Beyond the cast credited in the trailer, Wikipedia says that Frank Oz and M. Emmett Walsh are also in the film.

I unapologetically love Rian's work, especially Brick, but also found Looper not only effective genre-mashing but quietly daring in its ambiguity of a controversial moral argument involving
SpoilerShow
whether or not to put forth effort and place hope in a problem child, or give up (here darkly involving murder) in an ends-justifying-means scenario that hit close to home in its application to my work setting in a treatment center for aggressive youth.
Still, this looks atrocious.

Really? I haven't watched the trailer (I only do these days if there's any doubt as to whether I'll be seeing the film in theaters anyway, and I similarly love Looper and Brick, as well as the best Star Wars film of all time), but I'm surprised to hear that; I would expect a pretty high floor from one of his films.

I'm still hopeful for this, especially with that cast, but that hope is dependent on the studio dumping the worst "jokes" for the trailer, which seems to be going for a comedic borderline-cartoonish mood, but nothing was funny. Still, Daniel Craig doing another Southern Boy take a la Logan Lucky is enticing, and of course anything with Lakeith Stanfield must be seen. I'll be going in with subdued expectations, but I agree with you on The Last Jedi being great, so he hasn't let me down yet!

I'm a fan of his too, but the "jokes" were so bad it made me completely disinterested. Just based on trailers alone obviously, but I feel like that Ready Or Not has this beat for the kind of vibe it's going for (albeit, much more outwardly violent).

yeah, this trailer was real rough. was expecting at least some great cinematography but at least from what we saw here this looks like Rian's least visually interesting thing he's done and at moments it looked plain ugly. and yeah, the humor was bad. the KFC joke is terrible by itself but then the trailer actually relishes that joke.

about the only thing that made me want to see more was Michael Shannon.

I love whodunnits so I'm still all over this, but this trailer is definitely bad. The Chris Evans swearing-as-a-joke scene was especially terrible.

Chris Evans is becoming one of the more grating screen presences - there's just something so "aww shucks" about the guy to the point where it makes my teeth hurt.

Anyway, this really does not look very good, does it? The Last Jedi was one of my favorite films of that year, and I enjoyed Brick well enough when it came out, but beyond that I'm rather suspect of Rian Johnson's ascension to the ranks of cinema's greatest auteurs. Perhaps the trailer is misleading, though.

I emphatically LOVE Rian Johnson's episodes of Breaking Bad but all his films are solid B-grades for me. Except for Brothers Bloom which is more like a C+ and the sub-plots of TLJ which are straight D material.

So, all two of his films then?

I just watched the trailer... I thought it was fantastic. Absolutely can't wait for this and that is one of the best casts I've seen assembled.

I really love the main Rey/Luke/Kylo plot of TLJ to the point that it still edges into B-minus territory for me. So all three of his films that aren't Brothers Bloom, ha.

As the forum’s resident alligator, I prefer “Rian” with a ‘B’ myself.

I don't think much can really be gleaned from that trailer. Only a couple of jokes were shown and they were totally stripped of context.

This was my impression. I'm not very invested in Johnson but I'll check it out.

It seems Rian Johnson's latest was surprisingly well-received at TIFF. Reviews have been mostly positive!
(I know it's extremely early, but 100% on RT w/ 16 critic reviews & 82% on Metacritic w/ 9 reviews.)

I had kind of given up on Johnson after his last sci-fi effort. Maybe the mystery genre will better suit subverting the audience's expectations.

The trailer is just OK, but I do love Craig's reading of the line, "I suspect foul play."

My working assumption is that this will be an experience similar to Brothers Bloom: some moments that are truly and wonderfully inspired, mixed with moments that are somewhat less inspired.

Is it really surprising that 'Knives Out' was well-received, though? Going by Metacritic, the only film of his that didn't get favorable reviews was 'Brothers Bloom'. He's kind of a critics' darling.

Trailer response was pretty poor, and while this may have benefited from low expectations as a result, yes, I would say in the wake of that, this being widely praised is a bit of a surprise

No. Despite the great deal of animus leveled at The Last Jedi from certain people the film did very well with critics, made bank at the box office and and was a top selling item in DVD/Blu Ray sales. He's perfectly capable of delivering the goods despite what some people have said about him.

I'm more than willing to give him a shot because I love The Last Jedi.

I'm more than willing to give him a shot because i love all his other films. The Last Jedi was a franchise film that doesn't really have his creative trademarks so i dont know why people act like its his one and only film to gauge his talents on, whether you liked it or not. Especially when it comes to his actual original efforts. Meanwhile, Brick has always been one of my faves. However, the murder mystery genre just doesn't excite me but i like what he does with genres so im thinking this might surprise me.
