...and that drove me to go look it up here and to my surprise I see it's missing! I swore I covered this one (and the DVD) but can't find it in any backups, so I must have missed it. Running a query I see a few other titles missing as well, much to my annoyance (though it's most certainly my fault). I'll have to correct that over the next bit.yoloswegmaster wrote:That's ok Chris, it gives you more time to review Ugetsu.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol. 7
To my surprise I received Mulholland Dr. and Once Upon a Time in China. China's is like the Bruce Lee set with the discs overlapping in holders.
Mulholland is basically the same as the original Blu-ray but has two separate holders for the discs. Also, the UHD sticker has that reflective, foil whatever-you-call-it sheen (the name escapes me everytime).
Edit: and I'll post pictures later on today

apparently B&N is getting out Mulholland and OUATIC pretty quickly, lots of Reddit users reporting getting both early, and some reporting being able to pick up Mulholland in store (a huge surprise). curious how quickly they'll be getting Kane to youcdnchris wrote: ↑Sat Nov 13, 2021 1:21 pmTo my surprise I received Mulholland Dr. and Once Upon a Time in China. also...count me amongst those who would read catalog reviews of whichever reviews you've missed (the BRD trilogy, if you want me to add another suggestion to one that's not there)

La strada would have been so much better if they just used the disc art for the cover. Give it a Jules and Jim sort of look.
The other two look good at least.

So the slip case goes on vertically. Is that a first?

The original Blu-ray releases, before Criterion created a Blu-ray plastic case, were all like that.

Much prefer the original Written on the Wind cover. Something about the font on this one feels a little cheap, and even if the painting is nice I don’t find it as interesting compositionally.

Wind is nice, but I prefer the dvd artwork as well.
Of course, you could package a Blu-ray of Written on the Wind in a brown lunch bag and I’d buy it.

It seems like it's loosely inspired by this French poster for Tarnished Angels, which I love, so maybe that's why I like it so much:

These are all fine. Another boring black and white cover for a black and white Hollywood film, though

I like the Miller's Crossing one, reminds me of the Inside Llewyn Davis cover

All of these are good except for Love Affair, but even then, it isn't terrible. Miller's Crossing will pair nicely with Inside Llewyn Davis.

I like the still for Love Affair but the font choice is disappointing. At least they didn't give it the cartoon treatment.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol. 7
My takes:
WRITTEN ON THE WIND - I love how melodramatic this cover is; it's certainly an improvement over the old one. I especially love the way everyone is staring daggers at one another.
MILLER'S CROSSING - A beautiful cover. Kinda reminds me of a National Parks poster (just replace the gangster and the guy pleading for his life with a couple of deer and you'll see it)
LOVE AFFAIR - This one is fine, but it's too damm simple. It feels more like a first draft, and the use of a image instead of an illustration or painting is a huge missed opportunity. Like the lettering though.
BOAT PEOPLE - This one is suitably grim (I haven't seen the film, but I'm guessing its not a musical), but I still find it lacking. Everything on this cover could have been improved, from the image to the lettering. It works, but it could have been better.

Considering these, I prefer the final product.

I rather like this second one. The red contrasted with the black and white makes the whole design pop. Plus the font choice of the title more easily scans as "romantic"theflicker wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 5:18 pmAlternate takes on Love Affair from the designer:

Interesting that some people have received and reviewed Mulholland Drive and Uncut Gems 4K early, with Citizen Kane even receiving a early review from Robert A. Harris, but there are still no early copies or reviews for Menace II Society.
Chris, since you received 3 of this months titles early, do you think that you will get the remaining titles soon?

I think so, though can't say for sure. I actually wasn't expecting to get the others when I did due to some stuff that came up (I was expecting to receive them all very late), but if they come early I assume it will be anytime between today and Saturday.yoloswegmaster wrote:Interesting that some people have received and reviewed Mulholland Drive and Uncut Gems 4K early, with Citizen Kane even receiving a early review from Robert A.
