In A World... (Lake Bell, 2013)

#1 Post by mfunk9786 » Mon Oct 07, 2013 2:36 pm

Lake Bell's In a World... definitely feels like a first time effort in a lot of ways, but the original and slightly off-kilter premise and perhaps a too-stuffed roster of well-known and likable comedic actors (I'd imagine this entire universe is inhabited by "that guy!" or "that girl!" for viewers outside of the WTF listening, single camera comedy DVRing set, to the point of diminishing returns when yet another familiar face pops up) has a lot going for it. Bell has a little bit of a claustrophobic approach to shooting locations at times, and the screenplay can be a bit on the nose - the film needs more room to breathe, for sure. But when it succeeds, it does so very admirably - Bell is jaw-droppingly charming in the lead (not only because she's gorgeous, but because her comedic timing can stand up with any actress working today), and the light-but-sweet subplot involving Rob Corddry and Michaela Watkins, while a bit shoehorned in, has some of the same originality that has gotten the A plot so much attention. If you're still not convinced by my meandering paragraph, you have to at least check it out for Fred Melamed's lovingly (and frequently) shot body hair. It's the stuff of legend.

If you don't already, you should be watching Childrens Hospital (which Bell has also been directing off and on for the last couple years) where she regularly kills it amongst a murderer's row of incredibly strong comic actors and actresses

It's something that I've seen a bit of, and I enjoyed what I saw - but the 'wife dislike' effect has made it hard to binge watch (I know she'll get angry at me for saying that) with any sort of reliability. She's the one who turned me onto how great the In a World... trailer was, though, so perhaps when she catches up with the movie, Children's Hospital will be the next domino to fall (EDIT: pun wasn't intended, I swear).

That's a pretty insensitive comment in light of domino's acute vertigo.

Seeing this trailer it got me thinking that there aren't any more trailers out there (English at least) with a disembodied narrator, the Ernie Anderson Hal Douglas or Dan LaFontaine types. They are completely gone from American trailers now, aren't they?

Only if you don't count the disgustingly cute narrator in practically every Samuel Goldwyn trailer I've seen this year (the latest offender being the Still Mine trailer, which nearly made my teeth fall out with it's impossible-to-bear cutesiness). And the trailer for The Angels' Share come to think of it, but that was IFC.

Proper formatting for the title appears to be I Do... Until I Don’t
Sadly this is getting really awful reviews - currently sits at 13% on Rotten Tomatoes, albeit without a huge amount of reviews in yet.
