What was wrong with Leave Her to Heaven? I have the TT and might get the Criterion eventually, so just wondering.

Could be that there was only one extra (though nixing the commentary from the Fox DVD/TT Blu was the right call)

BEST RELEASE Numbered in order from 1-5. Must vote for five titles to have your ballot counted. Boxed sets can also be voted on in this category
1. Three Fantastic Journeys by Karel Zeman
2. Christ Stopped At Eboli
3. Me and You and Everyone We Know
4. Town Bloody Hall
5. Girlfriends

Best “Normal” Boxed Set
Three Fantastic Journeys by Karel Zeman

Best “Big” Boxed Set
The Complete Films of Agnes Varda

Best Modern Film
The Irishman

Best Commentary
Tony Rayns on Parasite

Best “Bonus” Film
Holiday on Holiday

Best On Disc Non-commentary Extra
I think I’ll go for the video essay made from Cassavetes audio recordings on Husbands

Best Reissue
Taste of Cherry

Best Upgrade
The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum

Best Cover
Crash

Worst Cover
Nothing particularly stands out this year, so I might just go for Holiday

Best Packaging – Non-Boxed Set Individual Release
The Grand Budapest Hotel

Best Packaging – Boxed Set
Three Fantastic Journeys by Karel Zeman

Best Discovery
Girlfriends

Most Unnecessary Release
It unfortunately has to be the releases that have UHD editions elsewhere. Crash and Parasite at least have really compelling unique selling points, so it may have to be The Elephant Man just for that aspect.

Most Flawed Release
Nothing particularly stands out this year.

Best Thread
I always like the list thread project, so I’ll vote for the current Sci-Fi list

Member of the Year
I think I will go for feihong, because of the robust posts about the changes made to the new versions of the Wong Kar-Wai canon without being too overbearing about it!

It has been a very strange year of looking longingly at discs that I have not had much time to devote myself to, and generally getting limited to an episode a night of the Fist of the North Star TV series until collapsing into unconsciousness, visions of people bulging and exploding in blossoms of white light dancing in my head. I have finally gotten to the point where the ”You’re in Shock!” opening of the show has changed into Silent Survivor focusing on Ken versus Ken-Oh and their conflict over who is going to be the true North Star destined to be the “Ruler of the Century’s End” (which also fits well for the section of the show being about an endless trek through the wasteland)

Other than that, and fitting in with a year in which more arthouse fare seemed to be sidelined a bit for more genre (if not ‘psychotronic’) fare here is a rundown for my favourite non-Criterion releases of the year:

1. Solid Metal Nightmares: The Films of Shinya Tsukamoto (Arrow US)
2. Orphans (1998) and Secret Friends (Indicator)
3. Crash (UHD) (Arrow)
4. Cinema of Conflict: Four Films by Krzyztof Kieslowski
5. Hiroshima and Survivor Ballads: Three Films by Shohei Imamura (Arrow)
6. CzechMate – In Search of Jiři Menzel / How You Live Your Story: Selected Works by Kevin Jerome Watson / Goodbye, Dragon Inn (Second Run)
7. Burst City / Inferno of Torture (Arrow) – two films from two filmmakers I never thought would see a UK release
8. Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection (Severin) / He Came From The Swamp: The William Grefé Collection (Arrow)
9. Dawn of the Dead (1978) (Second Sight)
10. One Missed Call Trilogy (Arrow) / The Passion of Darkly Noon (Arrow) – films that I already loved getting the deluxe treatment, and it was a high point of my year to be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the two One Missed Call sequels
11. The Pillow Book (Indicator) / The Sheltering Sky (Arrow)
12. I caught up with Unearthed Films this year by picking up the 2019 release of A Record of Sweet Murder (from Koji Shiraishi, the director of BBFC-banned Grotesque and the more recent Sadako vs Kayako) and notorious Category III Hong Kong ‘true crime’ film The Untold Story (NSFW)
13. The Eureka! corner : Zu: Warriors From The Magic Mountain, Raining In The Mountain, Throw Down, Made In Hong Kong
14. Black Test Car & The Black Report (Arrow)
15. Pink Films Volume 1 to 4 / The Taste of Tea / Hanagatami (Third Window)
16. Phase IV (101 Films)
17. Synonyms (Kino)
18. The Painted Bird (Eureka)
19. Short Sharp Shocks (BFI’s Flipside series)
20. Friday The 13th: Deluxe Collection (Shout! Factory)
21. Impuse Films’ ongoing Nikkatsu Roman Porno DVD series continued with the grubby Woman In A Box 2, the astonishing Tokyo Caligula and the naughtier True Story of a Woman In Soapland: Tear!, along with the Blu-ray release of Love Hunter
22. Trailer Trauma V: 70s Action Attack! (Garagehouse Pictures) – already written up in the Garagehouse Pictures thread
23. Graveyard(s) of Honour / The Woman & Offspring (Arrow)

