Re: Interstellar (Christopher Nolan, 2014)
Another sporting event awed at some kind of destruction scene - ah, Nolan, your films must be like putting on a comfy old sweater for some folks. I wonder if there'll be flyovers of skyscrapers.
Re: Interstellar (Christopher Nolan, 2014)
I'm not a huge fan of Nolan, and this doesn't seem like it will change anything, although I certainly hope to be surprised. I only skimmed the trailer, but something about it looks and feels very Spielbergian.

Re: Interstellar (Christopher Nolan, 2014)
I'm hoping he can reign it in from the loud, aorta-vibrating tendencies of his last couple of films and create a blockbuster that doesn't have to constantly be pounding away at your senses. The balance was struck quite well in The Dark Knight for the most part, and perhaps what looks to be a more desolate setting for this film is an indicator that this is a more contemplative film than something like Inception, which I continue to catch flack from friends and enemies for disliking. But, speaking of pounding away at your senses, Hans Zimmer is back, so. Perhaps I'm expecting too much [or too little, as it were].

Don't worry, you're not alone on Inception.mfunk9786 wrote:The balance was struck quite well in The Dark Knight for the most part, and perhaps what looks to be a more desolate setting for this film is an indicator that this is a more contemplative film than something like Inception, which I continue to catch flack from friends and enemies for disliking.
I think that most of Nolan's films have their fair share of flaws, maybe excluding Memento. I remember watching The Dark Knight in theaters when I was much younger, and I really liked it then, but a re-watch before the final film in the trilogy came out really demonstrated a variety of issues that plague Nolan's films, flaws that were most exacerbated in The Dark Knight Rises: poor screenwriting, poorly choreographed action sequences, and the tendency to simply over stuff the plot with more than it should contain.
I will say that Interstellar looks quite different from his past films, so let's hope for the best.

I'm looking forward to it, though admittedly it's going to stand long and hard in the shadow of Gravity.

Re: Interstellar (Christopher Nolan, 2014)
Inception is a slap in the face to the audience. It presents a plot that pretends to be more clever than it really is and goes to the trouble (via Ellen page) of explaining all the "rules". The viewer may have an "awesome" first experience in the theater but subsequent viewings are a bore.criterion10 wrote:Don't worry, you're not alone on Inception.mfunk9786 wrote:The balance was struck quite well in The Dark Knight for the most part, and perhaps what looks to be a more desolate setting for this film is an indicator that this is a more contemplative film than something like Inception, which I continue to catch flack from friends and enemies for disliking.

We have an entire thread about Inception. Don't do this here.

Re: Interstellar (Christopher Nolan, 2014)
I'm cautiously excited about this. I neither love nor hate Nolan as a director. He clearly tries to do more within the constraints of the blockbuster. I enjoyed his Batman films and I think his remake of Insomnia is underrated. They aren't primarily built around the type of obvious "mind-fuck" conceit some of his other films are, which I find rather tiresome.
I love a good movie about space exploration though and the cast looks good as well. The length of the film gets reported as something of a surprise but from the publicity this clearly aspires to be an epic.

Re: Interstellar (Christopher Nolan, 2014)
I'm mixed-to-positive on Nolan overall (The Prestige is my favorite), but I'm really intrigued by this. He has described it as a companion piece to Inception (exploring the exterior as opposed to the interior, I suppose).
Interstellar has had at least one IMAX screening in New York, for the cast and a few industry people. Obviously, they're biased, but the cast sounds genuinely pleased. When asked, Jessica Chastain said, "There's no such thing as over-hyping this. I just saw it. It's insanely good. It's one of the best things...I just can't...I don't think you're going to be disappointed." John Lithgow tweeted (and then deleted), "Mind blown at 8AM, secret IMAX screening of #Interstellar in NY. So proud to be in it."
Non-cast members who got the invite have slyly commented too. Edgar Wright tweeted, "Just saw a forthcoming film. All I can say is that it exceeded my very high expectations & I can't wait to see it on a huge screen again..." He later tweeted (and again, apparently deleted) that it was in IMAX. Critic Jordan Hoffman tweeted, "I haven't seen INTERSTELLAR yet but some people I trust did & were floored." Entertainment Weekly writer Chris Lee tweeted, "Well placed source was at #Interstellar cast screening, says it's Nolan's best film: Spielberg-ian warmth mixed with Kubrick-like braininess," and "Spielberg passed on directing the Nolan bros' #Interstellar script. My source says 'Spielberg's going to shoot himself when he sees it.'"
Nolan really wants it screened on film, especially 70mm IMAX film whenever possible. IMAX has installed a 70mm/15perf projector at the Chinese Theater specifically for the film.

They're apparently striking 50 70mm IMAX film prints for this film- I bet one will screen at the National Air & Space Museum in DC, since that's where the trailer premiered.Jeff wrote:Nolan really wants it screened on film, especially 70mm IMAX film whenever possible. A good bet that the BFI IMAX in London will get a 15/70 print, and that would be where I'd want to see this.solaris72 wrote: They're apparently striking 50 70mm IMAX film prints for this film- I bet one will screen at the National Air & Space Museum in DC, since that's where the trailer premiered.

Indeed annoying. I had it downloaded but rarely use it. Here you go. I won't bother posting the 35mm, standard IMAX, 4K digital, or standard digital engagements because there are too many of them.domino harvey wrote:I can't see it without downloading Chrome, what the hell?

If anyone knows where to find an international theater list, I'm anxious to know if there are any 70mm IMAX theaters around Vienna...
