Spirits of the Dead

#1 Post by Person » Wed Jun 27, 2007 5:28 pm

In August... Histoires Extraordinaires (Spirits of the Dead) (1968). I wonder if it will contain Terence Stamp original English voice?

Even the Italian version of Toby Dammit has Tel doing his own English dialogue, so there's something seriously wrong if it doesn't.

Can anyone confirm the above?

Various retail sites list the Arrow Spirits of the Dead as having the French soundtrack, so it looks like you'll be deprived the pleasure of Terry's dulcet tones. Toby Dammit is regularly shown on late-night TV in Italy, and although it's been a while since I saw it, I'm sure that in that version he speaks/rants/declaims in English throughout while all around him speak Italian. There's an Italian DVD available (Tre passi nel delirio), but I haven't seen it.

there still doesn't seem to be a definitive answer to this question.

is there anyone who owns this DVD who can confirm whether the english dialogue is used for the toby dammit segment?

cheers!

Admittedly the rest ofSPIRITS OF THE DEAD is not all that great, but why this stand-alone release? Rights issues?

I think I'll wait for specs and reviews, oh yeah and for the price to drop to £5.

Concerning Arrow's imminent TOBY DAMMIT DVD, the press release states:

Included is the 2008, Toby Dammit cinema version restored under the personal supervision of its renowned cinematographer Giuseppe Rotunno. Screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, where it was widely acclaimed by the press as a lost Fellini masterpiece.
Also features a new interview with Terence Stamp.

The selling point, and what distinguishes this stand-alone release from its previous inclusion in SPIRITS OF THE DEAD, is that according to this link, the restoration is in Italian, with Terence's Stamp's original English dialogue, rather than the entire film being in the French dub.

We're working on this right now, will have specs as soon as they're ready. Likely to have a decent sized booklet and hoping for more but it's a bit of a struggle dealing with certain people at the moment...

EDIT: Link fixed.

Is this new Spirits release Blu-Ray only or will there be an SD version as well?

But that's not the same as the restored/remastered Toby Dammit SD which was previously announced and now seems to have been supplanted by this Blu-Ray release, right? Sorry for the confusion but I'm asking for a friend who preordered Toby Dammit only to have it switched to the Spirits Blu. (His emails to Arrow have gotten no response.)

Specs for Spirits of the Dead:

Special Features:
- Brand new transfer of Spirits of the Dead from a new HD restoration of the original negative
- Alternative English language version of Metzengerstein, English dubbed version of William Wilson and English & Italian audio versions of Toby Dammit as well as the French dubbed version of Spirits of the Dead
- Brand new English subtitle translation on all versions
- Features rare Vincent Price voice over narration used for the US theatrical version
- 60 (TBC) page booklet featuring Edgar Allan Poe’s original short stories Metzengerstein, William Wilson and Never Bet the Devil Your Head (Toby Dammit)
- ‘Spirits of the Dead Revisited’ essay by critic and author Tim Lucas
- ‘Literature and Cinema’ essay by scholar and author Peter Bondanella on Toby Dammit
- Re-prints of original lobby cards and promotional material

We're packing this in a windowed slipbox, the BD in a standard amaray and the booklet full size (same as case) packed inside the slipbox meaning if our artwork doesn't take your fancy you can pack the booklet in front and display that artwork instead. There is a total of four (TBC) artworks to display as we know how picky some people can be!

Wasn't Toby Dammit restored earlier and separately from the others?

Yes that's right but once we saw the restoration we thought it made sense to revisit the whole film so we have used this restoration instead.

Here's a review of the disc from Mondo Digital.