Best Release
1. Come and See
2. Me and You and Everyone We Know
3. Three Fantastic Journeys by Karel Zeman
4. The War of the Worlds
5. Amores Perros

Best "Normal" Box Set
Three Fantastic Journeys by Karel Zeman

Best "Big" Box Set
The Complete Films of Agnès Varda

Best Modern Film
The Grand Budapest Hotel (Runners-up: Parasite and Wildlife.)

Best Bonus Film
Flaming Memory

Best Booklet
Me and You and Everyone We Know

Best Cover
Husbands (Yes, it's just a still from the film, but I really like the image and how Criterion kept the cover consistent with their other Cassavetes releases. I might have voted for Toni, but since I haven't seen that film, I have no context. I intend to correct that soon, since I recently saw La Chienne and liked it.)

Worst Cover
The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum

Best Packaging (Non-Box Set)
The War of the Worlds

Best Packaging (Box Set)
Three Fantastic Journeys by Karel Zeman (Bonus vote: between the two "big" box sets, the Varda one has the better packaging.)

Most Flawed Release
Leave Her to Heaven

Richard Cranium Award
Wong Kar-wai (I swear that I was considering voting for him before swo made his post!)

I can only do a partial ballot this year, because there are still a bunch of releases in transit, but for what it's worth:

BEST RELEASE:
1. World Cinema Vol. 3 - Keep these coming, as they're by far the most interesting films Criterion is releasing.
2. Toni
3. Portrait of a Lady on Fire
4. Town Bloody Hall - The film itself is kind of a museum piece, but the total package of supporting extras made it an exceedingly well-curated museum piece.
5. Paris Is Burning

BEST REGULAR BOX SET:
World Cinema Vol. 3

BEST BIG BOX SET:
Varda (because she's a better filmmaker than Fellini, it's more complete, and it has such a personal touch).

BEST MODERN FILM:
Portrait of a Lady on Fire

BEST COMMENTARY:
I haven't actually received any of the eligible discs yet except for Il Bidone.

BEST REISSUE:
Taste of Cherry

BEST UPGRADE:
Symbiopsychotaxiplasm (Also the least expected upgrade ever, surely. I guess we have this year's bad press to thank for this.)

BEST COVER:
Toni

WORST COVER:
Dance Girl Dance (bad drawing, fugly design - completely awkward all round. And there was some steaming hot competition this year.)

BEST PACKAGING (BOX):
Karel Zeman (even though one of my pop-ups was pre-torn on arrival)

BEST DISCOVERY:
Downpour

RICHARD CRANIUM:
Nasir. Usually I'll go for a member who flamed out spectacularly and entertainingly, or was dramatically offensive or inane, but Nasir was the gold standard for simply a bad member of the community, rendering various threads unreadable and refusing to engage with other opinions. Turns out, it was because he just blocked anybody who disagreed with him. So I guess he's kind of an emblem of modern political discourse, but that's not what we need.

The WKW votes are pretty funny, but he'd have to be a member of the forum to be eligible for this rare honour.

BEST THREAD I want to say the L'art de la guerre politique thread, but Nasir’s contributions have clouded that chance, so I suppose the Howard Hawks List Project thread
MEMBER OF THE YEAR Brian C, for his often thankless, informative, level-headed contributions in the politics thread. This was a very challenging election year for many of us fearful of Trump, and Brian was always there to provide a realist, knowledgeable response to help de-escalate some of those fears, validate others, and prompt many of us (myself included) to consider another angle and get outside of our skewed scopes of vision. Plus, we absolutely needed him to remain this stable voice to restore balance as Nasir amped the rest of us up, and without his presence I believe this invaluable thread would have shifted tone toward a potentially permanent stain, and instead it has stayed alive and been a significant source of information and collective support during such a rough year.

