Wow what a month! I wonder if, like with the musicals and Thin Man movies, we'll be getting more of the MGM Marx films in the next couple months. A Day at the Races has always been one of my favorites.

Honestly surprised (and thrilled!) that we're getting The Naked Spur, it seemed like one of those movies where the 3-strip Technicolor was so messed up that it would be really difficult to restore, but WAC seem to be working restoration miracles all the time these days. Funny that Winchester '73, the most acclaimed and famous Mann/Stewart western, will be the last one to make it to Blu-ray (or if the rumors of it being with Criterion are true, the first in 4K!)

The Naked Spur, yes, but I've got mixed feelings about A Night at the Opera. What Punch the Clock was for Elvis Costello, A Night at the Opera is for the Marx Brothers - a conscious attempt (under someone's guidance and suggestion, albeit much moreso for the Marx Brothers) to move away from their past adventurousness and do something much more conventional and ordinary. In both cases, the results were respectable and it got them a hit ("Everyday I Write the Book" was EC's biggest single in a while and A Night at the Opera became their highest grossing film), but they're far from my favorites.

I 've just been going through the extras on the Arrow The Far Country, and the mention of how great Naked Spur is as an example of a western using landscape made me wish for a blu-ray for a revisit... and now voilà.

As for the Marx Bros., I’m thrilled even though A Night at the Opera is not my favorite. WB is unlikely to blu any of the MB films. For me A Day at the Races is as good as A Night at the Opera but due to the black face musical scene WB have decided not to go there. When I think of Marx Bros. films I always count the number of memorable skits. Races is loaded with them, but Opera has one of the most iconic in all of classic Hollywood comedies, the stateroom scene.

Yes, along with Winchester 73. I rewatched the old The Naked Spur DVD last year and really wish it looked better. A film like that deserves a gorgeous remaster and I'm happy it's finally coming.

My favorite of the bunch has to be Straight Time, one of the great actor as auteur films of the 70s.

Anyone know if Straight Time carries over the commentary track from the DVD? It's Hoffman and director Ulu Grosbard (not in the same room at the same time) and is quite interesting.

It's great news for Marx Brothers fans that " A Night At The Opera" is finally coming out on Bluray, just hope one of these days WB can locate an original 1935 cut of the film.

Does Warner Archive on their Amazon store ever do sales in the way they used to on their old store? It seems pricing all use that sort of random, algorithmic Amazon pricing where prices change suddenly. The only time I've ordered any Warner Archive titles since their move onto Amazon was when I saw the price of Baby Doll and Drunken Master 2 drop to $12. I just miss the 4 for $40 sales they used to do.

Someone who seems reliable has confirmed on Blu-ray.com that George Feltenstein has been brought back on full time and (among other things) will continue overseeing the WAC range.

I agree with you. A great library of films and yet many they release are meh. But better the devil you know….
