is Cannes the new Oscars? that Denis movie was panned across the board, yet they're giving her a "legacy" win or whatever?? odd. obviously I'll have to see it for myself but the reception really wasn't convincing

can't believe Decision to Leave isn't winning

Hmmrmph... I personally thought The Square deserved it, but the expectation it attached to the film didn't do it any favors when everyone finally had a chance to see it. Looking forward to this either way!

Those two picks for the Grand Prix are comically on-brand for this festival, you love/hate to see it

Three NEON Palme winners in a row.
Also, I think the only person to win two Palmes in a shorter timespan is Haneke

Kyle Buchanan of the NYTimes wrote:Claire Denis made the first (Grand Prix) acceptance speech, one so lengthy that the French press began to boo. Then she took the award on the podium, so when Lukas Dhont came up next, there was no prize for him to be photographed with. (Presenter Javier Bardem remedied the situation.)

Between the STARS AT NOON recognition and CRIMES OF FUTURE snub, seems like Lindon had a pretty firm grip on his jury.

Though oddly enough he said in his speech, from what I understood, that he expected to have more control as the president and that actually the other members of the jury are responsible for the Palme winner. I take it he didn't love Triangle of Sadness? Although he said that everyone was shocked or something by it, which could be a compliment or a refusal to say any more concrete praise

Boston French Film Festival, running over the weekend, August 18-21 (I've only ever circuited the Providence, RI French fest, so one occurring in my backyard was news to me)

Variety is also reporting that Don't Worry Darling, Bones and All, and The Banshees of Inisherin are premiering at Venice, none of which should be huge surprises. The full lineup is being revealed tomorrow