Honorable mention: cdnchris for updating the site and adding all these new cool features, especially the comparison one, which I have to imagine is rather tedious and seemingly endless daunting work, but much appreciated!

RICHARD CRANIUM AWARD I guess it has to be Nasir007.. we really didn’t need another narcissistic personality to mimic Trump in the political thread and ravaging other threads on this forum during an election year, let alone a global pandemic. But I could easily name myself for not being the best version of my self on several occasions, something I’ve apologized to some for privately and now am publicly. I’ve also read some pretty shitty things here this year, from long-winded defenses on sexism, ableism, dedicated invalidation of socioeconomic barriers, and stigma against people struggling with addiction. It’s been a tough year for everyone (though some of this stuff was said well before the world descended into total chaos) and I hope 2021 is a year of less hostility and more civility, and that starts with me being a better contributor to practice what I preach. I love this forum, and I want it to remain a safe, pleasurable haven from the outside world’s boorishness. This is not meant to discount the fact that it predominantly has been such a space this year, and I'm immensely grateful for this community's support over the last twelve months, which has been more meaningful to me than many of you will ever know. Now let's usher in 2021's American Renaissance of pent-up art with open arms.

BEST RELEASE:
1. Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project No. 3
2. The Cameraman
3 The Gunfighter
4. Beau Travail
5. Bamboozled

(Runners-up: Holiday, Showboat, the Prince of Tides, An Unmarried Woman)

BEST “NORMAL” BOXED SET: Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project No. 3 - I’ve only watched a few of the films here so far, but regardless of my subjective opinion of them, the release itself is commendable. These sets are part of what continue to make Criterion worthwhile even though they release things like the World of Wong Kar Wai (my ire for which will now be contained until next year’s awards)

BEST “BIG” BOXED SET: Essential Fellini - I don’t jive with Varda quite as much as some here, and while I have yet to actually make my way through this set it still feels much more like an event than its competitor (the Cine-Tamaris Varda DVD set having extra little goodies doesn’t help)

BEST MODERN FILM: Portrait of a Lady on Fire - I can’t really say anything about it that hasn’t already been said, but it’s really a masterpiece and my favorite film to come out of 2019

BEST "BONUS" FILM: Spite Marriage - I’m not actually a huge fan of the film, but having it here on Blu-Ray is really important for silent Keaton completionists
BEST BOOKLET: The Grand Budapest Hotel
BEST ON-DISC NON-COMMENTARY EXTRA: J.E. Smyth’s video essay about editor Barbara McLean on The Gunfighter

BEST REISSUE: The Lady Eve
BEST UPGRADE: Six Moral Tales - I finally worked my way through all of Rohmer’s features this year, and this set was a lovely justification for doing so

BEST COVER: The Cameraman
WORST COVER: The Grand Budapest Hotel - great package, abysmal front cover (If I were Saiorse Ronan I’d sue.)
BEST PACKAGING - NON-BOXED SET INDIVIDUAL RELEASE: Roma
BEST PACKAGING - BOXED SET: Essential Fellini - I love the front cover illustration, the circus-program-esque booklets, the general shape and size. It really feels like an event release.

BEST DISCOVERY: The Gunfighter - how many more gems like this one are going to languish in the Fox vaults now that Disney has stopped licensing? And more importantly: what can be done about it?
MOST UNNECESSARY RELEASE: The Elephant Man - this is a stand-in for anything that has a 4K release elsewhere (Crash, Parasite, Roma (even if only streaming), etc.), but the encoding on this disc deserves a special dishonorable mention
MOST FLAWED RELEASE: Leave Her to Heaven - what happened here??? Imogen Sara Smith’s interview is good, and the booklet essay is fine, but this is a monumental film that Criterion totally dropped the ball on otherwise.

BEST THREAD: The World of Wong Kar-Wai - full of very important discussions about art, commerce, and posterity
MEMBER OF THE YEAR: Therewillbeblus - for being an excellent poster and just an all-round swell son of a gun
RICHARD CRANIUM AWARD: Nasir007 - well, duh
