The pitch for this movie: WHAT IF THE MONSTERS LEARN HOW TO USE WHITEBOARDS?

The monsters that can survive tons of bombing can now survive gunshots.

Not that I’m super invested in defending this very silly movie, but
SpoilerShow
We see the man burying what is presumably his wife, so he was committing suicide regardless of who was around. It is, of course, very convenient, just like everything else in this movie
Saw this last night and didn’t hate it, but I can understand how the big asks and narrative leaps can really overwhelm looking back on it afterwards. If as an audience member you can’t get past some of the rather absurd cheats here, you’re in trouble. A little more respect for the audience (get rid of the NY Posts and other global peeks— no reason to expand the periphery for this plot except to establish why the family stays put) would have helped, though. I do think some of the lampooning the film has received is not entirely fair on the sound issue, as it’s not that someone can’t make noise, they just have to make sure there’s another louder noise in their vicinity— so it’s not unreasonable that they could have survived this long. I think Krasinski has surprisingly good visual instincts and I’d like to see him direct a better script in this same kind of horror vein.

I thought Bird Box handled this conceit far better, and was way more affecting, unnerving and coherent. This one was borderline laughable, like a student film with a modest budget. I can’t even recall the beats, other than John Krasinski making himself the hero.

Goes to show the value of Rotten Tomatoes that it scored far higher than the former.

Rotten Tomatoes just aggregates critics' scores from elsewhere - they aren't scoring the movies themselves

Yeah... I know. I’m saying it’s a questionable guide given most critics are useless.

Seems like you might not want to refer to a site full of film criticism then, just a thought!

Was there not enough room in the little box for "Critics" at the end of your username when registering?

Ugh, I bungled that post. A site* full of film criticism. It's a fair point, man.

I'm still soaring from all the over-praising on the last film. That was just atrocious tea that somehow critics not only gave a pass on, it scored highly on reputable Metacritic. This is the status of mainstream film criticism in America.

I think we're coming out of that, just speaking in a general sense. After the responses to films like Jojo Rabbit and the new Star Wars, it seems as though film criticism is centering itself again, being more unafraid of calling a film mediocre despite a desire to prop everything up merely because it's the next pop cultural moment and some critics want to be part of the conversation without being shouted at. The first A Quiet Place came out in an otherwise, well, quiet part of the year during the peak of that poptimist era, and I think that had a lot to do with the desire to praise it. Perhaps this is overly ambitious on my part, but I think we have moved beyond that late 10s era and this is going to be a time when critics, and perhaps even the box office, are going to be having more complicated conversations about the entertainment they want to see.

I'd go on to explain why Joker was what jolted everyone awake, but how much time do you have?

I have some time and am curious about "poptimism"...(and I might take your Joker bait too).

Hopefully, they get to release it before ‘A Quiet Place 3’.

There has been a press screening in France, and the first few feedbacks I've read about it aren't particularly kind with it. Except if the movie actually was conceived as a dumb movie full of stupid characters, in which case it works perfectly.
