Mods, could we make all Dynamic Top Ten threads sticky threads so one doesn't have to go back to the second or even third page of the New Films subforum to find them?

They're all linked in the OP of this thread. Having a dozen low-relevance stickies seems like a bad idea!

Agreed, the current year's is sticky, but it would be unwieldy to make all of them sticky. Same goes for any other sort of yearly thread.

Didn't realise. I hadn't checked this particular thread in a while. Appreciate the headsup.

First post updated

The next update after the Oscars will be the year-end one, at which time I will be doing the following:

1. No longer counting 2018 lists of less than 10, and only partially counting lists of 10 that haven't been updated recently. If you haven't edited your list since at least the last Friday of October and you want it to count as is, then you will need to add a note to your post that indicates this. Lists that I stop counting at year-end can be counted again later if they're subsequently edited to constitute a qualifying top 10.

2. Deleting empty place-holder posts in the 2018 thread that were never updated. These people are free to contribute a list at some point in the future, but they will lose their spot earlier on in the thread.

3. "Freezing" the results for years 2018 and prior (i.e. any changes during 2019 will be shown as changes from that point in time).

swo, I noticed you're listing A Rainy Day in New York under 2020. Are you hopeful about this getting a U.S. release this year? Are we not counting American Airlines' screenings on domestic flights as a stateside release in 2019?

Nope, listing it there because of the German BD release in 2020, which will be an American's first legal means of seeing it. This has always been part of my categorization criteria, in those rare cases when it's come up

Sorry if this is irritating, but since Portrait of a Lady on Fire is getting a U.S. release date in 2020, I'll probably be changing it over to this year for my own list to be consistent to my rule - but as it shows up as a 2019 film on imdb, we will be counting it towards the 2010-2019 decade list when the time comes, correct?

Trying to figure out logistics on my own tabulator document to reflect this split.

It's worth pointing out, also, that it got an awards qualifying U.S. release in 2019, just not nationally. By this logic, despite the wait until February being a little unusual, any film that gets a limited awards qualifying run in late December and expands to more theaters in January would therefore be considered a release in the latter year - say, Phantom Thread, to name one example.

Your list is your list, of course, but that's worth mentioning if you weren't aware - it didn't just play festivals in 2019.

Portrait also got a limited public release in NY in December, if you list films the way I do (non-festival US release date)

Thanks for that, mfunk and DI, I'll keep it then. I do go by that logic and only began to scratch my head because while I could have sworn that it did get the qualifying run, I seemed to stumble over the NY period when looking back over its course of release dates. I can now sleep easy tonight since my self-gaslighting has been alleviated.

It was completely muffed by NEON (who may have only had the awards bandwidth for Parasite), but not without an assist from its home country, which didn't choose it for consideration in the Foreign Language category. So it was unfortunately DOA in the rest of the categories too.

Maybe this is just me, but complaining that the (by all accounts excellent) French film you haven't seen was chosen over the one you have doesn't seem too far removed from those people who watch 5 movies a year and are perplexed that Endgame wasn't nominated for BP
