Agreed. Especially considering the long wait time.domino harvey wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2025 9:24 pmWhen I saw Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, I thought for sure it was going to be the Minnelli one! Awful month of releases.... Magilla Gorilla, good lord man

Personally happy that Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (and for that a matter a silent film of some stature) is getting a release. Hopefully The Crowd, The Wind, and Greed are other famous silent titles they will be releasing.

Four Horsemen is a well-regarded silent and they release so few of them that I'll gladly support it

And Four Horseman comes with a Carl Davis score, no less! That gives me hope that they'll keep his score whenever they finally get to releasing The Crowd .

Is Criterion not interested in these classic silents? I can't believe Warner would be willing to license much bigger titles but not The Crowd.

Criterion can only release what Warner Bros. chooses to restore.
Seemed like a typical Warner Archive release slate for me. A couple of "oh cool" releases and a couple of "ooooookay" releases.domino harvey wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2025 9:24 pmAwful month of releases.... Magilla Gorilla, good lord man

WAC gets praise and grief from all corners, which to me indicates they do a good job reaching a variety of interests. I don't care for the HB animation releases myself but those fans are certainly out there.

On the latest Extras podcast, George said that their big silents have been licensed to one of their partners for awhile. …so Criterion.

Ah so no wonder we haven’t got them.
I often wonder though if Rick’s reconstruction of Greed was even HD? Does anyone know? If not perhaps one holdup for that title is they are having to scan all the photographs again, and hand colour the gold elements etc.

I have to find it again to confirm, but I bought the reconstruction on iTunes years ago and IIRC it was indeed in HD.

Update on The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921):
"According to George Feltenstein on “The Extras” podcast they scanned Kevin Brownlow’s 35mm restoration in 4K and also scanned other prints that had extra scenes that Kevin’s print was missing or that looked better. It will have Carl Davis’ score with some minor adjustments."

Trying to hide the money from his wife, Joe gives it to his friend Nick Drumman (Edwin Max) for safekeeping. When Joe attempts to retrieve the money and return it to Backett, he finds himself caught up in a murderous web. Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
I had Side Street as part of Warner's old two-fer DVD, which I ditched after They Live by Night (the other film) was reissued by Criterion. Good to see it's getting a belated Blu-ray upgrade, and from a brand-new 4K scan to boot.
I've always wanted to check out Clean and Sober given the praise Keaton got for his performance. I feel like the film's reputation hasn't grown and it's arguably become somewhat obscure, but I've seen so many films with Keaton, I'm curious to see a performance that may very well be great and surprising.

I caught up with Side Street recently and found it pretty subpar for Mann, but I quite liked Jean Hagan’s scene.
But a great day for domino and twbblus, the world’s two biggest Lili fans. It’s also a Jacques Lourcelles favorite. It should be a treat in HD.

domino is the OG fan, but yes, a wonderful announcement! I'm glad they're keeping after Mann but I do wish they'd get to some of his better work. Clean and Sober is also a terrific film about addiction, for anyone interested in an authentic look at that

There’s a couple Lon Chaney vehicles that deserve a good release (West of Zanzibar and He Who Got Slapped being the most needing of a Blu-Ray), while The Merry Widow, The Flesh and the Devil, Show People, The Patsy, Lady Windermere’s Fan, Don Juan, and So This Is Paris all are stuck on DVD.

Re: Warner Brothers Archive Collection Blu-rays
Clean and Sober is a masterpiece and I will definitely snap that up. This will be its first home video release in widescreen too. I had been hoping against hope that one of the boutiques would pick it up for a nice special edition release, but I’m grateful to get it in HD at all.
Keaton and Morgan Freeman are both really fantastic and M. Emmet Walsh is reliably solid as an AA sponsor who gets to lay some truths on Keaton’s character near the end in a wonderful speech.
One of the best addiction dramas ever made.

It's worth noting that I've never met anyone in recovery who's seen the film and hasn't felt it to be both accurate and of substantial quality. Doesn't mean it's everyone's story, but it's a genuine engagement with the disease
I haven't seen the film in a very long time but, aside from at least two tragic moments, I recall the film being very fun - a well-balanced addiction drama with some comedic touches
