BD 111, 116, 127, 216-217 Fuller at Fox: Five Films, 1951-1957

#1 Post by rapta » Wed Aug 07, 2019 1:47 pm

Limited edition box set coming in October featuring three MoC staples and two newbies...

BD 127 Fixed Bayonets!
BD 111 Pickup on South Street
BD 216 Hell and High Water
BD 217 House of Bamboo
BD 116 Forty Guns

PS: I imagine Hell and High Water and House of Bamboo will get separate editions once this set sells out, for those that don't want to double-dip.

This is the box set from a director already in the collection that I was referring to back when, FYI

In that case it seems they weren't successful in including China Gate in the end, but maybe they managed to secure A Fuller Life at least? We will no doubt find out tomorrow. Also I'd be surprised if they didn't secure the former as a separate release (I imagine Paramount weren't happy with them trying to add it to a Fox-centric box set).

A.M. said "All I can say is: it could mean that! Probably just on one film ..." and he does not mean Fixed Bayonets!

Is it too much to ask that they retitle this Fuller at Fox: Five Films from 'Fifty-one fru 'Fifty-seven

I do hope the 2 newbies are also getting individual releases.

I reckon they will, but at this rate maybe not 'til long after the box set goes OOP. Took over 18 months for the Buster Keaton set to be reissued...

That said they must be aware a lot of people will be double-dipping on these. They released Forty Guns, Pickup on South Street and Fixed Bayonets! within mere months of each other so anyone collecting MoC in 2015/2016 and a fan of Fuller was likely jumping on those as soon as they went on sale. This is almost as frustrating a double-dip as some of those StudioCanal box sets reissuing long-existing discs and adding only a couple of new ones (e.g. Godard, Melville).

I've said it elsewhere, but they might redeem the decision by a) updating the transfer for Forty Guns or b) including A Fuller Life in the extras. In an ideal world, we get both a) and b), and more in the form of an extensive booklet.

Thing is I still barely watched all my MoC boxsets that I bought day one, only to see most of them on sale later on. Do you reckon there's any chance I can wait on this?

SYNOPSIS
A towering figure of American cinema, Samuel Fuller was a master of the B-movie, a pulp maestro whose iconoclastic vision elevated the American genre film to new heights. After the major success of The Steel Helmet, Fuller was put under contract by Twentieth Century Fox after being impressed by Darryl F. Zanuck’s direct sales pitch (other studios offered Fuller money and tax shelters; Zanuck simply told him, “We make better movies.”).

Over a six-year period, Fuller would produce some of the best work of his career, (and therefore, some of the best films in American cinema), an uncompromising series of masterpieces spanning multiple genres (the Western, the War film, film noir, the Crime-Thriller) that would establish the director as a true auteur, whose influence continues to be felt today.

Collected here are five films from this fruitful period, all presented from stunning restorations. The impossibly tense Korean-War drama Fixed Bayonets! (1951); the outrageous and confrontational spy-thriller Pickup on South Street (1953); the Cold War submarine-actioner Hell and High Water (1954); the lushly photographed, cold-as-ice film noir House of Bamboo (1955); and the audacious Western with a feminist twist, Forty Guns (1957).

Eureka, I guess this is your punishment for asking all of us to double dip like this: more than half of your thread title is numbers.

That being said, I really want this

As nice as this set looks, I don't feel it's worth it for me since two of the three existing releases are already in 4k. They should have just done a two film bundle for Hell & High Water and House of Bamboo (see their John Woo release) at a lower price.

PS.: Eureka confirmed on Facebook the 4k Forty Guns won't get reissued separately.

Oh FFS, not only 3 titles are already available but they're upgrading one of those and it wont be re-released individually ? That's not very sweet for first-hour fans of those and of the label.

If it's potentially any consolation for those who haven't seen Hell and High Water and assume they're missing out, it's a really conventional film by his standards and I thought it was something of a dud and not a keeper. Fuller was working from an already existing script and he injects a few doses of war realism in a couple of places, but overall it's fairly feeble and not comparable to the preceding films, narratively or visually. House of Bamboo was released on Twilight Time and is available on amazon but not cheap.

They did say on Facebook that the two new titles would get separate releases "if the box sells fast enough" (but later deleted this comment?)
