Has anyone else listened to The Plot Thickens’ season on Bonfire of the Vanities? The whole thing is essentially a condensation and catch-up of Julie Salamon’s The Devil’s Candy, with her serving as our host who shares audio from interviews she conducted at the time and contemporary conversations with people who worked on the film today. The most interesting part is the interview with De Palma’s longtime manager, whom he dropped in the wake of the film’s failure, and a 1990 chat Salamon had with one of De Palma’s brothers, who goes into detail about how their childhood influenced Dressed to Kill. There are also some fantastic audio snippets of Morgan Freeman (the sole major actor from the film who has repeatedly criticized the product and De Palma’s handling of it), but none of the really big players chatted in the present day with Salamon (who is very charming and sounds extremely similar to Cyndi Lauper). Salamon is still on friendly terms with De Palma, who strongly considered participating in the podcast before demurring-she even describes attending his pandemic birthday party on Zoom.
One thing that did irk me is that there isn’t even a mention of screenwriter Michael Cristofer, but in a way, it kind of absolves him of the final outcome.
