Directed by Peter Medak (The Krays) and with a screenplay by Hilary Henkin (Wag the Dog), this neo-noir thriller made in 1993 stars Gary Oldman as a corrupt cop assigned to protect a seductive Russian woman, played by Lena Olin, and features a superb supporting cast that includes Annabella Sciorra, Juliette Lewis and Roy Scheider.

Released for the first time in the UK on Blu-ray, special features include a newly filmed interview with Peter Medak and a newly recorded audio commentary by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, along with the original trailer, isolated score and illustrated booklet of new essays.

Corrupt cop Jack Grimaldi (wonderfully played by Oscar-winning actor Gary Oldman) is about to get in way over his head. In bed with the mob, Jack has made a lot of money but when he gets an assignment from the Feds to protect the beautiful but deadly Mona Demarkov (Lena Olin), orders from the mob to kill her, and an entirely different offer from Mona herself, he finds himself lured into a web of treachery in which nobody can be trusted.

Mark Isham's score is beautiful. It's up with Never Cry Wolf, Mrs. Soffel, and his collaborations with Alan Rudolph as his finest work.

And this film is also notable for Lena Olin's astonishing performance (up there with Linda Fiorentino's character in The Last Seduction, and it is interesting how these post-Basic Instinct films really took the ' highly sexualised, obviously deadly femme fatale figure' and really ran with it) being able to out-lunatic even Gary Oldman at the peak of his 'crazed hysteria' period!
