I’ve seen 98/101 from the previous list. If I’d thought about it before now, I could have knocked off the last few titles!

Gotta say, the shorts, animations, and docs are arguably some of the most exciting things on the last list. I'd encourage everyone to seek them out, even if you don't have time to before the deadline

I watched a few orphans and one of the new films receiving two or more votes that were voteless last go round. Out of those, The Ghost and Mrs Muir is the lone addition to my top 50. I loved the beginning and end of the move but didn’t find the Miles Fairley fling particularly convincing. It almost seemed too obvious that he was a fake. Gene Tierney is incredible and it has an all-time great ending. Very moving.

As a graduate of the Ernie Pyle school of Journalism, I felt compelled to watch The Story of G.I. Joe. Burgess Meredith perfectly captured Pyle’s humble mannerisms. It’s an emotionally wrenching film and it’s interesting to note that Pyle, along with some of the extras, was killed a few months before the film was released (though after it was finished) and never actually saw it. I thought about adding it but as is, it sits just outside my top 50. But hey, Dwight Eisenhower said it was the best war movie ever made!

Yeah, you could've knocked them out in a coma.

Didn't realize the 2012 list went up to 101, so I've seen 100. Haven't seen as many from the earlier 40s lists. Participating in the All-Time List gave me a big boost. When I noticed I only had 5 left to go, I just forged ahead.

Of the four WWII films I watched for the list, I liked The Story of G.I. Joe the best. Like you it falls a little outside my list.

Thanks to everyone for your participation this round. I'll be releasing the results shortly in the next three posts. Here as usual is a guide to what the figures listed after each film represent, each separated with a slash mark:

1. Total points (50 for each #1 placement, 49 for each #2, etc.)
2. Number of lists the film appeared on (out of 38 submitted). If the film appeared in anyone's top 10, the number of top 10 appearances is also denoted in parentheses.
3. Highest placement of the film on any one list. If more than one person ranked the film this high, this is also denoted in parentheses.
4. Change in position from the 2012 list, with movements of 10 or more highlighted.

So for example, the 755/22(9)/1(x3)/+28 shown for To Be or Not to Be means that it scored 755 points and appeared on 22 lists (and nine top 10s), with three people ranking it as high as #1. The film also moved up 28 positions from its placement on the 2012 list.

For the list of orphans, only figure #3 is displayed (the highest rank, not the score given).

If anyone would like me to PM them a list of how all of their picks fared in the overall tally (rather than having to scour through all of the results) it's a simple thing for me to do. Just let me know.

I'll open the 1950s thread in the next few days. In the meantime, feel free to continue discussion in this thread regarding the results of this project and to share your individual lists (including defenses of your poor-faring favorites).

I dropped to 99/101 (Thieves' Highway and Opfergang) from 100/101 (Fires Were Started). This was a pretty brutal list for Humphrey Jennings wasn't it? Actually pretty tough on a lot of non-Archer/Carol Reed UK films. Can we blame this on Brexit too?

I also now realize I had a third orphan: The Sin of Harold Diddlebock. Sign to Criterion to hurry it up with the Lloyds (or okay, there are 8 other Sturges people wanted to vote for, but hope springs eternal for me and Mike Bloomberg).

My top 10 and also-rans:
1) To Be or Not to Be
2) Hail the Conquering Hero
3) A Canterbury Tale
4) Children of Paradise
5) Curse of the Cat People
6) The Best Years of Our Lives
7) Paisan
8) Daisy Kenyon- This was my big discovery during this round, if a known classic that was sitting in my kevyip for years can be called a discovery. I assume this doesn't get more votes because a) the ending is somewhat pat and lame or b) Fox set up an A24-horror style game of disappointed expectations by trying to market it as a noir.
9) Late Spring
10) Black Narcissus
26) The Spiral Staircase
31) Let There Be Light
32) High Sierra
41) The Sin of Harold Diddlebock
42) Cluny Brown
44) Le Ciel Est A Vous
45) Brute Force
47) Crows and Sparrows
48) The Picture of Dorian Gray
49) The Bank Dick
50) Reign of Terror/ The Black Book

Thanks, swo.

I have a request, only if it's possible and easily feasible (otherwise I would do it manually): The most voted directors in Vol. 3 (all decades). The longer list, the better. And then in Vol. 4 so far.

I'm curious about the preponderance of English-language cinema (quite evident this time).

I think we're going to see that drastically change in the coming decades. The 40s were truly the age of the Hollywood Studio System at full peak and also the one with the most popular works of British cinema.

Actually, pretty much every decade around half the points go to films from the USA. That's just the way it is.

Also I'm not sure how meaningful an aggregate director metric would be considering fluctuations in participation. For example, some of the early decades had ~40% more lists submitted than later decades

The sixties is the only decade where I can’t see that being the case

It was really the 1990s where participation dropped off last time, for whatever reason

Prob due to the stress of the realization that once you plug in the entire Parker Posey filmography, there’s still like five more spots to fill before you can submit

Shit I had no clue the deadline passed to submit a revised list. Thanks for compiling looks like another terrific list.

Looks like Naruse managed to do no better than "also ran". Not his "best" decade to be sure -- but one in which he did do some of his most striking (albeit largely invisible in the West) films.
