I think I had a stroke whilst watching that. I'm not sure, though.

I'm sure Adult Swim is fighting for the rights to the film

It would certainly lead to some interesting debate in the forum.

If you watch any of the other parts of the film (Hausu) it is quite strange how contemporary it looks and feels. Those weird freakouts happen only rarely... the rest of the movie looks like a modern creepy J-horror film (maybe a little brighter and a lot 'dumber').

Someone posted that Nights of Cabiria has gone OOP since the website changed. Has anything else gone out of print since yesterday?

Possibly Indiscretion of an American Wife. It is listed as out of stock with a link to contact the order desk. (Possibly to refund outstanding orders?) Is this studio Canal problems again? I was hoping Criterion would have worked something out with Lionsgate.

That's the UK Black Narcissus. Looks like Amazon is just offering it up as an import. I assume the same for La Haine.

Gotta be careful with these "101 Distribution" imports and do your compatibility research. They listed the
Red Desert Blu-Ray on Amazon as region free when it is actually region B.

Actually, maybe the opposite:
Quai des Orfèvres is available again...strange.

I have the [ITV] Black Narcissus, and it is definitely region-free. I bought mine directly from the UK, and not from "101 Distribution" via Amazon, but it appears to be the same disc.

Donald Sosin posted this over at Nitrateville:
I am scoring JAPANESE GIRLS AT THE HARBOR (Shimizu) for Criterion. It will be released along with 3 of his sound films.

There was a retrospective of his films a while back
here. Looks like a Eclipse set.

A Shimizu box in 09 would totally make up for the lack of Naruse.

It's good that they will focus on other early Japanese masters too. I'm still waiting for Yamanaka, Shimazu and ofcourse, more Naruse.
What will the set be?
Japanese Girls at the Harbor
Mr. Thank You
Children in the Wind

I´m listening to Music by Ry Cooder right now, and his theme from Alamo Bay is gorgeous and makes me curious about the movie. Given Criterions love for Louis Malle, any chance they might release this? The film is rarely talked about(is it even mentioned on this forum?). Is this considered one of his lesser films(is that an understatement)? I´m no authority on Louis Malle...

Well, if I don't have to plunk down $110 for one (!) of the Japanese Shimizu sets, I'm not going to complain. But I can't say that I'm totally happy about seeing Shimizu prioritized over Naruse, Oshima, or even the Japanese horror or yakuza Eclipse sets, if in fact that's how it shakes out.
I'm glad Grady Hendrix bitch-slapped them over Hausu.

Almost without doubt a port of that 4 film set for Eclipse, with upgraded subs (I've seen Ornamental Hairpin and have no doubt that better subbing will reveal layers of subtext missing from the Shochiku box.
No way are they running all new transfers for Shimizu, though I'd love to be surprised.
It's a shame it'll be Eclipse, because context would be appreciated on this material.
Donald Sosin yet again. Why this guy gets so much of this work, I'll never understand.

It's that two-fer discount thing I guess. Doesn't his wife do those "vocalizations" in his scores? Or am I thinking of someone else from the Kino Kit Kat Klub?

I am delighted that Eclipse is making some Shimizu available in North America. Is this a replacement for more Naruse? Of course not. But the best of Shimizu's work is equal to the best of any other Japanese classic master. I would categorize his best films as indispensable.
If only someone, somewhere would tackle Seven Seas, Eclipse, Memoirs of a Song Girl and Forget Love For Now (among others).

I´ve been on a Woody Allen kick lately, and I´ve noticed that Play It Again, Sam is OOP. Does this mean an SE is coming from Paramount, or could this be one of the titles in the Paramount/Criterion deal? Imagine Woody Allen in the collection. [-o<
