How's the quality of the english subtitles, Aunt Peg. I was waiting for the Eureka! announcement, and it seems they're jamming both the film and the doco onto one disc!

Národní filmový archiv’s latest Blu-ray Daleká cesta / Distant Journey (1949) looks fabulous.

...although if their release of Closely Observed Trains is any guide, none of the extras will have subtitles.

But I'd dearly love to be wrong about this, so corrections are most welcome.

The NFA discs that I own at the moment have English-friendly extras, the booklets are also bilingual. Hopefully Distant Journey is not an exception.

Well, got a response from NFA just now and the film + the extras for DJ are indeed subbed in English.🍻

So this includes seven contemporaneous bonus films not featured on the Second Run release? (The SR appears to share one and also have one exclusive.)

I imagine it costs pretty much nothing for the Czech National Film Archive to slap these titles onto their own releases, but they'd charge a licensing fee per title for anyone else.

See also the BFI's The Day the Earth Caught Fire and its nearly 90 minutes of archival extras, which would have cost any other label considerably more to put together.

(Not that this is a criticism of either the NFA or BFI - large film archives are eye-wateringly expensive to run, and generating income through licensing fees is a perfectly legitimate method of keeping things ticking over.)

It looks like the Czech release can't be purchased for shipment overseas, is that right?

According to some reports (at Zona for example), we can expect Blu-ray releases of When the Cat Comes, The Party and the Guests, Pearls of the Deep and Carriage to Vienna from Národní filmový archiv.

On the site dedicated to digital restoration of the Czech cinema heritage
https://eea.nfa.cz/cz/filmy/
one can find these titles and some others too.

That's just a list of Czech NFA digital restorations. I'd be surprised (albeit pleasantly) if they all came out on Blu-ray.

Every movie in this list is available for rent as DCP or Blu-ray with English subtitles.

For theatres, I'd presume.

And I suspect the rental charge is many times higher than the price of a commercial Blu-ray!

Yes, for a public presentation.

There is a price list at this site. Licensing and renting for Czech Republic is about EUR 150, for abroad EUR 300.

Does anybody know of any shipping forwarders in the Czech Republic? I want to order something from the Czech Republic but presently due to COVID there is no shipping to Australia from the seller.

There has been a long lasted argument between NFA and some professional organizations in Czech Republic, notably Czech Society of Cinematographers, about poor digitization of old Czech movies by Hungarian NFI. Now, this discussion was held in Parliament on September 16 2021 and the political party STAN Movement issued the press release particularly mentioned "The Cassandra Cat".
The film 'When the Cat Comes' was restored in Italy, although the renowned Prague company UPP could have provided better quality work.
