Region encoding is fine, but forced subs??!
Tutut wrote:JMO : Les sous-titres seront-ils imposés ?
C’est aussi une clause contractuelle, ça se fera au cas par cas.
Does this mean Double Indemnity will have unremovable French subtitles?

No, it means that they'll look at it on a case by case (or "cas par cas") basis, but their hands might be tied.

Updates on page 1.
added:
French Connection (UK and France);
Entre les murs,
Scoop,
Tin Drum, Desplechin's incredible
Christmas Tale, and
The Man Who Wasn't There (all France)
other clean-up includes two warnings:
This Is England (UK) and
Paris (France) are apparently region locked.

I can't find a Norwegian e-tailer, but the Swedish release of
Fanny and Alexander is due December 3rd. One shop (
http://cdon.se/film/fanny_och_alexander ... y)-4044278 -- no hotlink because I guess the parentheses confuse phpBB) has back cover art, which is pretty low-res but seems to show a Region B icon. This isn't confirmation in and of itself, of course.

Because of the interview I was talking about on my post above.
JMO : Vos Blu-ray seront-ils zonés ?
Will your BR discs be region locked ?
Oui. C’est contractuel.
Yes. It's contractual.

Does anyone know if the Un Conte de Noel Blu-Ray from BAC will have English subtitles?
I wish French DVDs were more English friendly, not that they have any reason to be.

Would love some help. If anyone knows [from personal experience or a reputable review] the region-coding and sub situation of the following releases please report. Thanks.

No, I don't own it but it seems the PQ is not great according to the screenshots from someone who's posting also here on the Criterion forum (petoluk).
From AVS Forum, see the post #75
The french
House of Flying Daggers is uncut with english subs, but Region B.
I know someone had a trick to watch it on a region A Panasonic BD30 player, but I couldn't find the thread on the Highdefdigest forum.

Yep, the PQ is really atrocious - looks like
the horrid German HD DVD with an extra sprinkle of DVNR...
Well, if I'm not mistaken, this BR is just a port of the aforementioned HD DVD release. A quote from that Amazon link:
Nein, Ihr Gerät ist nicht defekt........
Die Bildqualität ist wirklich grausam und eine Negativreklame für High Definition.
(No, your equipment is not broken...
The PQ is really that awful, and is a negative advertisement for HD.)
And I don't think there are English subs on the disc either...
Cheers!

Sadly, this has no subtitles at all - not even French, which is idiotic in this day and age.

You 'think' there are none. But I 'know!' they are present.

And how's the PQ? Does it look the same as the HD DVD?

The region coding site linked on page one of this thread notes that the German Hero release is an "ABC" one. But it also says "only German subtitles". Maybe SalParadise could email him the correction.
I'd be curious to learn about the picture quality too, btw.
In other news, the French Wild at Heart (Sailor and Lula) is apparently region free.

Well, based on the comments @ Amazon.de, I'd say it's really just a port of the older HD DVD release = the PQ is crap!
Cheers!

EDIT: Googled a bit, and found
this post by TLEFilms'
Torsten Kaiser saying:
To cut it short: better than DVD: YES - however, a really good High Definition Master looks different (mainly due to the film print [used] & transfer)...

Artificial Eye's Zatoichi on Blu-ray may say region ABC on the back of the box, but my North American PS3 can't handle the menus and can't access the feature film. Unless there is some irony about a black screen and a blind protagonist?
