This is just getting stupid. Now Barry Levinson is making a film about the production of The Godfather, and they've already announced
some of the cast.

Elle Fanning will play Ali MacGraw

First thought was, "what does Ali MacGraw have to do with The Godfather?" - didn't know she was married to Robert Evans.

I've never read the Godfather novel(s?), but my understanding is that they're regarded as trash. Coppola is apparently quoted as saying "Pretty cheap stuff." Yet the films are obviously canonized and regarded as great art.

How is it that these trashy novels yielded such highly esteemed films? Was there much change in the adaptation process or what?

My dad liked the novel, but admitted it wasn't high art, and I have friends who hate it. I remember being a pretty young child and my dad telling me about the subplot with Sonny's enormous genitalia, the issues with his wife being able to cope with it, and the woman who he has an affair with who can cope with it due to her own abnormality. There are more details I won't share here that you can go look up, but it definitely isn't something you forget when you're like nine years old.

The book also has some structural differences. We learn about Sonny's murder in retrospect after his corpse is brought to a morgue and then we're then told about how it happened afterward. The film is far more straightforward and for the better I think.

Also as therewillbeblus said above there's a weird subplot about Sonny's junk that really just isn't necessary.

Yeah, my memory of the novel is that about half of it is about Sonny's wife and her gynecological problems.

There is a quick reference to that subplot in the wedding scene.

Yeah, no. It's Lucy, Sonny's mistress, who has the gynecological problems that are given a good deal of attention (it's worth noting that Lucy is also one of the few to get away from the Corleones unscathed -- she gets surgery for her, shall we say, issues, and seems to be settling down with a nice Jewish doctor when her section of the novel ends). There's also a significant amount of attention given to Nino, a friend of Johnny Fontane who manages to drink himself to death, and Johnny Fontane himself gets more pages than you'd think possible given the amount of screen time he gets in the film. Which is another way of saying that Coppola streamlined the story, eliminating some stuff that would only have dragged his film into the three or four hour or more mark.

Listings have appeared for the promised 4K release of The Godfather Collection, so it seems like it’ll be coming in April or May. No info what versions of the third movie or anything else that may be included at this point.

New listing says March now but still no info on whether Part III will appear alongside Coda. The description is a bit worrying for fans of Part III.
For the first time in one collection, this is the essential, definitive saga of the Corleone family, overseen by director Francis Ford Coppola, and based on the bestselling novel by Mario Puzo. A global cultural touchstone captivating fans across generations, the enduring cinematic legacy of THE GODFATHER has immeasurably influenced popular culture, and rightfully earned its legacy as one of the greatest in the history of motion pictures. Remastered and Restored in 4K UHD with HDR-10 and Dolbyvision, this collection includes Academy Award winners for Best Picture THE GODFATHER and THE GODFATHER PART II, alongside the acclaimed conclusion MARIO PUZO’S THE GODFATHER CODA: THE DEATH OF MICHAEL CORLEONE, as well as an extensive array of new and legacy behind-the-scenes special features.
It'd be a shame if Coppola suddenly abandoned the precedent of the Apocalypse Now releases. I'm not a fan of Part III but it should be included as some folks do like that cut, it'd be nice to compare both versions directly and Coppola has thus far been gracious to let all cuts be included. Definitive should mean all cuts.

A shop listing for the German release advises:

4 Ultra HD Blu-rays, 1 Blu-ray Disc
Der Pate 1, 2, 3, Epilog, Bonus-Disc

So that would certainly suggest both cuts of 3 are included, on separate UHDs.

Maybe in some unlikely event they are splitting Godfather 2 across 2 discs though? 202m in 1.85:1 is a lot…

Nah, Paramount didn't bother doing that on Blu-ray, nor did they bother doing it for the even longer Ten Commandments on UHD just recently.

Amazon listing for the 4K Collector's Edition for the trilogy has appeared, though the price is at a whopping $183! There is also a standard edition available as well for $91. The Collector's Edition is going to have a 4K disc for Theatrical and the Director's Cut for 'The Godfather Part 3', alongside a separate disc for 'Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone'. No word as to whether the SE is going to contain all 3 versions of the film.

Standard edition description seems to indicate all three: "alongside the acclaimed conclusion MARIO PUZO’S THE GODFATHER CODA: THE DEATH OF MICHAEL CORLEONE. Bonus discs include both the Theatrical and 1991 Cuts of THE GODFATHER PART III"

I would guess the extra price for the collector's edition is for the book and oversized packaging

You're right as all 3 cuts for Part III will only appear on the 4K sets:

EDIT: HighDefDiscNews posted this on their website:
The standard 4K set will be a 3-disc set of only 4K UHD Blu-ray Discs with the original trilogy (theatrical). The Limited Collector’s Edition will come in a 5-disc set will four 4K discs and one Blu-ray, with two housing “bonus materials” — including the “Director’s Cut” and 1990 Theatrical versions of “The Godfather: Part III” (1990) in 4K. Those two versions are EXCLUSIVE to that Limited Collector’s Edition. You do NOT get those versions with the standard 4K UHD Blu-ray. Sorry for any confusion. Each version will include “The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone” for the third film, the new edit done by Coppola and released in 2020. That limited edition set (pictured below) will also include some physical extras that you’ll see below. Those include:

Part III has always bored me outside of the Vatican and opera scenes (Sofia was not the only problem!) so I'm not spending an extra $90 on having two discs I'm likely never going to watch, plus a book. The standard edition with Parts I, II & Coda will do me just fine, and you can get that for $45-50 in twelve months or for Christmas.

The Digital Bits confirms (normally I'd say grain of salt and all that, but he claims to have spoken to Paramount folks directly about this) that both the SE and LE are 5-disc editions with all the same cuts in both, and the only stuff exclusive to the LE is the book and art prints.
