Why not? It is an English language film, it will have English subs, it will have features with English speaking cast and crew, and its UHD so its region free.flyonthewall2983 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 04, 2019 3:41 pmI wouldn't get too excited yet, except for our German friends.

Hate to ask again but is their stuff as far as regular Blu-ray discs region-free?

This is their policy: "We do "hate" forced subs. If we can, we even omit the region code."flyonthewall2983 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 05, 2019 2:58 amHate to ask again but is their stuff as far as regular Blu-ray discs region-free?

Is this his first film to get a 4K upgrade?

VIDEODROME has been announced for 4K by Elephant Films in France but like CRASH there’s no date yet.

I don't recall Videodrome being specially announced with a new restoration.

No, there’s been no new restoration announced for VIDEODROME but then the only reason CRASH had a restoration announced was because it’s never been available in HD before (and originally it was only announced as a blu ray).

Re: Crash (David Cronenberg, 1996)
The date has been pushed back to late May, and it sounds like it will not be possible to buy from Amazon.de or UK to the US due to restrictions on non-essential items.

The later the better, given what’s going on right now.
As far as I can tell, Germany’s not shipping internationally at the moment anyway.

Re: Crash (David Cronenberg, 1996)
My local independent theatre has a weekly podcast, and on this week's podcast the programmer mentioned that as Ontario starts to consider when to re-open movie theatres, the first phone call he's received from a distributor is an offer to screen the new 4K restoration of Crash.
The second most interesting comment from this episode (unrelated to Crash, sorry), is that this theatre screened many of the Netflix movies late last fall, and Netflix has yet to cash any of the revenue cheques that were submitted by the theatre.

I could not think of any better screening of Crash than an illicit unauthorised drive-in screening that gets raided by the police halfway through.

Re: Crash (David Cronenberg, 1996)
Was it Alamo Drafthouse that use to do pop-up drive-ins at actual shooting locations (e.g. Close Encounters at Devil's Tower)? They could do one for Crash under the Gardiner Expressway in Toronto.colinr0380 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2020 1:24 pmI could not think of any better screening of Crash than an illicit unauthorised drive-in screening that gets raided by the police halfway through.

That almost might be too much. I remember I was either reading the book, or listening to the soundtrack while travelling on public transport (a tram I think), and it was just a little unnerving.

Re: Crash (David Cronenberg, 1996)
The new 4K version is being screened in a few places in Canada tomorrow. Cronenberg recently did an interview, where he was asked about the reception it got at Cannes, specifically Francis Ford Coppola's reaction to it and refusal to prize it
CP: The controversy surrounding "Crash" started at Cannes where your film won a Special Jury Prize. Coppola, the jury president that year, described your work as original, daring and audacious, but he went out of his way to note that some people on the jury didn't support the recognition. Did you ever find out who was against it?
Cronenberg: Coppola was totally against it.
CP: Was it just him?
Cronenberg: I think he was the primary one. When I'm asked why ("Crash") got this Special Jury Award, well, I think it was the jury's attempt to get around the Coppola negativity, because they had the power to create their own award without the president's approval. And that's how they did it, but it was Coppola who was certainly against it.
CP: Did you talk to Coppola about it after Cannes?
Cronenberg: The strange thing is that I've run into him several times at various festivals. Always the first thing he says is: "Remember, we gave you this award." I swore to myself that the next time he said that, I was going to remind him that he was not amongst those who wanted to give ("Crash") a prize. In fact, during the final closing night ceremony he wouldn't hand me the award. He had someone else hand it to me. He wouldn't do it himself.
CP: That sounds a little petty.
Cronenberg: Yeah, I thought so. Because later I was president of the (Cannes) jury as well. You always end up with awards that maybe you don't think are justified, but your team jury members do. You have to be gracious about it. I don't think he was very gracious.

Not surprising with the 4K restoration making the rounds (next weekend for me here in Ottawa!). I wonder if Arrow is releasing it in both regions or just one.yoloswegmaster wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 10:12 amArrow is sending post cards for Cronenberg's 'Crash'.

Hooray! That solves the conundrum over buying it from Germany when (last I checked) they’re not shipping outside their border. Though I’m a bit jealous of the screening tour, as well as simply being able to go to the cinema.

oh thank god. Now I wonder if they're able to release an actual UHD but it's not a dealbreaker if not. I can't wait to own it on HD period.

I don't know where you're based, but I placed an order from Amazon Germany just last week and it shipped to the U.S. The order wouldn't go through just a few days earlier, with a message stating that they couldn't ship to my location, but on August 9 the message was gone and I successfully ordered. Shipping was steep (21 euros, almost as much as the item I ordered!), but it shipped from Poland to Germany to Ohio to Texas in just four days!Adam Grikepelis wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 11:56 amHooray! No great surprise - the restoration pretty much guaranteed a release outside just Germany, and they were always by far the most likely label to pick it up.yoloswegmaster wrote: ↑Fri Aug 14, 2020 10:12 amArrow is sending post cards for Cronenberg's 'Crash'.

Re: Forthcoming: Crash (1996)
Wish I liked this movie more. It sounds so crazy from pretty much any plot description ever written for it, and it's ultimately really tame and inert and unpleasant to watch. At least, that was my experience. Videodrome (zany footage on the titular channel itself aside) tows this line a lot better, IMO. Maybe I just need to see it again.

Re: Forthcoming: Crash (1996)
I revisited the film for the first time in a while a few weeks back and liked it a lot, maybe even more than when I was younger. I don’t have a firm grasp on any particular reading but I think that’s one of the film’s strengths. It’s like an indescribable mood, a projection of confusion around our compulsions, and the horrors, humor, and (ironically) banalities in how we approach and cope with them; from the specificity by which we try to assign concrete meaning to them to the broad objective wonder of how we take them seriously. The film is mature enough not to scoff at these approaches though. It’s empathetic to the tools of existentialism and the voluntary and involuntary psychology of addressing our traumas. You could call it a twisted kind of sublimation, and that’s a fun way to look at it, but that’d be too tidy an explanation.

Re: Forthcoming: Crash (1996)
Given that they have just released Harley Cokliss' Dream Demon, perhaps this bodes well for Arrow to add in the 1971 BBC version of Crash starring Ballard himself! (Though I'd just as much like to see that segment of Channel 4's 1993 Without Walls series "New Nightmares" which features readings from Crash over footage of crash test dummies and carnage from Maximum Overdrive!)
