The Hollywood Reporter is looking like the one that was lukewarm toward it, dropping a "but there's still much to admire". It seems to be doing well on all the polls, the ratings of which derive from its March screening, but, yeah, we'll find out this weekend.

Strong early word for the Loach from The Guardian, Donald Clarke (The Irish Times) and Screen International. IndieWire is positive but less enthusiastic.

I'm sure they're still in the process of weeding it out. The Malick had five tens earlier in this afternoon and no longer. It could be better, but they're working with a lot of movable parts, although I don't know how they still are including that Parasite review. The only competition titles that have screened are Jarmusch, Ly, Diop, Filho, and probably Loach by now. If any other film besides the Almodovar has a review, it's likely bunk.

Oh, Peter Bradshaw loves everything, and all the moreso if he publishes his review first, which he usually does.

That said, Loach has plenty from this festival beyond the Palmes. I keep forgetting to check how many Jury Prizes (which seems regarded as the least of the prizes---the wildcard prize) he has, but surely it's four. Sweet Sixteen won Screenplay, but I don't recall if he had a hand in it.

In case you were holding your breath for the edit: Loach has three Jury Prizes, a record, and did not have a hand in the Sweet Sixteen screenplay. He also appears to be the director with most films in competition ever.

My admittedly cynical first reaction was, of course, the English press always preps up their own filmmakers, but in fairness, Variety's review has also been quite positive. Perhaps, Paul Laverty has written a good screenplay for once (I, Daniel Blake was excruciating in that respect).

There was a German-language only piece by German critic Ruediger Suchsland on the makeup of the Cannes 2019 jury and what it might mean for the films in competition: this jury includes seven directors out of nine jurors. Suechsland went on to say that the awards are usally bad if it's a director heading the jury rather than an actor (though he cites Spielberg awarding Kechiche as the exception). According to an unnamed Spanish colleague of Suechsland, Innaritu has a reputation in Spain for disliking Almodovar and having a thing against gays in general (another reason to dislike this stuck-up git). A comment from the roundtable called Innaritu and Pawlikowski (who apparently also has a reputation for being a self-absorbed alpha male) "two assholes surrounded by intelligent people". Suechsland's roundtable didn't think any of the "Old Guard" will win this year.

The big gap in his filmography from 2004-11 is because he took much of that time off to bring up his kids single-handed after his wife’s unexpected death, which is pretty much the polar opposite of how you’d expect a self-absorbed alpha male to behave.

Just out of curiosity, what does a director do to earn money in such a situation? (Or what specifically did he)

He took a day job teaching at the National Film and Television School, which was within commuting distance of his Oxford home.

Oh my God, that's so awful. I can't imagine what it would be like in that situation. I have one acquaintance who went through something similar - her husband was killed on the way home after dropping off the kids at school - and though I wasn't around at the time, I know it was thoroughly traumatic, almost miraculous she got through it.

There are plenty of boosters of his work here as we've discussed to death, and DarkImbecile was just being ironic. Also, to paraphrase the first 5 minutes of every podcast interview ever: You can say fuck on here.

Overall his films are well-liked by the forum’s membership, defenders (which includes DarkImbecile, if that’s not clear from his facetious last post) just get brow-beaten by the vitriol of those against him (as seen in the pre- and post-edit message upthread). We all have our pet hated directors. But I would 100% be willing to never again utter a word against my own favorite target Michael Mann if the AGI h8rs would just zip it in return

Luckily this isn't a hive mind, so it is most certainly not "happening here" en masse - just because I hate AGI's films and find him to be insufferable doesn't mean another user does, and vice versa, etc etc on and on. You should've been here when Barmy and Nothing posted on the regular, this is incredibly mild stuff.

The only filmmaker this entire forum hates is Thomas Clay.
