Re: Arrow Announcements, Speculation & Wild, Irresponsible Conjecture
The reprint of the Shinya Tsukamoto set is good news — it was a little ridiculous how quickly it sold out. The loss of the book is a shame, though, as the contents were all very good reads. And I didn't even know the Graveyard of Honor set went OOP!

I pre-ordered both of these quite early, but I was still shocked by how fast the Graveyard set was gone. People are afraid of another Battles Without Honor situation, I think. There is clearly a demand for Fukusaku's work on Blu, which is fabulous.

(I haven't seen anything about the results of the charges in 2014, or the revenge porn incident, and obviously some of the public square outcry about these kinds of crimes is that there has not been adequate official responses to them.) Aside from a matter of scale and urgency, an "ex-con" would have at least in theory done his time and paid a price to society. The ex-con needs an income and a re-integration into society and people need food. The world can wait on an upgrade of Hardware until this guy has faced some consequence for his actions. In the meanwhile, if Stanley needs to get a job bagging groceries to get by, maybe he can find one of those.furbicide wrote: ↑Sun Mar 21, 2021 8:56 pmIf you give Stanley money for the art he makes, I don't see how that's any different to paying an ex-con to serve you at a supermarket checkout. In each case, they're doing work that you're benefiting from, and that's the extent of the transaction. The notion that you're enabling them to be violent in their personal life just doesn't really come into it unless the work itself they are doing is tied up in exploitation. It's not that they shouldn't be held accountable for what they're doing off the job; it's just that there are good and bad ways to hold people accountable (good = calling the police; bad = getting a posse together and beating them up in the supermarket carpark, for example). I acknowledge that these lines aren't always clear, but I think they're necessary ones to draw and that – in businesses' rush to distance themselves from any and all undesirables – we as a society are categorically failing to do so at the moment.
Am thankful Michael B linked to Amaris' post. The writing's sharp and direct and compelling, and the fact she co-wrote Color Out of Space helped ameliorate some of the queasiness I got when Netflix shipped me that DVD the day before all this stuff broke.
How long is this meanwhile? He hasn't been charged, as far as I know. All we have is a well-written blog post.

Great news! Do you happen to have a link with more details? Couldn't find anything on Arrow's socials. Hopefully we're not losing anything from the Tsukamoto set besides the book (which is a big enough shame). The original sold out so fast -- anyone know approximately when? -- I couldn't believe I'd missed it. Guess I was also surprised, though heartened, by the level of demand.yoloswegmaster wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 7:07 amIn other news, Arrow is going to be releasing standard editions of Tremors, the Tsukamoto box, and the Graveyard of Honor series.

From her post. And no, I'm not sure if she's referring to actual filed charges or just accusations, and yes, tarring and feathering one person merely on another person's say-so is iffy process. But she mentions witnesses, cursory Googling doesn't reveal any denials from Stanley or his lawyers (which could of course be forthcoming). Who knows if Stanley is significant enough to warrant a journalistic deep-dive to win the trust of victims who want to maintain their privacy, turn up corroborative testimony, access all the police and FBI files. "Meanwhile" should probably mean "until he's successfully defended himself and repaired his reputation or does his time and tries to redeem himself." But practically it will probably mean however long it will take for some production company to feel like the heat has died down enough to consider working with him again. Now there are another set of charges against him for Domestic Violence, Assault & Battery from another woman who was his partner. Another woman who believed him and loved him, and whom he beat the shit out more than once, and who was afraid she was going to die by his hand. I remember that feeling all too well.

Re: Arrow Announcements, Speculation & Wild, Irresponsible Conjecture
Fair points.
There were a number of articles about the case when Arrow and SV dumped him, but they all led back to their statements and to Amaris' post. It would indeed have been nice if you could swap some of those articles with at least one article that went a bit deeper, but that's often not how it works, obviously. It still seems to me like a rash decision by the two companies (morally, if not PR-wise), assuming they don't know a whole lot more than what has been made public.

Severin tweeted a few days ago a statement that mentions having talked with two survivors. They later clarified that they weren't canceling or recalling any of the Richard Stanley releases they've done already but rather how to handle future proceeds (similar to SV)

I don't have much to add to the conversation on Richard Stanley except that the opening incident of domestic abuse that kicks off Dust Devil and propels the couple into the desert may now have a different tenor to it.

Good. Now if only every other label would do the same. Vinegar Syndrome especially drives me nuts: Etiquette Pictures (defunct, I know), Fun City, AGFA, the porn stuff, seems like they have 15 sub-labels and 175 distribution deals. It gives me a headache. I'm interested in films, I don't care about branding (or collection numbering, either).Drucker wrote: ↑Mon Mar 22, 2021 1:37 pmArrow Academy to fully merge with the primary Arrow Video line. That’s not really the same situation; that would be like if Second Run and Third Window also merged with Arrow Video and all released under one label. VS just provides an entry point for distribution for a bunch of other indendent labels, none of which are actually part of the company.

Right, that's why I weighted the "distribution" side of that example. Still a mess if you ask me.
I thought it was dumb for Criterion to have Eclipse as well, or Fantagraphics to have FU Press.
Something always suffers: promotion, availability, long-term viability, ghettoization, etc.
I'm a fan of one roof.
Don't like video stores with categories, either, but hey.

First thought was Cronenberg's Spider - but not only do I not know where the rights lie with it, but it seems far too literal a clue for Arrow...

I know that they tried for The Slider's Stratagem in the past. If rights have been sorted then it could well be that - a restoration has been released on Blu-Ray in Japan I think

It is apparently Irezumi, as that is the species of spider that appears in the film.
Other (potentially bad?) news is that Arrow has new owners

The amazing thing about this film is that its producer, the late David Weisman, kept every single rush from it. You can create something similar to the Charles Laughton Directs "The Night of the Hunter" feature from Criterion's disc that was made by the UCLA Film & Television Archive. There are drafts of scripts that Burt Lancaster wrote, too. It's an incredibly rich film to mine features from.

All credit to this post at the Blu-ray forums for figuring it out that it was a clue for Irezumi.

Wow that is impressive. It's a great film (It got a Japanese blu-ray last year I beleive). But does Arrow usually announce a director's work two months in a row? Keep the Masumura's coming!!!!dwk wrote: ↑Wed Mar 24, 2021 6:27 pmAll credit to this post at the Blu-ray forums for figuring it out that it was a clue for Irezumi.
edit nevermind, it occurs to me that with Covid releases are getting moved up and down the schedule so it might not have been planned this way.
