...and after the first set of nominations, the leader among our ten contestants is: your humble tabulator, in a stunning coincidence.

No one had Kathy Bates.

Getting ahead of the nomination deluge to state something I learned last year: Never ever EVER put the Documentary front-runner on your predictions list.

She deserves it, big time. Cancels out Johansson being nominated for one of the worst performances of the year.

De Niro not getting nominated is one of the most baffling things I've ever seen in my admittedly limited years as an Oscar viewer.

Other than that, it's tough to get too up in arms. Nothing too egregious. (Eg-regious?)

I don't have the full list but I believe Joker is the nominations leader as it had surprises (costumes) where Hollywood had misses (editing).

Fred Raskin's never going to get the respect he deserves. He did a fantastic job editing that film, not a single bad note.

And on a preliminary count, the winner of the 1st Annual CF.org Oscar Nominations Predictions Sweepstakes is... Apperson, with 38 points out of a possible 44!

Followed by an absurd six-way tie for second consisting of me, DH, twbb, soundchaser, The Narrator Returns, and Altair!

Apperson, while I look over these one more time to make sure I didn't miss anything, let the other nine contestants know what film you'd like us to begrudgingly post some thoughts on while we grumble to ourselves about the Original Screenplay Category...

Very much agreed! If only Sandler had snuck in there as well...

Let it be known that I didn't prepare a film in advance and am now scrambling.

Deciding to limit myself to films released last year I'll go with I Lost my Body, the French animated film on Netflix and one of the nominees this year, it has one of the best scores of the entire year and a ton of style.

I'd also recommend watching in the original French voice-over as opposed to the English dub.

Honeyland (I haven't seen it) for Best Doc and Best Foreign Film...

Is that the first time that has happened?

This was my main horse in the race, the guy just can't catch a break - three wonderful performances and no recognition.

After two phenomenal dramatic performances, Sandler will finally get his Oscar nom, and it’ll be well-deserved.

A record 62 women nominated, one third of all nominees

Frozen 2 missed? It’s better than the first! I guess I’m just lost in the woods, up is down...

Congrats Apperson, what's the "reasonable" time window we're taking to see this?

I really wanted to win this one so that I could make everyone watch La flor, but now I guess I'm spared the consequential resentment

My friend also does a great angry Al Pacino impersonation when he gets shitfaced too. I really thought this would have been his year.

2 for 2 as far as I'm concerned! I thought the Sandler performance was a very shallow characterization so no tears for me there.

I liked Johansson in Jojo Rabbit a lot more than you did, and in fact more than I liked her in Marriage Story, but nominating her over Thomasin McKenzie is just weird to me. I mean, I thought Supporting Actress was the category for left-field surprises like that!

And, while I know this is not really an argument to apply to her work in either film per se ... I like Johansson a lot, but she's just not good enough of an actor for me to deserve a double nomination in a more big-picture meta sense.

In other news, I'm glad Dern got a nomination, but I'd probably have given her one for Little Women instead. But that's a quibble since she was good in Marriage Story also, and I'm enjoying this recent career resurgence of hers.

LOL at Supporting Actor featuring two top-billed roles and the three others getting above-the-line billing.

Film Twitter is going into convulsions over this rather innocuous line up, so I think it’s a great set of nominees!

I never believed Ford v Ferrari had a chance and could not understand why people were still predicting it even though it had no real precursor support, but I was clearly wrong

My only quibbles among the nominees are with several of the Joker nominations (I didn't hate the movie, and Phoenix deserves his recognition, but the Director, Screenplay, and Editing nominations in particular were big reaches); I was hoping for at least one surprise nod for Uncut Gems and A Hidden Life, but I'm not shocked that neither materialized.

The only major surprise to me is Jennifer Lopez's snub, since virtually everyone predicted her. Funnily enough, I did predict Kathy Bates (in place of Johansson).

I'm happy to see Ford v Ferrari get the Best Picture nomination. It's an old-fashioned studio thing - big stars in the lead roles, professional direction, decent story - that doesn't get made much anymore, and it seems like it's found an audience the old-fashioned way too, with solid reviews and good word-of-mouth. It's right in the middle of the pack for me in this field, but if it wins ... well, the Academy could do and has done a lot worse, and at the very least I think it'll be a fondly remembered film.
