, and mate them to create a race of superhumans to take over the world!

Described as: “Generous, inventive, mad, passionate, but above all human “, Jean Louis van Belle was for decades an almost mythic figure on the French film scene. He was never interviewed and always refused to have his photograph taken to preserve his anonymity. When he emerged from exile some ten years ago he was treated to a special show at the renowned Paris Cinematheque and then went on to astonish audiences via a whirlwind series of screenings of his unclassifiable and rarely seen films. Some of his story is told in the documentary So Who is Jean Louis van Belle?, featured on the disc alongside introductions to each film from writer Christophe Bier.

[...]The current plan is to have this double feature Blu-ray available for sale in late April or early May and to ship out soon after. However, the COVID-19 crisis is making this schedule extremely fluid at best. But we will be as transparent and forthcoming as possible with this information as soon as we have it.

And Gemini
Mondo Macabro is extremely excited to bring you the world Blu-ray debut of GEMINI, a blistering film from famed cult director Shinya Tsukamoto. Based on a story by “ero-guro” author Edogawa Ranpo, GEMINI is a tale of doppelgangers and revenge set, appropriately enough for our current troubles, during a plague outbreak. The film is full of hallucinogenic imagery and has an extraordinary, pounding soundtrack that you won’t be able to get out of your mind.

Absolutely wonderful film, should be a nice companion to the Third Window/Arrow releases.
Gemini was the first Tsukamoto film I saw theatrically, and immediately bought a ticket for the festival's second screening, just to wrap my brain around it. Wasn't the same experience second time round, but it was nevertheless still a stunning film, all the better for being able to see it more clearly now that I was able to see beyond its intensity.

More info about our upcoming Blu-ray of QUEENS OF EVIL!

As announced last month we are finally bringing our long awaited release of the Italian psychedelic horror classic QUEENS OF EVIL to BD for our Annual Halloween Sale in October. Here's a few more details on the limited edition -

It will be a two disc set featuring an exclusive bonus DVD with a massive 3 hour+ interview with Italian genre mainstay Ray Lovelock. This career spanning chat won't be available anywhere else, so of course it's a must-buy if you are a fan.

Also, since it's a double disc set we can't release it in our traditional LE red case. So we're giving it a slipcover! See the art attached for the design. The LE will also feature a booklet with a brand new essay on the film by Italian genre cinema guru Roberto Curti. The disc will also feature a brand new audio commentary on the film by film historians Samm Deighan and Kat Ellinger!

This set will be priced at $28 + shipping and will go on sale in late October, along with two more un-announced titles we are also working on right now. Get excited!

That... sounds more than worth the wait. I was already surprised big a couple years back that it was even announced, then my excitement it would be MM and now those specs... I can barely contain myself. I didn't even know I wanted a 3+ hour interview with Lovelock. Good god this is a real treat.

NEW TITLE ANNOUNCEMENT!

(Well, sort of new, as this was actually announced last week in our newsletter.)

Coming this fall/winter! Jorge Grau's 70s Eurogothic classic BLOOD CEREMONY! A.K.A. Ceremonia Sangrienta A.K.A. LEGEND OF BLOOD CASTLE!

Yes, finally this incredible classic of Spanish horror finally makes its legit disc debut in the US! A bold and bloody retelling of the Countess Bathory mythos from the director of LIVING DEAD AT MANCHESTER MORGUE, BLOOD CEREMONY has all the atmosphere and chills you'd expect from this era of Eurohorror.

As shown in the art above, this Blu-ray will come out first as a "red case" LE that will include an exclusive booklet written by Spanish cinema guru Ismael Fernández and a set of postcards of the Italian locandina, and will feature a reversible cover with stunning new art by Justin Coffee on the A side and classic ad art on the B.

The region free disc itself will feature an archival interview with Grau and two brand new audio commentaries - one by Troy Howarth and Nathaniel Thompson, and one by Robert Monell and Rodney Barnett. Full specs will be revealed as we get closer to publication.

