Yeah, I knew what I was getting into but having seen the film twice now and personally finding this to be one of Allen's more perceptive and affirming works, my defensive side flared up and took the bait. There's some degree of masochism in reading any hivemindedly 'conservative' liberal texts these days.

sorry for the aparté : just trying to figure out if I can hope for a blu-ray release...
I've seen this HD transfer and it looks very nice; it has the respected Vittorio Storaro typical ratio (which I think works very well with this movie)
apparently it has already been released on blu-ray............ in Poland according to blu-ray dot com :

I really cross the fingers for a US release or UK (I hope it could be Sony (like it was for "Wonder Wheel"); in France it's only planned for DVD SD [-o<
so far a blu-ray release in Germany is planned for April :

It doesn't have a distributor in this country yet, so it has a little ways to go before that occurs.

God bless the Germans and their love and support of Blu-ray

Let's hope the aspect ratio is wrong though-- the German Blu-ray of Anything Else was cropped from 'Scope to 1.78, but surely they wouldn't mess with the aspect ratio here... right?

if the "leak" of the HD transfer is the Blu-Ray from Poland (like the video file I got was tagged) then it has the right ratio (but it's a BD25- but for a main feature than last 1h30 that's ok). Thus at least we know a country where to find it with the Storraro ratio. Regarding the German release, I don't see why they wouldn't crop it unless that's an habit of this label/boutique. All previous Woody Allen with Storraro photography can be found with the correct ratio (Wonder Wheel as released by Sony US, etc...)

Signature Entertainment have picked it up in the UK, with a digital release on June 5th. No info yet on a physical release, but there's probably no reason to hold off one of the European releases given the fact it would be barebones anyway.

Does anybody know if the Germany Blu Ray disc has unremovable German subtitles? That is the impression I'm getting from customer's reviews on Amazon's US site but those viewers may not be familiar with the subtitle option which can sometimes remove the subtitles for discs that don't have a subtitle menu option. I'm personally not familiar with any Germany Blu Ray releases that have unremovable German subtitles.

Looks like the Nordic Blu-Ray is confirmed to have non-forced subs and is region free. It’s also selling for ~$50 from unscrupulous eBay sellers, no doubt due to the pains of ordering anything from overseas right now

What do we think the odds are of Arrow releasing this?

That’s a great question. I hope they do a set of his more recent works in general.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Allen is still stipulating semi-wide theatrical release in the states for any distributor, which would count Arrow out

Sadly, Signature have picked it up for the UK and though they've only announced a digital release on June 5th I doubt that digital/physical rights have been split for this one

I'd say the likelihood of Arrow (or any other US boutique label) releasing this or any other Allen films is very low.

Edit: Then again, KL released New York Stories last year, though that's a co-directed feature.

My reason for mentioning Arrow is that they don't seem to care about that sort of controversy (cf. Sixteen Candles) and obviously have already released 19 of his other films.

Anyway, it looks like Signature in the UK is issuing a DVD release in July. No word on a Blu-ray release

Amazon have a Blu-Ray listing from Signature for the same date.

I definitely watched it without subs. As I recall, there was no menu option for it (German or English with German Subs only) but as soon as it started, I was able to remove them with the remote. No English subtitles though.

This was the #1 film at the South Korean box office this past weekend (one of the first with operating movie theaters in a while)

I think this could've been a hit in the United States had it been given a chance; I'm biased as I tend to be one of the few who like latter-years Allen, but this is my favorite since Midnight in Paris. It combines plenty of elements from some of his recent movies but does so in a focused, yet breezy way. The performances from the younger actors are uniformly excellent. I have little to add because much of what I thought about this has been reflected in previous posts. It does seem ironic that there's an optimism here, perhaps ironic or just continuing in a slightly screwball vain, that this is one of Allen's more optimistic and romantic movies--and it's the one that gets shelved. I hope some kind of release happens in the U.S.; those German blu-ray prices are too high.

As for the name Gatsby--by the middle of the movie I was wondering if that was actually Chalamet's character's name or just some silly literary nickname people had given him. It kind of works in the movie, maybe because no one feels the need to draw attention to it.

Thanks for weighing in, John Shade - there certainly is a bit of irony there and I agree that the screwball vibe allows the evocatively silly name to fit right into the film's world through oblivious acceptance.

EDIT: Can something really happen "in wake of" 30 year old news?

The Nordic blu-ray is ludicrously expensive but the German one is reasonable. Can anyone confirm whether the German disc is region free or locked? I can't find much info elsewhere.

I meant to post in here recently. I picked up the German blu ray at a reasonable price, but the real surprise is that it arrived in 10 days. I expected to wait over a month. Also, it looks great...
