Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
For me the big takeaway from Feltenstein is WAC not being able to do 4k discs right now because of the cost (You can hear it at the 42:06 mark). Could that mean Criterion becomes their de facto label for titles that Warner Archive would've kept for themselves in the past?

A listing been found for a 4K release of Singin' in the Rain.Ribs wrote: ↑Tue Nov 02, 2021 1:11 amGeorge Feltenstein made another appearance on the Let’s Get Physical podcast, and discussed working on a 4K release for next year of an older film that previously was released on Blu without its original mono, which seems considering its anniversary extremely likely to be Singin’ in the Rain.

The incomparable James Cagney stars with Dennis Morgan, Brenda Marshall and Alan Hale in his first Technicolor feature, once again reunited with Warner Bros.' legendary Michael Curtiz at the helm. Cagney portrays pilot Brian MacLean, a hot-shot Canadian pilot who is just as adept at stealing flying jobs from his competition as he is at stealing their girlfriend's hearts. But when he hears a speech by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill about the looming Nazi threat, MacLean enlists in the Royal Canadian Air Force . . . only to find his superior is a man from whom he stole both a job and a girl--and to encounter action and adventure in aerial combat over the North Atlantic. This was the first Hollywood production to be filmed almost entirely on location in Canada, and was released right after the U.S. entered WWI

Wow. Never expected an improved release of the Wellman ASIB, but I'll happily take it. IIRC, the Kino release is from a print in the Eastman house, so this should be a major improvement.

I saw The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm yesterday and was blown away by what I saw, looks great. Also, despite having some pretty clunky performances, a very entertaining and memorable movie.

Not important, but the cover for A Star is Born is so different from all the other WA covers, it doesn't really fit their aesthetic.

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
I was speculating to a friend that the original poster art, unlike the film, may not be in public domain… but that could be way off.

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
I saw brothers grimm at the cinerama dome when they ran the only cinerama print a few years ago, the print had gone pinkish at times and also broke down for at least forty minutes. I wanted to like it but it's pretty clunky. Also I could have disliked it more because of the breakdown (iirc they didn't play the breakdown reel, or if they did play it, the breakdown itself took so long I forgot it played). may have to give it another chance without so many caveats.

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
Cinerama shows always had a "breakdown reel" prepared in case something went wrong... which, with six projectors and a separate sound unit, was very likely.

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
Are you talking about the screening of this at the Arclight in Los Angeles years ago? I remember it was part of a Cinerama festival and that one of the sides of the image had to come from a collector that Warner Bros. had to negotiate with because it was a part of the image the studio owned no existing copy of. I wish I went just for the spectacle of it as I knew it required three projectionists to run, even with a 40 minute breakdown.movielocke wrote: ↑Tue Jan 25, 2022 2:47 pmI saw brothers grimm at the cinerama dome when they ran the only cinerama print a few years ago, the print had gone pinkish at times and also broke down for at least forty minutes. George Feltenstein on future WAC releases from the Golden Harvest catalogue:
Pedicab Driver (1989)
Blade of Fury (1993)
Big Bullet (1996)
Downtown Torpedoes (1997)
The Blade (1995)
He’s a Woman, She’s Man (1994)
A Terra-Cotta Warrior (1990)
I wouldn't be surprised if Pedicab Driver and The Blade are the first of the titles to be getting a WAC release.
Some of the early-wave titles released include these:“Well I think I can say there were a few that had no involvement with Jackie Chan that were part of our DVD initiatives, and aired on our late lamented Warner Archive instant streaming service...which unfortunately was before its time..but we were showing HD masters on that service, and we were very proud of that...Some of the first releases we're looking at are films that were part of that initial group of DVDs. So I think that's a good hint..So keep your eyes out for more Golden Harvest"

I hope they give them proper subtitles (all the DVDs had dubtitles.)

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
Drunken Master 2 didn't get new subtitles, I think, nor did it get a new transfer
I didn't get to see any of those HD presentations on streaming that Feltenstein talks about, though.

I think the Golden Harvest titles they released on DVD-r used HD transfers, but I could be wrong.
