I essentially think these awards are a scam. We literally have no idea who these people are, what this organization is, what credibility do they have, what is their procedure for selecting these films, etc.

Media journalists are journalists too right? Don't they typically ask for transparency everywhere? They should boycott these awards in lieu of no transparency.

What sort of transparency are you looking for?

Also, who's being scammed?

How does their best film of the year not make it onto their Top 10 list?

Their Best Film, Documentary, and Foreign Film winners are not included in the Top 10/5 lists

I don't know what it is with this group but their choices always strike me as shallow even when I like the winner, which is saying something for this year considering they previously gave it to Green Book and The Post.

They [NBR] always seem strangely weighted toward the end of the year's releases, as though they only start paying attention in earnest to what their choices are going to be when they've completed their last round of screenings for the year. I am saying this with no intention of actually backing this up with anything but anecdotal evidence based on my memory alone, but this list certainly backs that up.

There's always a war in my mind on whether festival movie bias or December movie obsession is a bigger problem in Oscars punditry.

Then I remember last year when we had to deal with Mary Poppins Returns as a major contender for about a month and that answers that question.

Iirc, and I may be misremembering, the NBR originally began as a response to state censorship boards, and grew from there before being made outdated by various other organizations and the MPAA ratings system. I think they used to run a periodical for then cineastes called Films in Review that was very good, and the awards probably grew out of both the censorship and critical components of their origins.

I wouldn’t be surprised if these days the NBR is a whole lot nepotistic and vanity project for millionaire retirees that love movies (and their friends), functioning more as a country club than anything else.

Thanks for the context. I would say it doesn't matter what it was. What matters is whis is it today. Who are the members? Who gets membership? How do they get access to movies? What is their voting procedure like? When do they meet to decide these awards? etc.

It seems so opaque. We have a name. And boom at the end of the year a list of films they liked with no context about anything else. Seems shoddy if not sinister.

The NBR may or may not be nebulous/a poor representative of critical opinion, but there is no way they can be worse than the Golden Globes (an institution which genuinely deserves aspersions like the above cast in its direction). Complaining about the sinister character of the NBR when the Globes exist and attract large amounts of press coverage strikes me as a little odd.
