They might throw in a nod to the Olympics or Valentine’s Day, but I’m surprised how many guesses are omitting a film centered around people of color during Black History Month

I included Atlantics and Missisippi Marsala which neither one is a reach at this point

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
I'm not sure Criterion pays attention to those things, Blus. Did they have a gay-themed film in June, ever? They traditionally observe October and Halloween with a horror or sci-fi thriller film, but I suspect that someone long ago probably connected the horror films to October, and that's stayed a tradition. They didn't release Holiday till after the holidays, and they had no major political film during a huge election year in 2020. I just don't think those things are in the DNA of Criterion's planning. Maybe next year we'll get a film noir for Noirvember, as they've styled the current Channel series, but I kind of doubt it.They might throw in a nod to the Olympics or Valentine’s Day, but I’m surprised how many guesses are omitting a film centered around people of color during Black History Month
However, given January's releases--no new film earlier than 1993, and two documentaries, both from 2020!--I think there's a good possibility of a pendulum effect. I'm drawing on patterns and not specific titles, except for my usual hope for Written on the Wind, but otherwise I'd look for:
All feature films, no docs
A classic Hollywood studio film, hopefully from the 1930s, although there's a chance it could be a silent
A great samurai film (but I'm not holding my breath) or a film by an Asian director (I know this seems contrarian, but there have been several films by Black directors in the last six months, including three films by Black women. They outnumber the one Johnnie To film and the OUATIC box, so it seems to me an Asian director is likelier, given Criterion's current sensitivity to balancing race and gender).
There'll probably be a couple others, and probably in color. A fully restored Western would be nice....

Just wanna point out that, yes, Criterion has included a Queer title in their June line-up every year since at least 2018 ('18 - Female Trouble, '19 - Hedwig and the Angry Inch, '20 - Portrait of a Lady on Fire, '21 - Pariah & The Signifyin' Works of Marlon Riggs). Doesn't mean that they'll start specifically placing titles with Black directors/subjects/etc. in February, but there is a slight precedent.Bressonaire wrote: ↑Sat Nov 13, 2021 3:59 pmI'm not sure Criterion pays attention to those things, Blus. Thanks so much, guyetgenevieve. I didn't do enough research on that comment, obviously. It's worth remembering.Just wanna point out that, yes, Criterion has included a Queer title in their June line-up every year since at least 2018 ('18 - Female Trouble, '19 - Hedwig and the Angry Inch, '20 - Portrait of a Lady on Fire, '21 - Pariah & The Signifyin' Works of Marlon Riggs). I just bought the last in-stock copy of Indicator’s Twentieth Century at Diabolik DVD, so you can thank me when Criterion announces their release tomorrow.

Riefenstahl is a supremely talented filmmaker but I don’t think Olympia will ever be released by Becker as a stand-alone due to Riefenstahl’s glorification of body that too easily parallels the concurrent National Socialist glorification of ‘ideal' Aryan genetics.
They’d be more inclined to release Syberberg’s Hitler. Which would be a fantastic release.

which is silly given that Sweet Sweetback just got the lavish boxset treatment and endless social media promotion.Walter Kurtz wrote: ↑Sun Nov 14, 2021 2:55 pmRiefenstahl is a supremely talented filmmaker but I don’t think Olympia will ever be released by Becker as a stand-alone due to Riefenstahl’s glorification of body that too easily parallels the concurrent National Socialist glorification of ‘ideal' Aryan genetics.

this isn't a direct comparison between the two, but not releasing one problematic thing yet releasing another is silly in these eyes.

What may be more silly is anyone in 2020's America even remotely conflating the releasabilty of a film espousing a modicum of black power by a liberal distribution company... to their inclination to release a film espousing Aryan ideals (however veiled) by a Nazi filmmaker.ryannichols7 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 14, 2021 8:06 pmthis isn't a direct comparison between the two, but not releasing one problematic thing yet releasing another is silly in these eyes.

I suspect he was referring to the placing a minor in a sexual situation controversy rather than anything to do with black power.

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
that's precisely what I was getting at. but considering the Wikipedia article of the movie doesn't even mention this, that's basically all but swept under the rug at this point....
anyway, to stay on topic:
can this be The Searchers UHD please? I haven't seen anyone mention this possibility yet on this forum. this was one of the first archival blurays WB put out but as we know, they have little interest in their back catalog. a CC UHD would be most welcome, especially if they manage to bring in Joseph McBride and Tag Gallagher to talk about Ford's best known movie. think it would more than justify CC doing it over WB, and it's a title that is obviously crying out for the 4K treatmentBressonaire wrote: ↑Sat Nov 13, 2021 3:59 pmThere'll probably be a couple others, and probably in color. Winchester '73 has been rumored for quite some time. Bressonaire certainly could've had this mind.. wink, wink
