IMPORTANT NOTE
Voting starts once the last release of December is unleashed on the populace, December 15th. You may post in this thread before that, but any lists posted early will, as always, be deleted and your message replaced with Gossip Girl GIFs.

Please either post your votes in this thread or PM me, domino harvey. You may or may not vote in most categories, but you must provide a ranked Top Five to be counted at all. No ties will be counted in any category, so make the hard decision if you want your vote to matter.

NO VOTING UNTIL DECEMBER 15 2020
VOTING CLOSES JANUARY 15 2021

Only significant change this year: Because of the unusual number of box sets this year, I've split them into two categories to separate the ridiculously big ones without spine numbers from the smaller sets, to give the more conventional sets a chance. Will decide on a year by year basis if this continues going forward

to me this has been a really strong year across the board for Criterion, all the more impressive with Covid going on around the world. and while I know they're not eligible, I really enjoyed the commentaries for the pennebaker films, the commentary that was made available for Company on the Channel (is that a first), and the commentary from somewhen for Town Bloody Hall.

Is there any chance of ad hoc category ala "Best Discovery" for something that only came out on the criterion channel in 2020? For me this year that'd be something like "in a year of 13 moons" It'd be a way to acknowledge the channel with a category without overwhelming the awards... on the other hand while typing that I realized we'd need a list of what's premiered exclusive to the channel in 2020, and that I do not have...

There will only be a non-physical media category when someone pries the responsibility for compiling these lists from my cold, dead, beautiful hands

By the same token, Me and You and Everyone We Know should get its own "Best Bonus Film" category

Just to be clear, the "Best Packaging - Boxed Set" category this year is solely between Varda and Fellini, right? I think that makes sense, as a way to tell Criterion which packaging schemes we like best for these giant career retrospectives, but the wording as it stands could also prompt some votes for Bruce Lee, Zeman, or WCP

You had suggested the prior to me, but upon consideration I decided it made more sense to let all the boxes compete

BEST "BONUS" FILM: Flaming Memory
BEST BOOKLET: Essential Fellini

BEST REISSUE: The Cranes Are Flying
BEST UPGRADE: Pierrot Le Fou

BEST COVER: Portrait of a Lady on Fire
WORST COVER: Parasite, and it truly astounds me that Criterion would bestow a cover of such quality upon one of its most high-profile single releases ever
BEST PACKAGING - NON-BOXED SET INDIVIDUAL RELEASE: Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai

BEST DISCOVERY: Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project No. 3, for Soleil O (if I can actually vote for the latter, change it to that) EDIT: Soleil O it is!
MOST UNNECESSARY RELEASE: Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits
MOST FLAWED RELEASE: The Irishman, for apparently having an encode that is bested by the streaming version

BEST THREAD: The Howard Hawks List thread
MEMBER OF THE YEAR: feihong, for their voluminous and rewarding deep dives into certain films. Honorable mentions to domino harvey and therewillbeblus (past winners who well deserve the award), and to bottled spider for their hysterical evisceration of Blade Runner
RICHARD CRANIUM AWARD: A competitive year it was for this category, but of course the honor must go to our dearly departed nuclear take king nasir007, whose profoundly misplaced sincerity and total hostility towards every member of this forum will be "missed"

Never Cursed, that’s a good question re: Soleil O. I think in the past we let the vote for the whole Etaix box get counted in that category, but you’re welcome to vote for the individual film rather than the box, esp since they really have nothing in common

With Touki Bouki being the potential first of others, you gotta figure Soleil O is a no-brainer for an indiv release from those boxes— has Criterion released a more relevant film for this year this year?

I guess I could see why they would want to hold off on releasing it standalone if their intent was to move more boxes/Criterion Channel subscriptions, but I haven't really seen anyone talk about the film outside of this forum. It's certainly an easy thing to fast track now, in the wake of "current circumstances" and so forth (I am now imagining a Contagion release full of COVID extras being hastily stapled onto next month's schedule)