And yes, we are working on making this the most complete presentation of the film that we can. More info on that TBA.

This limited edition Blu will go on sale along with QUEENS OF EVIL and a special secret LE title on Thursday, October 29th as part of our huge HALLOWEEN SALE! Keep tuned in here for more details on that as well!

Some good news regarding our release of Jorge Grau's Spanish Horror Classic BLOOD CEREMONY!

It's been our intention all along to include the full uncut international release of this film alongside the Spanish cut. However, initially the licensor was only able to supply the latter, putting us on the hunt for good film materials for the former.

It took almost TWO YEARS but FINALLY we were able to discover a fully uncut pristine film print of the international version! And we are happy to announce that indeed both cuts of this film will be available on our upcoming Blu-ray release! The full specs will be unveiled in the final days leading up to the pre-order going live.

Speaking of that pre-order, because this search took a bit longer than we expected, the production on this disc had to be delayed. Therefore it looks increasingly like the wait period between the pre-order and eventual delivery will be longer than we would like. We may even have to delay it till very early next year. Not something we are happy about, but there's not much we can do.

More info TBA when the pre-order for this one and for QUEENS OF EVIL and [REDACTED] go live on Thursday, October 29th at 9 AM Pacific/12 noon Eastern at mondomacabro.bigcartel.com.

Just found out recently that Jean-Louis van Belle rules! Sadist with Red Teeth easily top-10 MM titles ever and I loved Lady Kills too. Really fun director with enthusiastic approach.

Coming next year to Blu-ray! Two rare films by Spanish horror visionary Paul Naschy!

HOWL OF THE DEVIL is one of Naschy's last great films and also one of his craziest. He plays an insane failed actor who dresses up as various famous villains from films and history while he kidnaps and abuses unsuspecting ladies. HOWL is one of Naschy's most autobiographical films as well as one of his most bitter and cynical.

This will be the film's first official release anywhere in the world. Expect a 4K restoration from the recently discovered negative.

THE FRENCHMAN'S GARDEN is also criminally underseen and absolutely one of the great man's finest films. It's a sort of period set "true crime" film shot through with a healthy dose of the macabre. Troy Howarth, author of the book HUMAN BEASTS: THE FILMS OF PAUL NASCHY, says that it's "arguably Naschy's most impressive film up until this time" and we would have to agree.

This will be the first official release of the film in the US, from a recent, gorgeous 4K restoration.

We don't have firm dates for either release but expect both of them sometime in the first half of 2021 if all goes well.

For Christmas this year, we are giving you ...

ANOTHER SURPRISE BLU-RAY ANNOUNCEMENT!

This time it's an upgrade of one of our personal favorites here at MM HQ - The wild (and I mean WILD) Filipino exploitation masterpiece SILIP: DAUGHTERS OF EVE!

The copy on the back of our old DVD describes it thusly:

"In the tradition of Japanese “Pink” cinema comes this shocking, violent and sex filled movie that caused an outrage when it was screened at the Chicago Film Festival.

The film stars former Miss Philippines, the stunning Maria Isabel Lopez, in her most revealing role ever. It‘s an eye-opening example of raw and savage film making from one of its country’s most innovative directors.

Set in the beautiful and remote countryside of Ilongo, the story tells of three young women and their struggle to come to terms with their own sexuality against a background of religious repression and male brutality.

This film contains scenes of extreme violence and graphic sexuality that may disturb some viewers."

Yes, in fact, some viewers WILL be disturbed by this incredible and shocking film. You've been warned!

All the extras from our previous edition will be ported over along with a new batch created just for this release by the world's leading expert on Filipino genre and exploitation film, Andrew Leavold.

We don't have a pre-order date for this one set yet, but expect it sometime in the first half of 2021.

And please note this is the art for the DVD. The Blu-ray art will be somewhat different and will be revealed at a later time.

Merry Xmas Mondo Maniacs!
