Up until Infinity War I don’t think any Marvel characters came back from the dead?

It's really not a spoiler, considering he's one of the main characters of this movie and will be all over the marketing, hence his being revealed the first day of filming. I think it's delightful: the approach for these movies should just be one at a time, thinking how to follow on the story logically from what came before and tell a complete story. Wonder Woman's great success, I think, was its ultimate standalone nature: it is a complete story, with a beginning, middle, and end, and had it failed and no further films were made it still would succeed on that front as this one will too. And, naturally, I don't think this detracts at all from the ending of the film, considering we know that Pine still isn't running around in the present day judging on the first movie's framing device. I see absolutely no reason why this film can't be a Spider-Man 2 to the first's assured Spider-Man and build on everything good about it with a real confidence. I don't think you *can* make a sequel to the first movie without bringing him back, anyway. It does make it extremely derivative of the other comic book Steve who went down in a plane during wartime played by a Chris, though.

That top image already has me sold, and I haven't even seen the first film yet.

I don’t know if there’s a woman more beautiful... While I didn’t care for the first one, the 80’s theme has me intrigued.

Wonder Woman 1984 splits the difference, will premiere in theatres but also be available on HBO Max on Christmas Day

The online reception to this seems to be overwhelmingly negative, which makes me wonder about the long term viability of streaming-exclusive (or day-and-date) tent pole releases. As someone who works in the exhibition industry, I find this to be somewhat encouraging (although I’m fully and readily willing to admit I’m drawing on some major assumptions to reach this correlation). Regardless, I hope this theory isn’t tested by anything in the Marvel cinematic universe (I’m looking at you Black Widow), as I suspect the legion of ravenous Marvel fans will eat up any of its releases via any distribution method.

I thought this kinda stunk - it was overlong by at least half an hour, and it feels like there are missing threads for motivations of characters, not to mention some of the special effects look truly terrible - must every DC movie end in a nighttime fight with a CGI creature?

I don't think the criticism of the film has anything to do with streaming.

The movie just isn't that good.

It's certainly overlong, dragging quite a bit in the middle section, and at times dull, but when the finale kicked into gear its sweet idealistic message of selflessness for the greater good and its excoriation of a megalomaniac preying on the worst instincts of the population worked for me. I'm probably rating it higher than its worth but after a rough year, it was nice to end with something joyous. Its many callbacks to Superman 2 (I don't think it would be unfair to call it essentially a remake) along with the 80s setting gave it some of that childhood nostalgia for me. Nice mid credit scene too.

As an aside, I think I'm a bit tired of the production/set design on these 80s flashback films. Kitchens are filled with 80s nostalgia products which no longer exist ("oh haha remember those?"), houses are full of novelty items and oh look at these weird clothes and haircuts. It's a little jarring to then watch actual filmed in the 80s movies and see that home decor looks pretty much like it did in previous decades, people are eating Cornflakes (rather than Mr T or Donkey Kong cereal) and they're not all outlandishly garbed in neon.

I call this "period fetishization" and this kind of slavish attention to minute hyper-period-specific novelties is indeed almost always annoying no matter what decade is being "recreated." But thankfully there are plenty of good period set films that don't feel the need to hit you over the head with it, though nothing about this project sounds subtle so I'm not exactly surprised to hear it ain't even in this arena

The backlash here is that this is a movie made, sincerely, for little girls. The adults in their 30s/40s watching it don’t want it pointed out to them that for 20 years now their viewing habits have never progressed beyond watching movies made for children.

Jenkins completely understands and commands this genre and as an adult has made a wonderful movie for children.

I do think it's a film that will play better for 7-12 year old girls as you state, and for that reason I can't get upset about not caring for it myself. Which reminds me - why is this film PG-13 rather than PG? The MPA is so bad at its one job.

Is a nearly three hour film really the right one for small children though?

It’s the same runtime as MARY POPPINS.

That both shuts me down and mentally gives me another reason not to trust Poppins.

It’s the same runtime as MARY POPPINS.
WW1984 = 2hrs 35min
Mary Poppins = 2hrs 19min
MRYPPNS2019 = 2hrs 10min

Credits probably mean something here, too, but gauging WW1984 against Mary Poppins is kind of unfair, especially since WW1984 had every bit of uniqueness squeezed out of it for maximum universal economic impact, but maybe Mary Poppins 2019 is probably a better comparison (and was still shorter, somehow).

Dancing penguins are always appealing, though, I don't care how old or gendered you happen to be.

How does that description not also apply to Poppins which notoriously ran the original author rancid?

I preferred his response to when someone asked what he thought of the actual movie though
Paul Schrader wrote:What movie? You know how you can stare for hours at your dog watching squirrels? That was me watching Wonder Woman.

I would love to share this kind of entertainment with my 6 and 9-year-old daughters, but almost inevitably can't because modern superhero movies are inevitably extremely right-wing. We'll be passing on this one due to its brazen misrepresentation of Egyptians/Arabs. The film apparently posits that Egypt had a king in 1984? Yeah, I'm not subjecting my kids to more Islamophobia than they already absorb from our culture.

On an unrelated note, I wonder whether the overwhelmingly negative reaction to this will cost Patty Jenkins her Star Wars picture. That would make hers something like the ninth Star Wars film prematurely abandoned after its announced creator produced something with a negative public reception. Burn, Hollywood, burn.

I would venture to say no because Warners has already greenlit a third one with Patty Jenkins returning to write and direct it.
Warner Brothers wrote:
“‘Wonder Woman 1984’ broke records and exceeded our expectations across all of our key viewing and subscriber metrics in its first 24 hours on the service, and the interest and momentum we’re seeing indicates this will likely continue well beyond the weekend,” said Andy Forssell, head of WarnerMedia’s direct-to-consumer business. “During these very difficult times, it was nice to give families the option of enjoying this uplifting film at home, where theater viewing wasn’t an option.”
