Hey everyone!

I'm working on a project for school, I've got to attempt to identify some fragments of film from the vaults here.

Here's my fragments on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymJ7mqL6ZDE

Here's some screenshots in an Imgur album: https://imgur.com/a/XXAjrEZ (This may be helpful because of the speed it was projected makes some of the later shots go back rather quickly in a video)

These fragments came from a heavily spliced reel of fragments. Here's the hints I have based on the materials I have:

1) I think these are from 3 different films but I'm not sure, it could be more or less. I think the 3 spliced together are a) The casino scenes b) The China/Chinatown sequence c)The indigenous/native people footage. There appear to be Chinese performers in much of the earlier footage, but the films themselves look different, so I can't say for certain whether or not they're from different films. The Casino footage looks like its from the sound era.

2) It's from 16mm. Probably some sort of reproduction print.

3) It appears that some of it is silent and some of it is sound.

Even if you can't identify it, if you have any breadcrumbs as to which rabbit holes I should research down, please leave me any hints or tips of what I should look into more deeply. If any of the performers look familiar, that in itself could be a great help.

OR if anyone has any contacts or knows other people that might be of a help with identifying (like people who have special interest or expertise in early films featuring Chinese culture for example) that would be so helpful to point me in their direction.

Thank you!

The casino shots appear to be from Josef von Sternberg's THE SHANGHAI GESTURE.

Yes, I checked out that film and that appears to be correct! Thank you so much Jonathan! Never would have caught that was Gene Tierney at the table based on the material I have. I'm very grateful. I probably would never have gotten it on my own so easily because the 3 shots from THE SHANGHAI GESTURE in the reel are not continuous shots within the actual film and my material has the image mirrored. Weird. I'd chalk it up to some old collector splicing things together strangely.

Bad news is that only the first 3 shots are from that film and the rest of them appear older (likely silent era) and more challenging to place. Any other hints or tips from anyone else would be appreciated!

I've never seen Shanghai Gesture, but going by the name alone, isn't it possible that the China shots are also from it?

I considered that, but I now suspect that the common thread between all fragments that were strung together on this reel have something to do with them being "exotic", which is why it seemingly jumps to indigenous dances at the end. The von Sternberg shots seem fairly 1940s Hollywood (gliding camera, crowded indoor sets). The later Chinese footage appears to be silent era judging by the performers very animated style of acting and simpler camera placement. I have never seen the film either, but I will watch SHANGHAI GESTURE in full later to confirm. However, I've scrubbed through a few times and only found traces of the first 3 shots in my reel. No scenes set in a restaurant of that kind nor external shots of people fleeing a building nor of a crowded street.

I've done some translation and the sign outside of the restaurant appears to say "福洲樓" which I've translated to "Fuzhou Building". If we have any Chinese speakers here who can view the video or screenshots to refute or confirm that, I'd be grateful.

You are correct, it does translate to "Fuzhou Building" The other banners are too blurry to read.

Thanks for the added confirmation Lemdog!

I'm confident that the people here can identify the storm hurricane shot. I'm fairly certain its from a classic Hollywood production. Maybe using miniatures but I'm not sure. Can anyone recall a film where a storm hits a church or seaside village with palm trees visible? Here's a few more frames from the film material.

I'm back with a new fragment! Any help?

Looks like late 1910s or early 1920s. A guy with a bandaged head is stopped from smoking by a woman. He may be in a hospital. The clip is from 16mm.

If anybody recognizes the performers or the film or has any leads, let me know. Thanks!

Oh nice, thanks! I see they have a whole subforum mostly for Film IDs! I never discovered my clip from last week, so I'll post there too.

The above clip I've identified the bandaged actor as Lionel Barrymore... now I just have to find the film.

This was at the end of a dodgy copy of Ruiz's The Blind Owl that was recorded from CUNY tv. Just thought I'd test everyone's brains.

Hello I’m new to the forum. Hope I’ve posted this in the correct place.
Probably from the late 60s on a weekend afternoon on tv I remember a scene with a blonde girl eating an orange in possibly a cafe and shortly after a scene of bright car headlights approaching with the implication that someone was run down. Anyone remember....could have been a film or a series such as Z cars. It’s bothered me for 40 years or more what it was.

I recreated the title on a blank sheet, OCRed it, and got this result: 情事. Searching for that yields results for a movie from 2014, which we know isn't the correct film since Goodbye, Dragon Inn was released in 2003! However, farther down in the search results, a 1998 Korean movie with the same name shows up. It has the title 정사, though it is still referred to as 情事 on this page. The English translation is An Affair.

EDIT: Apparently, 情事 isn't Japanese like I thought it was. It's actually Korean written in the older Hanja system; using the more modern Hangul system, 정사 would be the way to write the title nowadays. The Hanja title seems to be what the film goes by. Here are the Wikipedia and IMDb pages.

Wow, thanks Boosmahn! I tried Google Translate on the image but never would've though to rewrite the characters and scan them in that way. I was also trying to make that four characters, not two...

It looks like "Xmas Presents," but I can't find a movie with that title.

Is that a "Disney" on the top left of the VHS case? I did wonder if it was a VHS colleciton of Disney Xmas shorts, but can't see any with that name from a quick search.
